Host Your Own Family Mince Pie Taste Trial: A Fun and Festive Christmas Tradition

As the festive season approaches, it’s that time of year when mince pies start filling supermarket shelves and cafés, tempting us with their buttery pastry, spiced fillings, and sugar-dusted tops.

But with so many options to choose from, how do you know which mince pies are truly worth the calories?

Instead of relying on reviews or online rankings, why not turn it into a fun family event and organise your own mince pie taste trial?

It’s the perfect way to embrace the Christmas spirit, have some laughs, and crown your family's favourite mince pie of the season!

Here’s a guide to organising your very own taste trial to determine which supermarket or café chain truly reigns supreme in the world of mince pies.

Step 1: Plan Ahead and Gather Your Pies

To make your mince pie taste trial a success, you’ll need a good selection of pies from various supermarkets and cafés. In the UK, many well-known names offer their take on the festive treat, so consider including options from:

Supermarkets: Marks & Spencer, Asda, Morrisons, Booths, Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, and Lidl.

Café chains: Costa Coffee, Caffè Nero, Pret A Manger, and Greggs.

Aim to include a mix of both budget-friendly and premium mince pies to see if price truly reflects quality. Depending on the size of your gathering, plan to get at least one pie per person from each brand so everyone can have a decent taste.

Tip: To ensure you’re tasting the latest batches, purchase the pies as close to the trial date as possible.

Step 2: Set Up the Taste Test

To keep things fair and unbiased, turn your taste trial into a blind taste test. Here’s how:

Remove all packaging: Take the mince pies out of their boxes and place them on plates, assigning each brand a number instead. Make a note of which brand corresponds to each number and keep this list hidden.

Keep it simple: Label each plate with a numbered card, so no one knows which brand they’re sampling.

Cut the pies into quarters: If you have a larger group, this ensures everyone gets to try a bit without getting too full. Plus, it allows you to stretch your budget further.

Step 3: Prepare Tasting Scorecards

Create scorecards for your guests to rate the mince pies on different criteria. You can either design your own cards or use a simple format like the one below:

Criteria Score (1-10)

Appearance

Pastry texture

Filling flavour

Balance of spices

Overall impression

Ask each family member to rate the pies from 1 to 10 for each category. Encourage everyone to make notes on what they liked or disliked about each pie. To make things even more fun, you can add extra categories like "Most Christmassy Aroma" or "Best for a Cup of Tea".

Step 4: Conduct the Tasting

Once everyone is seated and ready, hand out the scorecards and let the tasting begin! To cleanse the palate between samples, provide water, plain crackers, or apple slices. This helps prevent flavours from blending and ensures each mince pie gets a fair assessment.

Encourage your family to take their time savouring each pie, discussing their thoughts as they go along. This is where the festive fun really begins as opinions are shared, debated, and defended!

Step 5: Tally Up the Results and Announce the Winner

After the tasting is complete, collect everyone’s scorecards and add up the results. Reveal which mince pies correspond to each number and announce your family's top mince pie of the season!

For added excitement, you could even create fun awards such as:

Best Value for Money: The pie that offered the best taste for its price.

Most Traditional Flavour: For the mince pie that stayed true to classic tastes.

Best Pastry: Celebrating the crispiest, flakiest, and most buttery crust.

Family Favourite: The pie that received the highest overall score.

Step 6: Celebrate with a Hot Drink and Leftover Pies

Once the results are in, it’s time to relax and celebrate with a festive drink. Pair the remaining mince pies with a pot of spiced tea, mulled wine, or hot chocolate, and toast to a successful taste trial. It's a wonderful way to wrap up the evening and get into the Christmas spirit.

Bonus Tips for a Successful Taste Trial

Decorate your space: Add some festive decorations, play Christmas music, and light a few candles to create a cosy, celebratory atmosphere.

Get the kids involved: Children will love helping with the set-up and scorecards. You can also create a kid-friendly category, where they rate based on sweetness or the amount of fruit filling.

