Christmas Drinks: Mulled Wine, Eggnog, and Other Festive Favourites

Christmas is a time for indulgence, celebration, and of course, delicious festive drinks to keep the chill at bay.

As the cold winds blow and twinkling lights adorn our homes, there’s nothing quite like wrapping your hands around a warm mug or glass brimming with seasonal flavours.

From the traditional mulled wine to creamy eggnog, these drinks are perfect for adding a bit of warmth and cheer to your holiday season.

Here are some classic recipes and a few twists on festive favourites to try this Christmas.

1. Mulled Wine

Mulled wine is a quintessential Christmas drink that’s popular across Europe, and for good reason. This warm, spiced red wine, infused with seasonal aromas, is the perfect antidote to winter’s cold.

Ingredients:

1 bottle of red wine (a fruity one like Merlot or Shiraz works well)

1 orange, sliced

2 cinnamon sticks

4 cloves

3 star anise

2 tablespoons honey or sugar (adjust to taste)

60ml brandy (optional but adds a nice kick)

A pinch of nutmeg

Fresh cranberries (for garnish)

Method:

Pour the wine into a large saucepan and add the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.

Heat gently, making sure the wine doesn’t boil. You want it to simmer slowly to allow the spices to infuse.

Add the honey or sugar, stirring until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness if necessary.

Stir in the brandy, if using, and a pinch of nutmeg.

Simmer for about 20 minutes, then remove from the heat. Strain out the spices before serving.

Garnish with fresh cranberries or a cinnamon stick in each glass.

Pro tip: If you’re making mulled wine for a gathering, use a slow cooker to keep it warm throughout the evening.

2. Eggnog

Eggnog is a rich, creamy drink traditionally enjoyed during Christmas. Its comforting, velvety texture and the gentle warmth of nutmeg make it a festive favourite. While it’s more commonly associated with the US, it’s gaining popularity in the UK as well.

Ingredients:

500ml whole milk

250ml double cream

3 large eggs

100g caster sugar

100ml rum, brandy, or bourbon (optional)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Grated nutmeg (for garnish)

Method:

Whisk the eggs and sugar together in a bowl until light and fluffy.

In a saucepan, gently heat the milk and cream over a low heat until warm (don’t let it boil).

Slowly pour the warm milk mixture into the eggs, whisking continuously to avoid scrambling the eggs.

Return the mixture to the pan and heat gently until it thickens slightly (about 5-7 minutes).

Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and alcohol, if using.

Chill in the fridge for at least an hour to let the flavours meld.

Serve cold, with a sprinkle of grated nutmeg on top.

Pro tip: For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the rum or brandy. You can also add a dash of vanilla syrup for extra sweetness.

3. Hot Chocolate with a Festive Twist

Nothing says cosy quite like a steaming mug of hot chocolate. But this isn’t your standard cocoa. We’re elevating it with Christmas spices and a dash of liqueur to bring some festive flair.

Ingredients:

500ml whole milk

100g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), chopped

1 tablespoon cocoa powder

1 tablespoon sugar (optional)

1 cinnamon stick

1 star anise

50ml Baileys, Amaretto, or spiced rum (optional)

Whipped cream and marshmallows (for topping)

Grated chocolate or a pinch of ground cinnamon (for garnish)

Method:

Heat the milk in a saucepan over low heat, then add the cinnamon stick and star anise to infuse the milk with festive flavours.

Once the milk is warm, remove the spices and stir in the chopped chocolate and cocoa powder until melted and smooth.

Add sugar to taste, if desired, and continue to stir until the hot chocolate is thick and creamy.

Remove from the heat and stir in your choice of liqueur, if using.

Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream, marshmallows, and a sprinkle of grated chocolate or cinnamon.

Pro tip: For a dairy-free version, use almond or oat milk, and dark chocolate that doesn’t contain milk solids.

4. Spiced Apple Cider

If you prefer something lighter and non-alcoholic, spiced apple cider is a great choice. This drink is packed with the flavours of cinnamon, cloves, and apples, making it a wonderful alternative to mulled wine.

Ingredients:

1 litre apple juice or cider

1 orange, sliced

2 cinnamon sticks

5 cloves

2 star anise

1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar (optional)

A pinch of ground ginger or allspice

Method:

In a large saucepan, combine the apple juice, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.

Gently simmer over low heat for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the spices to infuse.

Stir in honey or brown sugar if you prefer a sweeter drink, and add a pinch of ginger or allspice for extra warmth.

Strain the spices and orange slices before serving.

Serve warm in mugs, and garnish with a cinnamon stick or star anise.

Pro tip: You can easily spike this drink with a shot of rum or brandy for an adult version.

5. Gingerbread Latte

A gingerbread latte is a warming treat that combines the rich flavours of coffee with the spices of gingerbread – perfect for a festive morning or as a cosy afternoon pick-me-up.

Ingredients:

1 shot of espresso (or strong coffee)

250ml milk (or dairy-free alternative)

1 tablespoon gingerbread syrup (you can buy this or make your own)

A pinch of ground cinnamon and ginger

Whipped cream (optional)

A gingerbread biscuit (for garnish)

Method:

Heat the milk in a saucepan or use a milk frother until steaming.

