Sourcing the Perfect Christmas Gift for the ‘Problematic’ Person in Your Life

Every family or friend group has that one person – the 'problematic' gift recipient who seems impossible to please.

Whether they’re incredibly particular, noncommittal, or someone who claims to "not want anything," finding the perfect gift for them can feel like a Herculean task.

But don’t worry! With a bit of thought, creativity, and strategy, you can still find something that’ll bring a smile to even the trickiest person’s face this Christmas. Here’s how to go about it.

1. Understanding Their Preferences (Even if They Seem Nonexistent)

The first step is to try and understand what makes them tick. Some “difficult” recipients simply have very specific preferences, while others don’t necessarily realise what they want until they see it. Take a moment to think about their hobbies, interests, lifestyle, and any preferences they’ve subtly (or not so subtly) mentioned in the past.

Consider asking these questions:

Do they love trying new things, or are they creatures of habit?

Are they more interested in experiences or items?

Do they lean towards practicality or sentimentality?

If you’re not certain, talking to those close to them or subtly listening in when they mention things they like or enjoy can provide you with some valuable clues.

2. Go for Quality Over Quantity

Often, people with very particular tastes will appreciate something well-made over a pile of generic items. Instead of going for multiple smaller gifts, think about a single, high-quality gift that aligns with their interests. Quality items show thoughtfulness, and they often suit even those with discerning taste.

For example, a top-quality wool scarf for someone who values winter fashion, or a beautifully crafted notebook for the friend who loves jotting down ideas, shows that you’ve made a meaningful choice.

3. Personalised Gifts – When Done Right

Personalisation can be tricky, but when it’s done thoughtfully, it can result in a truly cherished gift. Avoid simply slapping their initials on a mug and instead focus on items they would genuinely use. A leather wallet embossed with their initials, a set of monogrammed bath towels, or a custom recipe book with their favourite dishes (especially if they’re a foodie!) can go a long way in adding a thoughtful touch.

Tip: Consider their sense of style when personalising; some people prefer minimalism, while others love a touch of uniqueness.

4. Experience Gifts for the Person Who “Doesn’t Want Anything”

If they’re someone who insists they don’t want any material gifts, think outside the box and gift an experience instead. Experience gifts range from spa days and wine tasting tours to online classes or cooking workshops. The great thing about experiences is that they leave lasting memories, making them perfect for those who already “have everything.”

Consider these experiences:

A weekend staycation at a charming B&B

Tickets to a show, concert, or sports event they’d enjoy

A cooking or crafting class they’ve been interested in

An experience shows that you’re giving them something beyond the tangible and providing them with something to look forward to.

5. Subscription Services – For Long-Term Enjoyment

Subscriptions are gifts that keep on giving – quite literally. There’s a subscription service for almost every interest, from monthly book clubs and coffee samplers to flower deliveries and wellness boxes. Subscriptions let you tailor the gift to their interests while ensuring they think of you throughout the year.

Subscription ideas include:

A monthly magazine subscription related to their hobby or profession

A streaming service they’ve been wanting to try

A gourmet snack box that delivers treats from around the world

6. Opt for Something Useful (And Unexpectedly Delightful)

If your recipient is known for being practical or difficult to impress, consider choosing something that’s highly useful – yet something they might not think to buy for themselves. This could be anything from luxury skincare items to unique kitchen gadgets or even a portable coffee maker for someone who travels frequently.

Some ideas include:

A high-quality reusable water bottle for the eco-conscious

A beautifully designed planner for the organiser in your life

A multi-tool for the avid DIYer

7. Give the Gift of Choice

If they’re truly impossible to shop for, give them the gift of choice – a gift card. But go for something more thoughtful than a general voucher. Think of stores or services they genuinely like and let them have the pleasure of picking out their gift themselves.

Opt for gift cards for:

A local independent bookstore for the reader

An upmarket kitchenware shop for the home chef

A boutique clothing shop if they love fashion

While some may say gift cards are impersonal, a carefully chosen one actually shows you’ve paid attention to their interests. Plus, it’s better to give them the power to choose than risk something that will gather dust.

8. Consider Handmade or DIY Gifts for Sentimentality

Sometimes, the most cherished gifts aren’t the most expensive but the ones with a personal touch. If your recipient appreciates sentimental or unique gifts, consider creating something handmade or DIY. A handmade scarf, a set of homemade jams, or even a scrapbook filled with photos and memories can go a long way in showing care and thoughtfulness. Plus, DIY gifts can be a fun way to put your own personality and affection into a present.