Document the fun: Capture photos of the tasting event, especially those funny moments when someone tries a particularly divisive pie! These memories will be lovely to look back on year after year.

Why This Tradition is Worth Starting

Organising a mince pie taste trial is a fantastic way to bring family together during the festive season. Not only does it add a bit of fun and excitement to your Christmas preparations, but it also gives everyone the chance to bond over a shared love of delicious festive treats.

And who knows? You might just discover a hidden gem that becomes your new go-to mince pie each year. So gather your loved ones, sharpen your taste buds, and let the mince pie judging begin!

Happy Tasting and Merry Christmas!

Incidentally the genesis of this blogpost came when I bought two different types of mince pie and I thought: "Hang on! This needs to be on That's Christmas!"¬

Embrace the Spirit of Christmas: Take the That's Christmas £20 Challenge to Support Your Local High Street

As the festive season approaches, we’re all looking forward to gathering with loved ones, decorating our homes, and finding those perfect gifts.

But amid the buzz and cheer of Christmas, there’s a chance to make a real difference to the places that matter most — our local high streets.

In recent years, high streets across the UK have faced challenging times, with online shopping and big chains often taking the spotlight.

That’s where the That’s Christmas £20 Challenge comes in. We’re inviting you to spend at least £20 on your local high street this Christmas season to support independent shops, unique artisans, and local eateries.

Why Your £20 Matters This Christmas

You might be wondering, “What can £20 do?” When you shop locally, your £20 has an impact far beyond what you’d imagine. Every purchase helps small businesses thrive, creating jobs, strengthening local economies, and preserving the unique character of our towns and villages.

Imagine your local bookshop, family-run cafe, or the independent boutique that adds a special charm to the high street. They’re more than just places to buy things — they’re where we gather, make memories, and meet neighbours. By taking on the £20 Challenge, you’re helping keep these treasures alive.

Ideas for Your £20

Not sure where to start? Here are a few festive ways to put your £20 to good use on the high street:

Stocking Fillers & Small Gifts: Pick up some delightful stocking fillers or handcrafted gifts from your local artisan shop. Many independent retailers offer unique, one-of-a-kind items that you won’t find elsewhere.

Treat Yourself at a Local Cafe: Enjoy a cosy afternoon with a warm drink and a slice of homemade cake from a nearby cafe. Or take a break from shopping with a festive hot chocolate or mulled wine, or a pint of a specially brewed Christmas ale.

Support Local Grocers & Delis: Get the freshest produce, meats, cheeses, and baked goods for your Christmas table by shopping at your local grocer or deli. It’s a delicious way to share the love this season.

Festive Décor from Independent Shops: From handcrafted ornaments to wreaths and candles, local shops are bursting with charming seasonal decorations to make your home extra festive.

Gift Vouchers: Many small businesses offer vouchers, which make wonderful gifts. Supporting local hairdressers, salons, and other service providers means you’re helping them keep doing what they do best.

Spread the Word and Make It a Movement

Taking on the £20 Challenge is not only about making a personal commitment to support local businesses; it’s also about inspiring others to join in. Spread the word on social media using the hashtag #ThatsChristmas£20Challenge, and encourage friends, family, and neighbours to shop locally too. Together, our small actions can create a big impact!

The Joy of Giving Back

There’s something uniquely heartwarming about knowing that your Christmas spending is helping real people within your community. Your £20 can be the difference that helps a small shop owner have a wonderful Christmas, provides a local artisan with a meaningful sale, or helps a family-run eatery keep their doors open.

So this Christmas, why not start a new tradition? Let’s keep the spirit of giving close to home and show our support for the high streets that bring so much character to our communities.

Join us in the That’s Christmas £20 Challenge — a small spend, but a gift of lasting impact. Happy Christmas shopping!

The That's Christmas Guide to Eating Well, Feeling Good, and Living Better This Christmas

The festive season is fast approaching, and with it comes the promise of delicious feasts, joyous celebrations, and, let’s be honest, a little bit of indulgence.