Add the gingerbread syrup and a pinch of cinnamon and ginger to the milk, stirring to combine.

Pour the espresso into a mug, then add the spiced milk mixture.

Top with whipped cream and garnish with a gingerbread biscuit on the side.

Pro tip: To make your own gingerbread syrup, simmer 100g brown sugar, 100ml water, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon for 5-10 minutes until thickened.

Whether you're hosting a Christmas gathering or simply enjoying a cosy night in by the fire, these festive drinks are sure to warm your heart and lift your spirits. Cheers to a warm and merry Christmas!

How to safely Involve Your Pets in the Christmas Fun

Fun ideas for including your furry or feathered friends in the celebrations, from pet-safe decorations to festive outfits.

The festive season is upon us, and Christmas is a time for joy, laughter, and making memories with loved ones—including our pets!

Whether you have a dog, cat, rabbit, or even a bird, there are plenty of ways to include your furry (or feathered) friends in the celebrations.

Just like us, our pets can enjoy the festive spirit—though with a few adaptations to keep them safe and happy. Here's how you can make Christmas special for your pets.

1. Pet-Safe Decorations

We all love decking the halls, but certain holiday decorations can be dangerous for pets. Here’s how you can ensure your festive decor is pet-friendly:

Choose safe ornaments: Avoid fragile glass baubles and replace them with shatterproof or soft, pet-friendly ones, especially on lower branches where curious pets can easily reach them.

Mind the tinsel and ribbons: Cats, in particular, are drawn to shiny tinsel and dangling ribbons, which can cause intestinal blockages if ingested. Swap them out for safer alternatives like fabric garlands or paper chains.

Battery-operated fairy lights: If your pet loves chewing on cords, consider using battery-operated fairy lights or placing electric cords out of reach. Additionally, citrus-based deterrent sprays can be useful for discouraging nibbling.

Christmas plants: Popular festive plants like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly are toxic to pets. If you can't resist them, keep them well out of reach or opt for realistic faux versions instead.

2. Festive Pet Outfits

Dressing up for Christmas is a fun tradition, and with the right outfit, your pet can join in on the sartorial joy.

Keep it comfortable: Choose outfits made from breathable, stretchy fabrics that won’t restrict movement or overheat your pet. Keep outfits simple, especially for pets who aren’t used to wearing clothing. A festive bandana or Christmas jumper can work wonders!

Start small: If your pet is new to dressing up, ease them into it by starting with smaller accessories like collars with jingle bells or holiday-themed harnesses.

Safety first: Always supervise your pet while they’re wearing an outfit. Check that it fits properly and doesn’t have any small parts that could be chewed or swallowed.

3. DIY Christmas Treats for Pets

Who says Christmas feasts are only for humans? With a little creativity, you can whip up some holiday treats that are safe for your pets to enjoy:

Dog-friendly gingerbread biscuits: Swap out spices like nutmeg, which is toxic to dogs, for pet-safe ingredients like pumpkin or sweet potato puree. Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes like snowmen or stars.

Cat-friendly fishy treats: Try baking simple tuna or salmon treats using pet-safe recipes. Your feline friend will love a festive fishy snack.

Small pet nibbles: If you have a rabbit, guinea pig, or hamster, you can make treats from hay, vegetables, and pet-safe herbs like parsley and coriander. Shape them into festive bites for a fun twist.

4. Include Your Pet in Christmas Photos

Make memories that will last a lifetime by involving your pets in your family Christmas photos. Whether they’re dressed up in their festive gear or simply lounging by the tree, pets add extra charm to holiday snapshots.

Use props: Incorporate pet-sized Christmas props like mini stockings, hats, or a decorated basket for smaller pets.

Natural poses: Don’t force your pet into a pose they’re not comfortable with. The best photos often come from capturing natural, relaxed moments, especially when they're playing or interacting with family members.

5. Gift Your Pet Their Own Stocking

There’s no reason your pet should miss out on the excitement of gift-giving. Create a stocking filled with pet-friendly goodies for them to enjoy on Christmas morning.

Toys: Whether it’s a festive squeaky toy for dogs or a new feather wand for cats, stocking up on new playthings is always a hit.

Healthy treats: Add some pet-safe holiday treats to their stocking. Just make sure they're healthy and avoid high-sugar snacks.

Pet puzzles: Puzzle toys are a great way to stimulate your pet mentally. They’ll enjoy solving the puzzle to get a tasty reward!

6. Plan a Pet-Friendly Christmas Activity

The festive season is the perfect time to bond with your pet through activities that both you and your animal will enjoy.

Go for a winter walk: If you have a dog, wrap up warm and take a scenic walk to enjoy the winter wonderland. Bring a festive-themed toy or ball to make it extra fun!

Create a cosy pet space: For smaller pets, set up a festive hideaway with soft blankets and a few of their favourite toys. Your pet will love having a cosy spot to retreat to during the hustle and bustle of Christmas Day.

