Embracing Tradition: A Traditional Christmas in Ireland

This time That's Christmas takes a look at a traditional Christmas in Ireland.

As we near the festive season, many countries around the world prepare to celebrate Christmas in their unique ways. Ireland, a country renowned for its rich cultural heritage, has its own special way of embracing the Christmas spirit.

Christmas in Ireland is not just a day but a season filled with ancient traditions, heart-warming rituals, and a sense of community that genuinely captures the essence of the Christmas season. In this blog post, we will take a journey into the heart of a traditional Irish Christmas.

Decorating the Home

In Ireland, the Christmas season kicks off in early December with the lighting of the first candle in the Advent wreath. Many Irish families also put up their Christmas trees and decorate their homes with festive ornaments and twinkling lights. However, traditional Irish decorations often include sprigs of holly and ivy, which symbolise protection and good luck. Mistletoe is hung above doorways, where a kiss is exchanged beneath it, a custom that dates back to ancient Celtic traditions.

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is an important time for Irish families. Many attend a midnight Mass, which is a solemn and spiritual occasion. After Mass, it's customary to return home and enjoy a warm, hearty bowl of soup before heading to bed.

A Visit from Santa

In Ireland, Santa Claus is known as "Daidí na Nollag" or "Father Christmas." Children leave out a glass of milk and some mince pies for Santa, along with a carrot for his reindeer. This gesture is a sign of the warmth and hospitality that characterises Irish culture.

Traditional Christmas Dinner

On Christmas Day, a grand feast is prepared and shared among family and friends. The centrepiece of the meal is typically a roast turkey, ham, or goose. Traditional side dishes include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and a wide array of vegetables. Christmas pudding, a rich fruitcake, is a must-have dessert. It's often doused in brandy and set ablaze before being served with a dollop of custard or cream.

St. Stephen's Day (Boxing Day)

The day after Christmas, known as St. Stephen's Day or Boxing Day, is marked by a variety of traditions. In rural areas, "Hunting the Wren" is a popular custom, where groups of young people dress up in straw costumes and parade through the streets, singing songs and collecting donations for charity.

Candlelit Windows

A beautiful Irish tradition is the lighting of a single candle in the window on Christmas Eve. This candle is a symbol of welcome and is meant to guide Mary and Joseph on their way to find shelter, a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas Carols and Music

Music is a fundamental part of an Irish Christmas. Local choirs and carol singers often visit homes, hospitals, and care facilities to share the joy of the season through songs and music. Traditional Irish instruments, like the tin whistle and bodhrán, add a unique and lively touch to the festivities.

Wren Boys

The Wren Boys tradition involves groups of young people, known as "Wren Boys," dressing in straw costumes and masks, parading through towns and villages, and collecting money for charity. This custom has roots in an old Irish legend and is a lively and colourful part of the Christmas season.

A traditional Christmas in Ireland is a heart-warming and authentic celebration of the holiday season. It's a time when family and community take centre stage, and age-old customs and rituals bring people together in a spirit of warmth and generosity. While modern influences have shaped some aspects of the holiday, the essence of a traditional Irish Christmas endures, reminding us of the importance of cherishing our heritage and the joy of the season.

Celebrating Christmas in the Rainbow Nation: A South African Festive Experience

When you think of Christmas, images of snow-covered landscapes, twinkling lights, and warm fires might come to mind. However, Christmas in South Africa offers a unique and vibrant celebration that's quite different from the traditional Western Christmas season. In the Rainbow Nation, Christmas is a time of festive traditions, warm weather, and a rich blend of cultures. Let's take a journey to explore how South Africans celebrate this special time of year.

The Weather

One of the most distinctive features of Christmas in South Africa is the weather. Unlike the wintery Christmas celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere, December in South Africa marks the beginning of summer. The sun shines brightly, and temperatures soar, making it the perfect time for outdoor celebrations. It's not unusual for South Africans to celebrate Christmas with a beach outing or a picnic under the warm, golden sun.

Braai Time

A "braai" is South Africa's version of a barbecue, and it plays a significant role in the country's Christmas celebrations. Families and friends gather around the grill to cook up a feast of meats, sausages, and more. Traditional South African foods like boerewors (a coiled sausage) and sosaties (marinated skewers) are often grilled to perfection. These delicious dishes, along with salads, roasted vegetables, and "pap" (a maize porridge), make for a mouth-watering Christmas feast.

Local Delicacies

In addition to the braai, South Africans have a few unique Christmas delicacies that add a special touch to their celebrations. "Bobotie," a spiced, baked minced meat dish topped with an egg-based mixture, is a must on many Christmas tables. Desserts like "malva pudding," a sweet, sticky cake served with a warm custard, and "koeksisters," twisted and deep-fried dough soaked in syrup, are also holiday favourites.

Carols and Church Services

South Africa is a culturally diverse nation, and Christmas celebrations reflect this diversity. Carols are sung in many of the country's 11 official languages. Zulu, Afrikaans, and English carols are popular choices, creating a rich tapestry of sounds that resonate throughout communities. Many South Africans attend Christmas Eve church services to mark the birth of Christ, with midnight masses being a common tradition.