While Christmas is a time for merrymaking, it’s also an opportunity to focus on our well-being, both physical and mental.

This year, why not gift yourself and your loved ones a guide to eating well, feeling good, and living better?

The Art of Eating Well

Christmas is synonymous with food, from the traditional roast dinner to the endless selection of sweets and treats. However, eating well doesn’t mean you have to forgo the delights of the season. It’s about balance, quality, and mindfulness.

Embrace Whole Foods: Incorporate more whole foods into your festive meals. Fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins not only nourish your body but also add vibrant flavours to your table. Consider roasted Brussels sprouts with chestnuts, quinoa-stuffed peppers, or a hearty lentil stew as part of your Christmas spread.

Portion Control with Pleasure: Enjoy your favourite festive foods, but be mindful of portion sizes. Smaller servings allow you to savour each bite without overindulging. Remember, you can always go back for seconds if you’re still hungry!

Smart Snacking: Christmas is often filled with grazing and snacking. Opt for healthier choices like nuts, fruit, or dark chocolate. These options satisfy your cravings and provide essential nutrients, keeping your energy levels stable throughout the day.

Stay Hydrated: With all the excitement, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when indulging in rich foods and festive drinks. Start your day with a glass of water, and keep a bottle close by to sip throughout the celebrations.

Feeling Good Inside and Out

Christmas can be a whirlwind of activities, and it’s important to take care of your mental and physical health amidst the hustle and bustle.

Mindful Eating: Slow down and truly enjoy your meals. Take the time to appreciate the flavours, textures, and aromas of your food. Mindful eating not only enhances your dining experience but also aids digestion and helps you tune in to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

Keep Moving: Incorporate some form of physical activity into your daily routine, even during the festive season. A brisk walk, a dance session in the living room, or a quick yoga flow can do wonders for your mood and overall well-being. Exercise helps counteract the effects of indulgent meals and keeps your energy levels up.

Prioritise Rest: With parties, shopping, and socialising, it’s easy to skimp on sleep. However, getting enough rest is essential for maintaining your health and well-being. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, and don’t be afraid to take a nap if you need it.

Practice Gratitude: Christmas is a time for reflection and gratitude. Take a moment each day to acknowledge the things you’re thankful for. Practising gratitude has been shown to improve mental health, enhance relationships, and boost overall happiness.

Living Better Through the Festive Season

Living better this Christmas is about finding joy in simplicity, being present in the moment, and creating meaningful connections with loved ones.

Simplify Your Celebrations: This year, consider scaling back on the excess and focusing on what truly matters. Whether it’s opting for homemade gifts, choosing fewer but more meaningful presents, or simplifying your Christmas dinner menu, a more mindful approach can reduce stress and enhance your enjoyment.

Quality Time Over Quantity: Christmas is about spending time with loved ones. Instead of trying to fit in as many events as possible, focus on creating quality moments with the people who matter most. A cosy night in with family, a leisurely walk with a friend, or a heartfelt conversation can leave lasting memories.

Give Back: There’s no better way to live better than by giving back to others. Whether it’s donating to a charity, volunteering your time, or simply offering a kind gesture to someone in need, acts of kindness enrich your own life and spread the true spirit of Christmas.

Set Intentions for the New Year: As the year comes to a close, take some time to reflect on the past twelve months and set positive intentions for the year ahead. Whether it’s adopting healthier habits, pursuing a new passion, or deepening your relationships, setting intentions can help you start the new year on a positive note.

This Christmas, let’s make a conscious effort to eat well, feel good, and live better. By embracing balance, mindfulness, and simplicity, we can enjoy all the delights of the season while nurturing our bodies, minds, and spirits. So, as you deck the halls and prepare for the festivities, remember that the best gift you can give yourself and others is the gift of well-being. Merry Christmas!

There Are Only 161 Days to Christmas. So Perhaps Today is the Day to Start Planning Ahead?

Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year, is now just 161 days away. While it may seem like an eternity for some, in reality, the festive season will be upon us before we know it.

With the hustle and bustle that comes with Christmas preparations, starting early can save you from the last-minute scramble and allow you to fully enjoy the holiday spirit.

Here are some reasons why today might just be the perfect day to start planning ahead.

1. Spread the Cost

One of the most stressful aspects of Christmas can be the financial burden it brings. By starting to shop early, you can spread the cost over several months rather than facing a hefty bill in December. Look out for sales and discounts throughout the year; Black Friday and Cyber Monday are great opportunities to snag some bargains.

2. Avoid the Last-Minute Rush

The festive season is notorious for crowded shops, long queues, and out-of-stock items. By planning and shopping early, you can avoid the chaos and ensure that you get everything on your list without the stress. Plus, early shopping means you can take your time to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones.

3. Personalised Gifts

If you love giving personalised gifts, starting early is essential. Customised items can take longer to produce and ship, especially during the busy holiday season. By ordering now, you can ensure that your unique gifts arrive on time and make a lasting impression.

4. Plan Your Festive Activities

Christmas is not just about gifts; it’s also about creating memories. Whether it’s hosting a Christmas party, attending a festive concert, or going ice skating, planning ahead allows you to schedule and book your favourite activities in advance. This way, you won’t miss out on the experiences that make Christmas special.

5. Reduce Stress

The holiday season can be incredibly stressful, but early planning can help alleviate some of that pressure. By getting organised now, you can avoid the last-minute rush and enjoy a more relaxed and joyful Christmas. Make a list of everything you need to do, from decorating the house to planning the Christmas dinner menu, and tackle it bit by bit.

6. Travel Arrangements

If you’re planning to travel over the holidays, now is the time to book your tickets and accommodation. Travel prices often skyrocket closer to Christmas, and availability can become limited. Booking early can save you money and ensure you have a stress-free journey to your holiday destination.

7. Sustainable Choices

Starting early also gives you the opportunity to make more sustainable choices. You can take your time to find eco-friendly gifts, wrapping paper, and decorations. Additionally, spreading out your purchases reduces the environmental impact of shipping multiple items at once.

8. Create a Christmas Countdown

Building anticipation for Christmas can be just as exciting as the day itself. Create a countdown calendar and start planning little activities and treats for each day leading up to Christmas. This can be a fun way to get the whole family involved and build excitement.

9. That's Christmas

Remember, That's Christmas will be with you every step of the way to Christmas Day itself, with recipes, and Christmas season foods and drinks to try. Plus there will  news of some fantastic Christmas gifts that will fill Christmas stockings all over the world!

Also, please check out are sister site, That's Food and Drink https://thatsfoodanddrink.blogspot.com.

Conclusion

While it might seem premature to start thinking about Christmas in July, planning ahead can make a significant difference in your holiday experience. By spreading out the cost, avoiding the last-minute rush, and creating a more organised and stress-free environment, you’ll be able to enjoy the festive season to its fullest. So, why not start today? After all, there are only 161 days to Christmas!

"Boost Your Business for Free with That's Food and Drink & That's Christmas Blogs"

In the digital age, online presence is a crucial aspect of promoting your business. With countless marketing strategies available, it's often challenging to find cost-effective ways to reach a wider audience.

However, two valuable resources stand out - That's Food and Drink and That's Christmas blogs. These popular platforms offer businesses a unique opportunity to promote themselves for free. In this blog post, we'll explore how these blogs can help your business gain visibility, build credibility, and drive engagement without breaking the bank. (Yes, we are blowing our own trumpets. But if not us, who else?)

1. Showcase Your Products and Services

One of the most effective ways to promote your business is by showcasing your products or services. Whether you're in the food and beverage industry or have Christmas-themed offerings, That's Food and Drink and That's Christmas blogs provide a platform to feature what you have to offer. These blogs often have a dedicated section for business features or product spotlights. By submitting your business or product, you can reach their large, engaged audience who are already interested in your niche.