A Thoughtful Approach Wins Every Time

At the end of the day, the goal is to show thoughtfulness and care. Even for the most “problematic” recipients, a well-considered gift can be a lovely gesture, especially when it aligns with their tastes or interests. Remember, the perfect gift doesn’t have to be extravagant – it just has to show you’ve taken the time to understand and appreciate the person you’re shopping for.

This Christmas, tackle the challenge head-on and relish the joy that comes with finding that perfect gift – even for the most difficult-to-please person in your life!

Baby's first Christmas. A festive story

This is just a short Christmas-themed story that we hope you'll enjoy. Maybe you can read it to your little ones?

Snowflakes swirled around outside as the cosy little cottage glowed with warm light, nestled in the heart of a quiet village.

It was Christmas Eve, and everything was draped in soft decorations of red, green, and gold. This year, it wasn’t just the stockings hung by the fireplace or the twinkling lights on the Christmas tree that made the season feel magical – it was the presence of a tiny new family member.

Lily and Tom watched their infant son, Max, who was sleeping soundly in his crib, blissfully unaware of the festive wonder happening around him. It was Max’s first Christmas, and they wanted to make every moment as special as possible, even if he wouldn’t remember it himself.

That evening, as the fire crackled and the tree lights glimmered, Lily carefully placed a little red-and-white stocking by Max’s crib. It was a bit smaller than the others – perfectly sized for tiny treasures and first memories. Inside, she tucked in a soft little teddy bear, a rattle with a small silver bell, and a baby blanket knitted by her grandmother.

“Do you think he’ll notice?” Tom whispered, smiling as he placed a Christmas card next to the stocking, with “To our Baby Max” written in a gentle scrawl.

“He might not,” Lily chuckled, “but one day, when he looks at the photos, he’ll know how much love was here from the start.”

The two of them sat together, marvelling at Max’s little hands and peaceful face. They thought about all the Christmases yet to come,  the ones where he’d be old enough to laugh at silly holiday videos, bake biscuits, and run down the stairs, excited for presents. But tonight, they were perfectly content with this soft, quiet evening, full of dreams and wishes for his future.

As the clock neared midnight, they heard a gentle gurgle. Max’s eyes fluttered open, catching the warm glow of the lights. He stared up at his parents, wide-eyed and curious, as if sensing the magic in the air. Lily smiled, reaching down to stroke his tiny fingers.

“Merry Christmas, little one,” she whispered.

With that, they picked him up and carried him over to the Christmas tree. They wanted him to see the sparkles, the colours, and feel the love that filled the room. Max, though young, looked around with his sleepy eyes, as if taking it all in. And maybe, in his own way, he was.

Tom placed a delicate ornament on the tree – a small silver bauble engraved with “Baby’s First Christmas 2024.” It was a keepsake that would hang on their tree every year, a reminder of this quiet, perfect Christmas Eve, when everything felt new and full of hope.

As snow gently blanketed the village outside, Max slowly drifted back to sleep in his parents’ arms. His little stocking hung proudly by his crib, and the little silver bell on his rattle chimed softly as his parents placed him back down.

Outside, the world was hushed, covered in a soft winter glow, but inside, in the warmth of that little cottage, Max’s first Christmas was one to remember: The beginning of so many happy Christmases yet to come.

The Gift of Subscription Boxes: Bringing Christmas Cheer All Year Round

Finding the perfect gift can be a joy, but let’s face it: choosing something meaningful and memorable can sometimes be a bit daunting.

If you’re looking for a present that will keep your loved ones delighted long after the festive season ends, a subscription box might be the answer. The best part?

With subscription services for everything from chocolates and cheeses to wines and craft beers, you can tailor a gift to your recipient’s tastes, and ensure that Christmas cheer lingers throughout the year.

Here’s a look at some of the most popular (and indulgent!) subscription box ideas for keeping the festive spirit alive all year long.

1. Chocolate Subscription Boxes: A Sweet Monthly Treat

Who doesn’t love chocolate? Whether your loved one is a connoisseur of dark chocolate or has a penchant for truffles and caramels, chocolate subscription boxes make it easy to bring a little joy to their door each month. Many chocolate clubs offer curated selections from artisan chocolatiers, so they’ll get to experience a variety of flavours, textures, and cacao blends. Some even focus on fair trade or organic options, which add a layer of ethical gifting to each sweet parcel.

This is the perfect gift for anyone with a sweet tooth, and with so many options, it’s easy to find a subscription that’s truly unique. Imagine your friend or family member unwrapping beautifully crafted chocolate bars with exciting flavours like chilli-infused dark chocolate, salted caramel, or even seasonal varieties.