Decorations

While you won't see snow-covered landscapes, South Africans still go all out when it comes to decorating their homes for Christmas. You'll find Christmas trees adorned with colourful ornaments, tinsel, and lights, as well as wreaths on doors and twinkling fairy lights in windows. Some decorations even incorporate African elements, such as traditional beadwork and fabrics, adding a unique local flair.

Santa Claus and "Sinterklaas"

Santa Claus, or "Father Christmas" as he's known in South Africa, plays a central role in Christmas celebrations. He brings gifts to children, and like in many countries, the excitement of Santa's visit is a highlight for the little ones.

Additionally, the Dutch tradition of "Sinterklaas" is still observed in some South African communities, especially among the Afrikaans-speaking population. Sinterklaas, a legendary figure similar to Santa Claus, arrives in early December with his assistant "Zwarte Piet" to distribute sweets and presents to children.

Conclusion

Christmas in South Africa is a unique and joyful experience. From the warm, sunny weather to the diverse cultural celebrations and delicious cuisine, this holiday season is a vibrant and memorable time in the Rainbow Nation. Whether you're soaking up the sun at the beach, enjoying a braai with friends and family, or attending a multilingual carol service, Christmas in South Africa is a celebration of unity and traditions, all against the backdrop of a stunning summer landscape.

Leading Artisan Ham Company Ramps Up Production Ahead of Christmas

Royal Warrant holding artisanal ham producer, DukesHill is working around the clock to meet the high demand for their gammon, ham and sweet treats like mince pies and handmade Christmas cakes ahead of the festive period.

The Shropshire-based business is known for its dedication to providing the finest traditionally cured hams, free-range bronze turkeys, and artisanal fine foods. To cope with demand, DukesHill will increase its workforce by 200% over the coming months.

During the peak Christmas period between October and December, DukesHill plans to cure over 15,000 outdoor bred pork legs across a variety of products, including traditionally cured cooked and uncooked hams, bacon, slices of porchetta, ham hock and pork products.

Over forty thousand hams were sold during the festive season last year, 2022, a number the luxury food producer is hoping to exceed for Christmas 2023.

They also expect to distribute two thousand of their specially reared turkeys, tens of thousands of handmade mince pies and over seven thousand of DukesHill’s very own handmade Christmas puddings, as people stock up for the big day.

Last year’s statistics show the nation is opting for more gammon around Christmas time than ever before. Data collected by Kantar shows retailers experienced a 23.6% increase in value of gammon sales and 5.1% uplift by volume year-on-year, of gammon products in the four weeks to Christmas Day 2022.

Mark Gallagher, CEO of DukesHill says, “The months running up to Christmas is the busiest time fir us at DukesHill and right now our dedicated team is working hard to ensure there’s plenty of perfectly cured ham and sweet treats for our customers to have a memorable and most delicious Christmas.

"Ham is one of the nation’s favourite centrepieces over Christmas and it’s no wonder, it’s an incredibly versatile crowd-pleaser that's easy to prepare and absolutely delicious, too. Not to mention the lure of Boxing Day ham, egg and chips! Our Christmas brochures have landed, and we’ve already seen a 35% increase in customers placing their Christmas orders earlier this year.”

Launching this Christmas, DukesHill forecast the star product to be their new Cranberry Glazed Ham with Pork & Cranberry Stuffing - Half ham, RRP £80 (min 2kg), Whole ham, RRP £125. This special edition Christmas ham is generously stuffed with their very own Pork and Cranberry Stuffing.

A DukesHill ham or turkey is a celebration of good farming techniques, which is good news for British farming and industry, as they use only the finest quality outdoor-bred British pork and the most traditional curing methods which can take up to six months to produce.

One of DukesHill’s farmers, Andrew Tomson from Peddars Pigs Ltd, plays a crucial role in helping meet the demand. He said: “As a pig farmer of 45 years, our commitment is to ensure the wellbeing of every pig under our care. I really, firmly believe raising healthy pigs on straw is about providing them with a life of comfort and respect in an environment where they thrive. This produces the best quality pork and we know these animals have lived the best life possible.”

As for the traditional choice of turkey for a Christmas Day feast, DukesHill’s free range bronze turkeys are reared especially for DukesHill in Kent by a highly experienced third-generation turkey-farming family who have been rearing turkeys for forty years. Their turkeys roam freely in grassy paddocks and meadows and are fed a natural cereal-based diet.

Customers can book their deliveries to fill the larder for the festive period or order hampers for loved ones on the website www.dukeshill.co.uk. Early orders are encouraged to guarantee timely delivery and to ensure everyone can savour a delicious Christmas with DukesHill.

A Kiwi Christmas: Tradition, Sunshine, and Surprises

As part of a series, That's Christmas is looking at how Christmas is celebrated in different part of the world. Today we are looking at Christmas in New Zealand.

Christmas is a time for joy, celebration, and togetherness, and it's celebrated in diverse ways all around the world. In the land down under, New Zealand, Christmas is a unique and delightful affair that combines traditional elements with the beauty of a Southern Hemisphere summer.

Let's dive into the fascinating world of a Kiwi Christmas and explore the customs and traditions that make it so special.