2. Gain Credibility and Trust

Being featured on reputable blogs can significantly boost your business's credibility. Both That's Food and Drink and That's Christmas blogs have earned their readers' trust by consistently providing high-quality content. When your business gets mentioned on these blogs, potential customers are more likely to trust your brand. This is an excellent way to build a positive reputation and influence the decision-making process of your target audience.

3. Reach a Targeted Audience

The key to successful promotion is reaching the right audience. That's Food and Drink and That's Christmas blogs are specialized in their respective niches, which means they have a dedicated readership interested in food, beverages, and Christmas-related topics. This focused audience is more likely to engage with your content and convert into customers, making it a valuable opportunity for businesses in these sectors.

4. SEO Benefits

Getting featured on these blogs can also have indirect but powerful SEO benefits. When your business is mentioned in a well-established blog, it creates valuable backlinks to your website. These backlinks can improve your website's search engine ranking, making it easier for potential customers to find your business when searching online.

5. Social Media Exposure

Both blogs have active social media profiles and regularly share their featured content. When your business is featured, it's likely to be shared across their social media channels, giving you additional exposure to a broader audience. This can lead to increased brand recognition and engagement on social platforms.

6. Leverage the Christmas Season

For That's Christmas, the Christmas season is a perfect time to gain exposure. Businesses related to Christmas gifts, decorations, and festivities can leverage the blog's holiday-themed content to showcase their offerings and generate more sales during this peak period.

7. Networking Opportunities

Engaging with That's Food and Drink and That's Christmas blogs also opens doors to networking opportunities. You may connect with other businesses in your industry, exchange ideas, and potentially collaborate on future projects.

In conclusion, That's Food and Drink and That's Christmas blogs offer businesses valuable exposure and promotion opportunities for free. By leveraging their established platforms, businesses can reach a targeted audience, gain credibility, improve SEO, and enjoy the benefits of social media exposure. If you want to increase your brand's visibility and grow your customer base without breaking the bank, consider reaching out to these blogs for potential features. It's a cost-effective way to enhance your marketing efforts and build a strong online presence for your business.

Savvy Shoppers are looking for Christmas bargains

Esendex data has learned that over three-quarters (78%) of UK consumers will stop spending up to a month before Black Friday so they can snap up bargains in the sales. Retailers need to be ready early, with over half (51%) of consumers wanting to hear about Black Friday up to two weeks in advance, and a further 28% wanting news a month ahead.

Head of Professional Services at Esendex, Chris Gorman, says the data shows UK shoppers are looking for personalised marketing, with SMS text and email top of the list and WhatsApp growing in popularity. “These channels are where shoppers talk to each other, so why not the companies and brands they buy from?

“With statistics showing 48% of people are on their phone between four and eight hours a day, and seven in ten checking any unread notifications within five minutes, SMS and WhatsApp are two of the quickest ways to grab the attention of customers.”

Optimise the online experience!

Ecommerce has gone some way towards levelling the field for small and large retailers. Building an online presence makes products more accessible than a bricks and mortar store, and gives smaller retailers access to a larger audience, too. A well-built website that’s optimised for mobile users with a smooth online experience, can improve brand credibility, extend reach, and make promotional campaigns more cost-effective.

Extend platform choice

On average, UK consumers are bombarded with between 6,000 and 10,000 ads a day, even outside of peak trading periods, so little wonder that the battle for engagement is intense.

When shoppers are looking for bargains, they're often shopping on all channels at once. And those hunting for bargains on four or more platforms will spend on average 9% more with a business than single channel shoppers.

Deliver value, not just discount

It’s easy to think peak season sales are all about discounts, but consumer behaviour has changed, and value isn’t always about price. UK consumers are more conscious than ever of a need to support smaller independent businesses and to contribute to their local community.

Obviously, That's Christmas sees a massive increase in people visiting our site from August/September onwards to Christmas Even itself, as they search for Christmas gifts, foods, drinks, new and traditional recipes to try and, especially keeping in mind the current cost of living situation, as readers of That's Christmas are smart and savvy shoppers, they are also looking for money saving bargains, too!