2. Wine Club Subscriptions: A World Tour of Wine

For the wine lovers in your life, there’s no better way to celebrate than with a wine club subscription. These memberships typically deliver a curated selection of wines every month, with choices ranging from vintage classics to adventurous new world wines. Most subscriptions also come with tasting notes, food-pairing suggestions, and information on the wine’s origins, so your recipient will not only enjoy a delicious glass but also learn about the unique qualities of each bottle.

Whether they’re a fan of bold reds, crisp whites, or bubbly champagnes, wine clubs offer a personalised experience and a sense of discovery with each delivery. It’s the gift of a monthly indulgence, perfect for winding down a long day or celebrating a special occasion.

3. Craft Beer Subscriptions: A Brew Lover’s Dream

If you know someone who loves a good pint, a craft beer subscription could be just the thing to make their year a little more exciting. With craft breweries popping up everywhere, many beer clubs provide exclusive or hard-to-find selections from both local and international breweries. From IPAs and stouts to pilsners and sours, each delivery is a new adventure in taste.

Most subscriptions come with tasting notes and food-pairing tips, and some even provide branded glassware or coasters. It’s a great way for beer enthusiasts to explore new flavours and find their next favourite brew. This is a gift that truly keeps giving, perfect for sharing with friends or enjoying on a cosy night in.

4. Cheese Clubs: Monthly Decadence for Cheese Lovers

For the cheese aficionado, a cheese subscription is practically a ticket to heaven. Many cheese clubs deliver artisan selections from local farms or international producers, with varieties ranging from creamy bries to sharp cheddars, blue cheese, and tangy goat cheese. Each month brings a chance to sample cheeses they may never have tried, along with notes on flavour profiles, origins, and serving suggestions.

Some cheese subscriptions even pair selections with crackers, chutneys, and pairing notes for wine or beer, creating a complete tasting experience. Imagine the delight on your recipient’s face as they receive a box of gourmet cheeses every month, perfect for sharing with family or enjoying as an indulgent treat.

5. Coffee Subscriptions: Fuel for the Caffeine Enthusiast

If you have a coffee lover on your list, a coffee subscription might be the ideal gift. Coffee clubs typically offer beans from around the world, sourced directly from the farmers and roasted to perfection before being sent out to subscribers. From fruity Ethiopian blends to rich Brazilian roasts, each delivery will be an experience in new and exciting flavours. Many subscriptions allow you to choose whole beans or ground coffee, so it’s convenient for any type of coffee lover.

Some coffee clubs also include tasting notes, brewing tips, and information on each origin, making it an educational experience as well. Whether your loved one is a pour-over fan, a cold brew enthusiast, or someone who simply can’t start the day without a rich espresso, a coffee subscription will keep them happily caffeinated all year.

6. Book Club Subscriptions: An Escape in Every Parcel

For the avid reader, a book club subscription offers the pleasure of receiving a new story each month. Many book subscriptions allow you to tailor the selection to your recipient’s favourite genres, whether they love thrillers, romance, non-fiction, or classic literature. Each month they’ll get a new book to dive into, with some clubs even offering exclusive editions or signed copies.

Some book subscriptions come with added treats like bookmarks, art prints, or themed items that tie into the book. It’s a thoughtful way to give the gift of adventure, excitement, and knowledge throughout the year, offering a mini escape in each delivery.

7. More Subscription Ideas for the Foodie, Fitness Buff, and Beyond

From spices and sauces to artisanal honey or vegan snacks, there’s a subscription service for nearly every interest. For the health-conscious, you can find monthly deliveries of vitamins, protein powders, or fitness accessories. For the home chef, gourmet spice kits or meal kits can inspire creativity in the kitchen. Subscription boxes offer the ultimate way to give a gift that keeps giving. Every month, they provide a little moment of happiness, an opportunity to discover something new, and a reminder of your thoughtfulness. Whether it’s chocolates, wine, cheese, or even books, each delivery is like a mini celebration, a touch of Christmas that lasts all year long. And for the loved ones on your list who seem to have everything, a subscription box might be the most thoughtful—and enduring—gift of all.

Unique and Quirky Gifts for the Quirky, Interesting People in Your Life

If you've got people in your life who march to the beat of their own drum, it’s likely you've found that the usual socks-and-scarf combo just won’t do.

These are the ones who adore the extraordinary, who revel in the unusual, and who cherish the kinds of keepsakes that stand out and tell a story.

Finding gifts for them can be a joy if you think outside the box and, more specifically, into the quirky corners of it

. Here are some fantastic ideas for unique, memorable presents that celebrate the wonderfully eccentric personalities they’re crafted for.