Summer Down Under

One of the most striking differences between Christmas in New Zealand and many other parts of the world is the season. Christmas in New Zealand falls during the Southern Hemisphere summer, meaning December 25th is a day of sunshine and warmth. While the Northern Hemisphere often experiences a white Christmas, Kiwis enjoy long, sunny days, and average temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F). This allows for unique Christmas traditions that revolve around outdoor activities, barbecues, and trips to the beach.

The Pohutukawa Tree

While Christmas trees are common worldwide, New Zealand has its own special version - the Pohutukawa tree. Often referred to as the New Zealand Christmas tree, it's known for its brilliant crimson flowers that bloom in December. These vibrant blooms are a vivid symbol of the festive season in the country, and you'll find them decorating homes and streets.

Outdoor Celebrations

Given the beautiful summer weather, it's no surprise that Kiwis love to celebrate Christmas outdoors. Picnics, barbecues, and gatherings at the beach or in local parks are common. Families and friends often come together for a relaxed and sun-soaked feast, complete with New Zealand's famous barbecue specialties like lamb, seafood, and sausages. Pohutukawa blossoms and native ferns are used for decoration, enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings.

A Christmas Dip

Christmas Day is often accompanied by a refreshing swim. Many New Zealanders take the opportunity to visit the beach or local swimming spots to cool off. It's a tradition that celebrates the spirit of summer and the joy of the ocean. Children build sandcastles and play in the waves, and families relax on the sandy shores, making cherished memories together.

Santa's Mode of Transport

In New Zealand, Santa's traditional sleigh and reindeer take on a unique twist. To accommodate the warmer weather and lack of snow, Santa is often depicted arriving on the shores in a surfboard or a waka (a traditional Māori canoe). This charming Kiwi adaptation adds a touch of humour and showcases the Kiwi spirit of innovation.

Māori and Pacific Influences

New Zealand's cultural diversity is reflected in its Christmas celebrations. Māori and Pacific Island communities have their own unique customs and add their rich traditions to the festive season. Māori waiata (songs) and Pacific Island dances often make appearances at Christmas events, providing a multicultural blend that truly defines the Kiwi way of life.

Gift-Giving and Family Time

Like in many parts of the world, gift-giving is a cherished tradition in New Zealand. Families come together to exchange presents and celebrate the joy of giving. While traditional Christmas dinners are common, a laid-back approach to the day prevails, with the emphasis being on spending time with loved ones and enjoying the outdoors.

New Zealand's Christmas celebrations are a harmonious blend of tradition, natural beauty, and a unique Southern Hemisphere twist. Whether you're picnicking on the beach, decorating a Pohutukawa tree, or enjoying a barbecue, a Kiwi Christmas is a memorable experience. It's a time to embrace the spirit of the season while appreciating the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture that make New Zealand's Christmas truly one of a kind.

Unwrap the Magic of Winter at Butser's Alternative Christmas Event: ‘Midwinter's Magical Quest’

We at That's Christmas were wondering what the Butser Ancient Farm were doing for the Christmas period... and now we know!

Families can join them for under £35 and leave with a deeper understanding of Winter folklore, delightful crafts, and magical memories.

Butser Ancient Farm in the South Downs is opening to the public this Winter and inviting families to embark on an enchanting festive adventure to escape commercial Christmas, honour nature and bring ancient traditions to life in a very special way.

As an alternative to the Father Christmas experience, Midwinter’s Magical Quest honours the balance of the feminine and masculine energies as the season turns. The majestic Deer Queen and jolly Holly King are back in Butser’s ancient dwellings and need your help to complete their quest and help celebrate the turning of the year.

The Holly King will greet all questers in their Saxon House, which is beautifully recreated from foundations excavated close to the neighbouring village of Chalton. This Winter it will be transformed into the Holly King’s Evergreen Hall, where visitors can make evergreen crowns and decorations to put a Spring in their step ready for the adventure.

The Holly King is the personification of Winter in folklore and his power peaks in Midwinter before he hands the crown over to his brother The Oak King of Summer. The everlasting cycle of the Oak and Holly brothers reflects the seasonal cycles of solar light and dark, renewal and growth.

As you follow the trail of folklore and lost traditions, you’ll come to Little Woodbury, their great Iron Age roundhouse.

The roundhouse will become the Realm of Winter Wishes where families who are visiting can cast their hopes and dreams into the wishing tree and learn the ancient craft of corn dolly making to find a hidden message for the Deer Queen.

Once questers have pieced together the magic throughout the trail, they will find the Deer Queen’s Grotto in Butser’s reconstructed Neolithic Horton House, which originally stood around 3800-3600 BC. Visitors will be able to share the knowledge they have collected to give Mother Deer what she needs to make the journey to return the Sun to the land safely on the Winter Solstice.

The Deer Queen is an important part of Butser’s event, bringing a female presence to this Wintery time of year. The character has been inspired by an ancient folktale from Northern Europe that tells of the brave Mother Deer who must journey South to bring the sun goddess back to warm the lands again. It has been said that this ancient story is the origin of Rudolph. Unlike other deer, both female and male reindeers have antlers.