Plan ahead for Christmas and save money!

It's often difficult buying what you need for Christmas, the food and drink, presents, decorations, etc.

However, with the current economic situation, things might be a bit tighter than usual, this Christmas.

Some people will flex the plastic or even take out expensive loans and then face a New Year of penury and hardship as a result.

But it doesn't have to be like that at all! Here is the simple That's Christmas Plan Ahead for Christmas Programme!

1) If your shop or supermarket has a savings club, sign up for it and save a small amount of money for Christmas.

2) If you see an item that would make an ideal Christmas present for a family member, buy it when you see it (so long as the price is keen) and put it away for Christmas.

3) Rather than buying a large amount of drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) at Christmas and risking buying more than you'll need, add a bottle or two to your weekly shops between now and Christmas. If you find you need more you can always pop out to the shops when you need to.

4) Bearing in mind use by and best before dates, stock up on foods for Christmas well before the Christmas season. And avoid any potential pre-Christmas price rises that might occur!

5) Get crafting! You might be surprised at how good you can be with making special bespoke Christmas gifts for friends and family members. Also, why not try your hand at making unique Christmas decorations? Hobby Craft, Home Bargains, Poundland, Rymans and The Works all stock craft items and art items.

6) Shop around! You'll be pleasantly surprised to find the item you wanted to buy at a much lower price in a discount shop.

7) Check out local/regional Christmas Markets to see of there are any you'll be able to get to. However, if you are looking out for genuine Continental Christmas products/produce then the German discount stores Aldi and Lidl are both well worth checking out.

IWOOT customer spreads joy and cheer... and it’s not even Christmas!

Over 3,000 customers invested in the utterly fantastic Christmas pudding bin bags from gift and gadget site www.Iwantoneofthose.com last Christmas.

IWOOT, which is owned by The Hut Group, the UK’s leading, multi-website online retailer received over 25,000 inbound emails, more than 16,000 telephone calls, 1,500 live chats and 2,500 social media queries over Christmas.

After such a demanding time of year, IWOOT’s customer service department were delighted to receive a poem from a happy customer who was clearly delighted by the product and service he received from Iwantoneofthose.com

Dear I Want One Of Those dot com
I am writing to you – London I’m from –
To thank you for bin bags so festively bright;
They were such a Christmassy delight!

The bin bags are strong and of excellent size
And to top it all, came with hard wearing ties
So rubbish stayed in, and made us feel good;
Who can help but smile at a huge Christmas pud!

There was a tense moment pre-bin bag appearance
As it dawned that amongst festive postal interference
The bin bags went missing, aghast I did feel
Black bin bags don’t cut it, pud shaped ones are unreal!

Mr Berry, Customer Service Headquarters chap
Hastily sent out replacements, apologised for the mishap
Festive bright pudding bags arrived well in time
For Christmas day, hence my most grateful rhyme.

So, in short, I give these bags maximum stars
And too for the IWOOT superstars;
Our Christmas season was entirely enhanced
I looked upon the bags and sang, laughed and danced
Once you’ve purchased these wonders you’ll never go back
To unfestive bin bags of boring-est black.

www.iwantoneofthose.com was launched in 2000 as an online retailer offering a selection of quirky, ‘off the wall’ gifts including gadgets, gizmos, toys, photo gifts, experience days and home and office accessories. IWOOT is an ideal gift shopping solution for those who have everything, a great place to buy things you don’t really need but really, really want! All orders come with free UK delivery.

(EDITOR: This is actually a fine example of good customer service. Some other firms would have shrugged their shoulders and said: "It's nothing to do with us! It's the delivery firm!"

But IWOOT did not do that. Although it was not their problem, they took responsibility for the problem and solved it to the satisfaction and delight of the customer. Well done, IWOOT! That's Christmas salutes you! May your order book be even fuller next Christmas!)