1. Antique Paper Knives: A Slice of Elegance and History

A paper knife is both practical and elegant—a tool once indispensable in an era before self-opening envelopes. Today, antique paper knives are prized for their craftsmanship and history. From carved bone to intricate silver blades, each piece whispers tales of letters opened by candlelight, of sealing wax and long-distance love letters. These little treasures come in all shapes and sizes; some feature intricate engravings, while others might carry a touch of Victorian whimsy or Art Deco flair. They’re perfect for someone who loves the idea of a time when mail was an event, not a nuisance.

2. Handcrafted Ornaments Made from Repurposed Spark Plugs, Wires, nuts and bolts

For those who appreciate recycling and resourcefulness, ornaments made from old spark plugs, bits of wire, and other discarded parts offer a blend of artistry and industrial chic. Crafted by ingenious artisans, these creations range from robots and animals to abstract designs, making each piece a testament to creativity and environmental mindfulness.

Picture a small metal dog sitting on a shelf, or a wire-formed ballerina dancing across a table, or a metal mosquito. These pieces make ideal gifts for those with a love for gritty aesthetics and eco-conscious values.

3. Vintage Curiosities: From Skeleton Keys to Apothecary Bottles

Is there anything more fascinating than a drawer full of forgotten oddments from years gone by? Vintage curiosities make fantastic gifts for anyone who collects trinkets, or even for the aspiring cabinet-of-curiosities creator. Think skeleton keys that once opened doors to rooms long forgotten, old apothecary bottles that once held exotic elixirs, or even pocket watches that stopped ticking decades ago. These treasures hold a mysterious allure and offer an instant conversation starter.

4. Oddball Kitchen Gadgets from a Bygone Era

Many quirky people are avid cooks, so why not add a bit of vintage charm to their kitchen? From butter churns to antique eggbeaters and Victorian sugar tongs, these curious gadgets make for beautiful and functional décor, if not everyday use. Take a look at old-fashioned coffee grinders or ornate cake servers for a bit of bygone glamour. Most can still be put to use, but their old-world charm makes them as much decoration as device.

5. Eccentric Wall Art: Vintage Posters, Botanical Prints, and Beyond

Nothing says “individuality” like bold, unique wall art. For the quirky souls on your list, bypass the usual prints and seek out vintage posters, strange botanical prints, or scientific illustrations that carry a dose of intrigue. Even those strange Victorian medical diagrams can add an unexpectedly stylish twist to a room, especially when framed in reclaimed wood. Alternatively, look for surreal, whimsical pieces or retro artwork that feels personal and unusual.

6. Miniature Terrariums: A Self-Sustaining Ecosystem in a Bottle

Terrariums offer a touch of nature indoors and bring a delightful sense of life to any room. Tiny glass jars filled with moss, tiny plants, and perhaps even a little ceramic creature add a whimsical touch to any desk or windowsill. Some terrariums are open and require a bit of watering, while closed terrariums create their own mini ecosystems and only need the occasional bit of sunlight to thrive. Either way, a miniature world in a jar is sure to charm anyone with a green thumb and a sense of wonder.

7. Taxidermy (The Ethical Kind)

Taxidermy isn’t for everyone, but for those who love natural history, a small, ethically sourced taxidermy specimen can be a fascinating piece of art. Whether it’s a butterfly mounted in a frame, a preserved beetle, or even a tiny rodent, taxidermy has a unique charm for people who appreciate nature’s beauty in an unusual way. Many small businesses specialise in ethically sourced taxidermy, so it’s possible to find these curiosities guilt-free.

8. Handcrafted Stationery with Personality

If your quirky friend loves the tactile experience of writing things down, beautifully crafted stationery is a delightfully unexpected choice. Think handmade journals with covers made from reclaimed wood, paper infused with wildflower seeds, or even personalised wax seals. For an added touch, include a dip pen and ink to give them the full vintage writing experience. Whether they journal daily or only jot down thoughts occasionally, a beautiful writing kit can inspire their creativity in the most old-fashioned way.

9. Quirky Bookends for the Bookish Collector

Bookends are a fantastic way to add a touch of personality to a shelf. Look for options made from unexpected materials like vintage brass, sculpted stone, or iron figurines. For a bit of whimsy, consider bookends in the shape of animals, miniature landscapes, or even quirky geometric shapes. Ideal for book lovers, these unique pieces add a touch of flair to any bookshelf.

Final Thought: Give Them a Story, Not Just a Gift

Gifting should always be about more than simply handing over an item; it should be an opportunity to bring joy, surprise, and a spark of wonder to the recipient. With these quirky, offbeat options, you’re not just giving a gift—you’re giving a story, a piece of history, a little mystery, and a dash of character. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the quirky, interesting people in your life who make the world so much more intriguing.