The difference is, after the Autumn rutting season the males lose their antlers while the females keep theirs to protect their precious growing fawns. Throughout the years and even today the deer and her antlers are drawn as the tree of life, carrying everything from small animals to celestial bodies within them. So, when you see antlered reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh in Midwinter you can be sure that Rudolph and her gang are unmistakably girls!

They are aware that ancient sites in Britain have clear evidence of celebration at this time of year, with sites like Newgrange in Ireland and Stonehenge aligned with Winter sun. They also have evidence that ever since the Stone Age people around the world have revered the deer, with her image painted on cave walls, etched in stone and tattooed on skin.

Kristin Devey, Events Coordinator at Butser Ancient Farm, shared her excitement about the upcoming event: “We are really thrilled to open the farm to the public once again this winter, offering a chance for more people to experience the wonder of Butser during this special time of year.

Families can join us for under £35 and leave with a deeper understanding of Winter folklore, delightful crafts, and magical memories. Whether you're celebrating Solstice, Yule, or simply seeking a unique family Christmas day out, 'Midwinter's Magical Quest' offers an inclusive and non-denominational celebration that appeals to all. We invite local families to join us for a memorable and magical experience that honours the wonders of the season and its ancient traditions.”

Event Details and Ticket Information

The Midwinter's Magical Quest trail runs from 10am to 3:30pm on Saturday December 2nd, Sunday December 3rd, Saturday December 9th, and Sunday December 10th, 2023. Butser Ancient Farm also features a full schedule of festive events, including Tales of Winter Magic, Festive Fireside Storytelling, and a Winter Solstice Celtic Celebration complete with drumming, poetry, and prose.

Tickets for Midwinter's Magical Quest are available on the Butser Ancient Farm website at https://www.butserancientfarm.co.uk/christmas-yule-winter-events.

Butser Ancient Farm is a living history museum nestled in the picturesque Hampshire countryside. The farm offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the lives of our ancient ancestors through reconstructed buildings, authentic crafts, and immersive events.

Despite its humble beginnings as a research site 50 years ago, Butser Ancient Farm has become one of the South East’s top visitor attractions welcoming visitors throughout the year including some 35,000 schoolchildren who learn about the lives of our ancient ancestors from the Stone Age through to the Anglo-Saxon periods. As a not-for-profit, independently run community interest company (CIC) they rely on the support of many organisations and individuals, as well as their own fundraising events, to make their research and education work possible. More about the farm can be found at www.butserancientfarm.co.uk

Huge festive recruitment drive launched by Tesco as it looks to fill 30,000 jobs

Even more opportunities for employment over the Christmas season as a huge festive recruitment drive has been launched by Tesco ahead of the busy holiday period this year.

And that should be good news for job-hunting students and families looking to offset increasing bills or anyone wanting to return to the workforce.

This year Tesco is recruiting 30,000 temporary Colleagues across the UK to help customers during the busy Christmas period.

The jobs will mainly involve working in Tesco’s Superstores and Extra stores for either early morning, day or evening shifts, so that prospective applicants can find an opportunity that fits around them.

James Goodman, Tesco People Director said: “This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to boost their earnings over the festive period or who needs to find a route back into the workplace.

“We’re looking for people who enjoy working as part of a team and are prepared to go that extra mile in order to help our customers.

“Our festive roles are a fantastic way to become part of the Tesco team, with roles working on checkouts to picking orders for home delivery or replenishing the store. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to meet great people, learn new skills and be part of a diverse team where everyone is welcome.

“We had a great response for festive roles last year and we would love to hear from anyone who worked with us then.

“With part-time, temporary roles available across the UK, there are a variety of different shift patterns on offer, making sure these roles fit around different individual needs and lifestyles.”

The new colleagues will help the supermarket meet high demand as customers look to make Christmas savings – especially as Tesco has just locked low prices on more than 1000 products until 2024 – as well as helping shoppers get exclusive deals on Clubcard Prices at the checkout.

Once the seasonal period comes to an end, there may be opportunities for Christmas colleagues to apply for any permanent roles available in Tesco stores.

One person who did that last year is Kenzy Talbot, 28, who joined Tesco last November as a festive colleague and worked in the fresh food sales area.

Kenzy said: “I'm a working mum with a young child, as you can imagine trying to fit work around school times in the past was very difficult.

“Tesco has been amazing and with their flexibility this has meant that I have been able to fit my working hours around my family commitments.

“I was delighted to become a permanent member of the team in January 2023. I have progressed and learnt other areas of the store, currently working most of my hours on groceries along with picking up extra shifts on other areas such as checkouts and fresh areas.”

Anyone interested in a festive job at Tesco should apply to: www.tesco-careers.com/festive

This will ensure there are plenty of colleagues ready to help and serve customers, whether they like to plan ahead or leave their Christmas shopping to the very last minute. (My wife likes to do that!)

New colleagues will support Sainsbury’s and Argos in serving customers, restocking shelves and fulfilling online orders by picking, packing and delivering. In their depots and fulfilment centres, colleagues will work in warehouses, ensuring products reach homes and stores nationally and are ready for customers to enjoy.

Elevating an affordable night in with a luxury offering and taking snacking to a new level, Asda has put together the ultimate crisp and wine pairing guide - from Pigs in Blankets and Pinot to Salt & Vinegar Sticks and Vouvray Chenin Blanc.

Hand cooked for the perfect crunch; the Extra Special Sea Salt & Black Pepper Hand Cooked Crisps (£1.35) should be paired with Asda’s Extra Special Dao (£7.50). The earthy, pepper flavours in the crisps match well with the herbal and black fruit notes of the wine.

Onion Rings (£1) but not as you may know them, these crisps are best paired with Asda’s Extra Special Malbec (£7.75); its strawberry and black cherry flavours are elevated by the pickled tang of the crisps.

Salt & Vinegar Sticks (£1) are a classic, and the slight sweetness Extra Special Vouvray Chenin Blanc (£8.00) balances the salty and tangy flavours.

Like a bit of spice? The fizz and freshness of the Extra Special Prosecco Brut (£8.00) cuts through the sweet, spicy and salty flavours of the Extra Special Korean Gochujang Hand Cooked Crisps (£1.35), creating a taste sensation.

As it gets closer to Christmas, Asda’s limited edition seasonal crisps are the perfect snack to enjoy alongside a winter tipple.

Hand cooked and seasoned with a rich and smoky flavour, the Extra Special Pigs in Blankets Hand Cooked Crisps (£1.35) should be paired with Asda’s Extra Special Pinot Noir (£8.00), as the delicate plum notes of the wine balance out the pork flavour.

The zesty acidity and minerality of the Extra Special Rueda (£6.00) compliments beautifully the stuffing flavour in the Extra Special Turkey & Stuffing Hand Cooked Crisps (£1.35), which are seasoned to give a hearty and herby flavour.

With smoky cherry fruits and a hint of cedar, Asda’s Extra Special Plan De Dieu Côtes Du Rhône Villages (£.8.75) is perfect with meatiness of the Extra Special Beef in Red Wine Gravy Hand Cooked Crisps (£1.35).

Ideal for the Christmas party table, the Asda Turkey Curry Crisps (£1.10) are a mix of snack shapes and seasoned with a mild turkey curry flavour. The Extra Special South African Chardonnay (£7.25) is the one to enjoy these with, with the creamy mild spices of the curry flavours balancing out the pairing.

A Delicious Twist: Vegan Alternatives to the Traditional Christmas Dinner

Christmas is a time of joy, love, and feasting with our loved ones. For many, this often includes a traditional Christmas dinner, complete with succulent roast meats and rich, creamy sides. But what if you or your guests follow a vegan lifestyle, or you simply want to try something new this Christmas season?

Fear not! There's a world of scrumptious vegan alternatives waiting to delight your taste buds. In this blog post, we'll explore some delectable options for a plant-based Christmas feast that can easily rival, if not surpass, the traditional spread.

Roasted Stuffed Butternut Squash

Butternut squash is the perfect candidate for a vegan main course. Roast it to perfection, then fill it with a flavourful stuffing made from quinoa, nuts, cranberries, and herbs. Drizzle with a balsamic glaze and watch your guests' eyes light up at this hearty, visually stunning dish.

Portobello Mushroom Wellington

Mushrooms are a vegan's best friend when it comes to crafting a rich, meaty flavour. Try a Portobello mushroom Wellington as the centrepiece of your holiday meal. Wrap the savoury mushrooms in puff pastry, along with spinach, caramelized onions, and a touch of garlic. Bake until golden brown, and voila – you have an impressive, satisfying entrée.

Lentil and Nut Roast

A lentil and nut roast is a classic vegan choice for Christmas dinner. Packed with protein, this dish combines lentils, nuts, breadcrumbs, and an array of seasonings. The result is a mouth-watering roast that can easily replace meat. Serve it with a generous helping of vegan gravy and all the traditional trimmings.

Vegan Nut Roast

Alternatively, consider a vegan nut roast. This delightful dish features a mixture of chopped nuts, seeds, and vegetables, held together with flax or chia seeds. The nut roast can be personalised with various herbs and spices, creating a festive, flavourful centrepiece for your Christmas dinner table.

Stuffed Peppers

For a light yet satisfying main course, stuffed peppers are an excellent option. Fill colourful bell peppers with a mixture of quinoa, black beans, corn, and a blend of spices. Roast until tender, and serve with a zesty tomato sauce. The vibrant presentation adds a splash of Christmas cheer to your meal.

Vegan Gravy

No Christmas dinner is complete without a tasty and hearty gravy. Swap the traditional meat-based gravy for a rich, flavoursome vegan version. You can make a delicious gravy using ingredients like vegetable broth, nutritional yeast, mushrooms, and various seasonings. Pour it generously over your vegan roast for a burst of flavour.

Creamy Vegan Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are a Christmas dinner essential. To create a vegan-friendly version, simply replace butter and cream with plant-based alternatives like vegan butter and almond or soy milk. Add roasted garlic for a flavourful twist, and you'll have creamy, dreamy mashed potatoes that will please everyone at the table.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Roasted Brussels sprouts are a perfect side dish for any holiday meal. Toss them with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and a touch of maple syrup, then roast until crispy and caramelised. Their unique, robust flavour is a delightful addition to your vegan Christmas feast. (As a fan of Brussel sprouts, I approve of this idea!)

Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is a Christmas dinner classic that's already vegan! Homemade cranberry sauce, sweetened with sugar or maple syrup, is a vibrant, tangy condiment that pairs wonderfully with your main dishes.

Vegan Desserts

For a sweet ending to your vegan Christmas dinner, indulge in vegan desserts like pumpkin pie with coconut whipped cream, vegan chocolate yule log, or gingerbread cookies. These treats are just as decadent and delicious as their non-vegan counterparts.

This Christmas, embrace the spirit of inclusivity and try something new by exploring these delectable vegan alternatives to the traditional Christmas dinner. From savoury main courses to mouth-watering sides and scrumptious desserts, there are plenty of options to satisfy the palate and share a compassionate, eco-friendly meal with your loved ones. Make this Christmas season one to remember with a vegan feast that celebrates delicious food and the spirit of togetherness.

Supermarkets such as Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, the Co-Op, etc are offering an increasing range of vegetarian and vegan food so are well worth checking out.

A Taste of Down Under: Exploring the Typical Australian Christmas Meal

When you think of Christmas, you'll probably envision snow, warm, cosy open fires, and hot mulled wine.

But in the Land Down Under in Australia, where December is the peak of their summer, the Christmas season unfolds quite differently. Australians have adapted their Christmas traditions to the scorching sun and clear blue skies, including their Christmas meals. In this blog post, we'll explore the typical Australian Christmas meal and the unique culinary traditions that make it a memorable and mouth-watering experience.

Fresh Seafood

Christmas in Australia often begins with some fresh seafood. With the country's vast coastline and abundant marine life, it's no wonder prawns, oysters, and crayfish make their way onto the holiday table. Prawns, especially, are an iconic Christmas dish, often served cold with cocktail sauce or simply grilled with a touch of lemon. These delicious crustaceans symbolise the Australian love for outdoor barbecues and beachside gatherings during the festive season.

Roast Meats

While roast turkey or ham is a traditional Christmas centrepiece in many countries, Australians often opt for roast meats that are more suited to their warmer climate. Lamb, beef, or pork roasts are popular choices, often cooked on the barbecue to keep the heat out of the kitchen. These succulent roasts are typically seasoned with garlic, rosemary, and native herbs, giving them a distinctive Australian flavour.

Barbecue Bonanza

Australians are known for their love of barbecues, and Christmas Day is no exception to this rule. Barbecues are often fired up to grill various meats, sausages, and even seafoods. Also in addition to the roast meats, you might find kangaroo steaks or emu sausages, which add a unique and exotic twist to the festive feasting.

Salads and Sides

Given the heat, a variety of salads and refreshing side dishes really are a must on the Australian Christmas table. Classic salads such as potato salad, coleslaw, and Greek salad are often featured alongside more innovative options such as mango and avocado salads, all designed to cool the palate and complement the grilled and roasted main dishes.

Australia also produces a range of interesting and tasty cheeses which find their way onto Australian Christmas cheeseboards.

Christmas Pudding and Pavlova

Despite the heat, some Australian Christmas traditions align with those of the Northern Hemisphere. Christmas pudding, a rich, fruity, and spiced dessert, is still very much enjoyed, although it may be served with a dollop of ice cream to combat the warmth. But the true star of the Australian Christmas dessert table is the pavlova. This meringue-based dessert is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and traditionally topped with fresh fruits like passionfruit, kiwi, and strawberries.

Tropical Fruits

Australians take full advantage of the seasonal fruits that thrive in their warmer climate. Mangoes, cherries, watermelons, and lychees are commonly served during Christmastime, either as a refreshing snack or incorporated into desserts and fruit salads. These juicy, tropical fruits add a burst of colour and flavour to the festive feasting.

Drinks

To beat the summer heat, Australians enjoy a variety of beverages during their Christmas celebrations. Iced tea, lemonade, and sparkling wines are some popular choices. Some may even indulge in a classic Aussie beer or a glass of chilled rosé. A non-alcoholic favourite is the "Aussie Punch," which is a fruity concoction made with fruit juices, soda, and a hint of mint.

The typical Australian Christmas meal is a reflection of the country's unique climate, culture, and culinary traditions. From fresh seafood and barbecued meats to tropical fruits and pavlova, the Australian Christmas feast is a true celebration of the nation's diversity and love for the outdoors. So, if you ever find yourself celebrating Christmas Down Under, be prepared for a mouth-watering and memorable culinary adventure that is sure to leave you feeling full and festive.

Sharpham Dairy's Christmas Cheeseboards will delight your Christmas guests

Sharpham Dairy has got the makings of the perfect Christmas cheeseboards for you!

The oozy crowd-pleaser - Sharpham Camembert - £6.50 / 280g

It's a moist, soft, creamy, surface-ripened cows' milk cheese, Camembert is made in individual rounds which makes it perfect for baking. When heated, Sharpham Camembert becomes yielding, oozing and is perfect for dipping.

Sharpham Camembert is a unique combination of traditional Normandy methods and singular South Devon terroir. It's inspired by the much-loved French classic, but it is very much its own cheese.

The talking point cheese - Sharpham Rushmore £5.50 / 230g

Known as 'the mistake cheese', Sharpham Rushmore was serendipitously created when their farmer accidentally poured goat's milk into the same tank as some cow's milk. Determined to avoid any waste of milk, the cheesemakers continued to craft cheese with the mixed milk to see how it would taste. Delighted with their creation, the cheese went on to win the hearts of guests at a food show, before becoming an instant hit.

Rushmore is rich and creamy with a subtle floral sweetness and a lingering finish.

The highly decorated famous cheese - Sharpham Cremet £14.85 / 480g

Cremet was awarded the heralded 3-stars in the Great Taste Awards, putting them in the top 2% of the largest and most trusted food and drink awards on the planet. Handcrafted from goat's milk and cow's double cream, judges said the cheese was 'exquisite' and 'extraordinary' in blind taste tests.

With nothing else like it produced in the UK, Sharpham's Cremet has a subtle, fresh and creamy flavour, with a mousse like texture when young, deepening to a full, rich flavour with earthy undertones when ripe.

The new accompaniment - Sharpham Dairy Scotch Bonnet Chilli Jam £4.50 / 230g

Introducing the new Sharpham Dairy Scotch Bonnet Chilli Jam to adds a welcome kick to warming wintery flavours.

Perfectly balanced, it packs a punch with heat and sweetness in one delicious package. It's the perfect accompaniment with Christmas gammon, cold cuts or the all-important festive cheeseboard.

Top Tips from the Big Cheese - Greg Parsons

Greg believes there's no right or wrong way to building the ultimate cheeseboard – it's all about preference. Here are top tips for making cheese selections over Christmas.

How to pair wine and cheese

It's a good rule of thumb to pair cheese and wines with equal intensity. Generally, creamy soft cheeses pair beautifully with sparkling wines. If you're going for a cheese with a delicate character, avoid overpowering it with a full bodied red wine.

As you venture into the realm of complex aged cheeses, look for bold or fortified wines to match them with. It's also true what they say, what grows together, goes together. For example, Sharpham Wine and Cheese are made along the River Dart and the terroir shapes products that pair exceptionally well together.

How much cheese to serve?

If you plan to serve cheese as part of a meal, a typical recommendation is to provide 80g per person. However, over the Christmas period, guests may wish to savour the cheeseboard with drinks, so consider increasing the amount to 150g per person.

What cheeses to go for?

Opting for a variety of textures and characters is a guaranteed way to please everyone. A classic choice includes a blue cheese, a soft cheese, a semi-hard cheese, a cheddar and a goat's cheese.

Sharpham Dairy has gathered up some of the most popular cheeses in the 'Essential Devon Cheese Board' - £30. Includes the Devon classics; Sharpham Brie, Sharpham Rustic, Sharpham Ticklemore Goat, Quicke's Mature Cheddar and Ticklemore Devon Blue.

Top pairings for the Christmas season

Greg says, “I love the delicate floral notes of our Sharpham Rushmore paired with a light-bodied, aromatic white such as a sauvignon blanc.

“Christmas is a time for popping open the bubbly, which I would pair with one of my favourites – our brie. A good brie is a Christmas cheeseboard essential. I'd also pair our Sharpham Brie with something with a little acidity like apple or plums.”

Final tips:

Once cheese has been cut into, it's best eaten within a couple of weeks. (That's Christmas notes that the life of our cheeses once open is often measured in days or even hours rather than weeks!)

Don't forget to take cheese out of the fridge an hour or two before serving to come up to room temperature.

Do chat to your cheesemonger - they're often a font of knowledge and eager to introduce you to new cheeses, offer tasters and help build the perfect cheeseboard.

Cosy Christmas Décor for Compact Spaces: Designing a Festive Apartment or flat

The Christmas seasons is galloping toward us, and it's getting to be the time to deck the halls with boughs of holly, or in this case, transform your small apartment or flat into a winter wonderland. Limited space doesn't mean you have to compromise on the Festive cheer. With a little ingenuity some creativity and a dash of festive spirit, you can create a cosy and enchanting Christmas theme that perfectly suits your compact living space.

In this blog post, we'll share some practical tips on designing a Christmas theme for your small apartment or flat.

Plan Your Space

Before you dive into the decorations, take a moment to assess your space. Measure the areas you want to decorate, including your living room, dining area, kitchen (if you have a separate kitchen) and any nooks or corners you'd like to accentuate. This will help you avoid overloading the space and ensure your decorations fit comfortably.

Opt for a Minimalistic Approach

In a small apartment, less is often more. Choose a colour scheme that complements your existing décor to create a cohesive look. Classic Christmas colours like red, green, gold, and silver can be incorporated in small details, such as with throw pillows, table runners, and small ornaments. Consider a neutral base, like white or silver, to make your space feel more open and airy.

Choose Space-Saving Decorations

Small apartments require a creative approach to decorations. Go for slimline Christmas trees, wall-mounted or tabletop options, instead of large, floor-standing trees. Hang wreaths and garlands to make use of vertical space, and select decorations that don't take up much room, such as mini ornaments or fairy lights.

Embrace the Power of Lights

Christmas lights add a warm and magical touch to any space. Use fairy lights, string lights, and LED candles to create a cosy ambiance. Hang them along your windows, drape them on your walls, or place them in glass jars for a subtle, yet charming, effect.

DIY Ornaments and Décor

Get creative with DIY ornaments and décor. Craft your own paper snowflakes, garlands, or personalised ornaments. Not only will this add a unique and personal touch to your decorations, but it's also a fun and budget-friendly way to get into the holiday spirit. (That's Christmas has covered personalised ornaments and we'll refer back to the blogpost at the end of this post.)

Space-Conscious Tree Decorations

If you have a small tree, be selective with your ornaments. Use lightweight and smaller decorations to avoid weighing down the branches. Consider using a tree topper that won't overwhelm your tree, like a delicate star or a mini angel.

Multi-Purpose Furniture

Select furniture that serves a dual purpose. A foldable dining table can be a fantastic addition to your apartment, allowing you to host festive gatherings when it's required. Also, consider furniture with built-in storage for stashing away your decorations after the Christmas and New Year period is oved.

Festive Table Setting

Create a festive table setting with holiday-themed dinnerware, napkins, and placemats. Utilise candles (real or electric)  small centrepieces, and personalised name cards to make your dining area feel extra special.

Incorporate Seasonal Scents

Enhance the holiday ambiance by introducing seasonal scents. Scented candles, essential oil diffusers, or potpourri with cinnamon, pine, or gingerbread fragrances will make your apartment feel even more festive. But do be cautious as some guests might be allergic to some scents.

Personal Touch

Lastly, add your personal touch to your Christmas theme. Display cherished family ornaments or mementos, and don't forget to hang stockings for Santa's visit!

Designing a Christmas theme for a small apartment or flat can be a delightful and creative endeavour. By planning your space, embracing a minimalistic approach, utilizing space-saving decorations, and adding your personal touch, you can create a coy and festive atmosphere that makes your compact living space feel like a winter wonderland.

With the right mix of creativity and holiday spirit, you'll be ready to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year in style, no matter how small your space may be.

Rediscovering the True Meaning of Christmas: A Guide to Reconnect with the Spirit of Christmas

In our modern world, the Christmas season often gets overshadowed by consumerism, materialism, and the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.

We may find ourselves caught up in the frenzy of Christmas shopping, decorating, and party planning, but in the midst of all this, it's all too easy to forget the real meaning of Christmas. However, it's never too late to reclaim the essence of this cherished season. In this blog post, we'll explore some heartfelt ways to get the real meaning of Christmas back.

Reflect on the Origin

To reconnect with the true meaning of Christmas, it's important to reflect on its origin. Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is considered by Christians as the Saviour of the world. Take time to read the nativity story from the Bible and contemplate the significance of Jesus' birth. Understanding the spiritual foundation of Christmas can help you regain its true essence.

Practice Gratitude

Christmas is a time for gratitude and giving. Instead of focusing solely on what you want to receive, take a moment to appreciate what you have and consider how you can give back to others. Whether it's through acts of kindness, volunteering, or donating to charity, practicing gratitude can bring you closer to the heart of Christmas.

Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones

Amidst the seasonal chaos, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of spending time with loved ones. Make a conscious effort to connect with family and friends. Share stories, laughter, and make memories that will last a lifetime. These moments of togetherness are at the core of what makes Christmas special.

Embrace the Spirit of Giving

Instead of viewing gift-giving as a chore, approach it as an opportunity to show love and appreciation for those you care about. Thoughtful, meaningful gifts don't have to be expensive; they can be handcrafted or chosen with care to reflect the recipient's interests and needs.

Simplify Your Celebrations

In our consumer-driven society, it's easy to get caught up in the pressure to have the biggest and brightest decorations or the most extravagant parties. Consider simplifying your Christmas celebrations. Focus on what truly matters: the people you're with and the love and joy you share.

Create Meaningful Traditions

Traditions are a wonderful way to connect with the past and create lasting memories. Establish meaningful traditions that resonate with your family and values. Whether it's carolling in the neighbourhood, baking biscuits, or volunteering together, these traditions can help you reconnect with the spirit of Christmas.

Reflect and Meditate

Take some time during the Christmas season to reflect and meditate on the deeper meaning of Christmas. Consider the virtues of love, compassion, and forgiveness that are associated with this holiday. Personal reflection can help you internalise these values and live them more fully throughout the year.

Give Back to the Community

One powerful way to rediscover the true meaning of Christmas is to give back to your community. Consider volunteering at a local shelter, food bank, or charity organisation. Helping those in need can remind you of the importance of selflessness and generosity.

Conclusion

Christmas is a time to celebrate love, compassion, and the birth of Jesus Christ. While it's easy to get lost in the commercial aspects of the holiday, by taking deliberate steps to reflect, give back, and spend quality time with loved ones, you can reconnect with the real meaning of Christmas. Let this holiday season be a time of spiritual growth and a rekindling of the values that make Christmas truly special.