Play interactive games: Cats love interactive games, especially those that mimic hunting behaviours. Use holiday-themed laser pointers or feathers to get them pouncing around with joy.

7. Pet Safety During the Festivities

While it’s tempting to spoil our pets during the festive season, it’s important to keep their safety and well-being in mind.

Keep Christmas dinner out of reach: Many traditional Christmas foods—like chocolate, stuffing, onions, and cooked bones—are harmful to pets. Make sure they stick to their regular diet or pet-safe treats to avoid any digestive issues.

Quiet retreat space: The festive season can be overwhelming with new people, sounds, and activities. Create a calm, quiet area where your pet can retreat to if they feel stressed.

Including your pet in the Christmas fun is a fantastic way to make lasting memories. With a little preparation, you can ensure your pets enjoy the holidays as much as you do—safely, comfortably, and with plenty of festive cheer. From pet-safe decorations to cosy outfits and tasty treats, the Christmas season can be a wonderful time for everyone in the family, including your four-legged (or feathered) friends!

Eco-Friendly Christmas: Sustainable Gift Ideas and Decorations

Christmas is a magical time of year, filled with joy, togetherness, and, of course, gift-giving. However, it’s also a season that can contribute to a significant amount of waste.

From excessive packaging and single-use decorations to unwanted gifts, the environmental impact of the festive season can be overwhelming.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. With a bit of thought and creativity, you can enjoy an eco-friendly Christmas that’s just as special, while being kind to the planet.

Here's a guide to having an environmentally conscious Christmas with sustainable gift ideas, wrapping solutions, and decorations.

1. Sustainable Gift Ideas

The essence of Christmas gifting is about showing thoughtfulness, and what better way to do that than by choosing sustainable presents? Here are a few ideas that are both eco-friendly and meaningful:

a) Gifts of Experience

Instead of giving material items, why not gift experiences? Whether it’s a voucher for a cooking class, tickets to a local theatre, or a weekend getaway, experience-based gifts are memorable and don’t come with unnecessary packaging. They’re perfect for people who value experiences over possessions and are an excellent way to reduce waste.

b) Upcycled and Handmade Gifts

Handmade and upcycled gifts carry a personal touch and often have a much lower environmental impact than mass-produced items. Consider supporting local artisans by purchasing handmade goods, or get creative and make your own presents. Upcycling old materials into new treasures – such as turning vintage fabrics into bags or using scrap wood for bespoke home décor – adds charm and uniqueness to your gift.

c) Eco-Friendly Products

If you prefer to give physical gifts, opt for eco-friendly products. Items made from sustainable materials, such as bamboo, organic cotton, or recycled plastics, are a great choice. Look for ethical brands that focus on reducing their environmental footprint, whether it’s through fair trade practices, cruelty-free certifications, or plastic-free packaging. Popular eco-gift ideas include reusable water bottles, beeswax wraps, natural skincare products, and zero-waste kits.

d) Plants and Seeds

For a gift that keeps on giving, consider plants or seed kits. Indoor plants can brighten up a home and improve air quality, while garden seeds encourage recipients to cultivate their own produce or flowers, promoting a connection with nature. Plus, these gifts are completely biodegradable, reducing waste.

2. Eco-Friendly Wrapping Solutions

Every year, millions of rolls of wrapping paper are discarded after Christmas, many of which can’t be recycled due to metallic finishes, glitter, or plastic coatings. This year, ditch traditional wrapping paper for eco-friendly alternatives that are both beautiful and sustainable:

a) Furoshiki (Fabric Wrapping)

Furoshiki, the Japanese art of fabric wrapping, is a fantastic way to present gifts without the waste. You can use scarves, cloth napkins, or any fabric you have on hand to wrap presents in a way that’s both elegant and reusable. After the gift is unwrapped, the fabric can be used again, or even kept as part of the gift.

b) Recycled and Recyclable Wrapping Paper

If you prefer to stick to paper wrapping, choose recycled or brown kraft paper. These papers are fully recyclable and can be decorated with twine, dried flowers, or stamps for a rustic, personal touch. Be sure to avoid glitter or tape, which make wrapping paper difficult to recycle.

c) Reusables – Jars, Baskets, and Boxes

Why not present your gifts in something that can be reused? Mason jars, wicker baskets, or wooden boxes not only make for creative and practical packaging but can be reused by the recipient for storage, display, or other purposes long after Christmas is over.

d) Natural Embellishments

Skip the plastic bows and ribbons in favour of natural embellishments. Pine cones, sprigs of holly, dried orange slices, or cinnamon sticks add a festive feel to your wrapping and are completely compostable. Not only do these natural elements look beautiful, but they also smell wonderful, adding an extra sensory dimension to your gift presentation.

3. Sustainable Decorations

Decorating for Christmas is one of the highlights of the season, but many of the plastic-based, mass-produced decorations on the market can’t be recycled and often end up in landfill. This year, embrace more eco-friendly options for decking the halls:

a) Natural Christmas Trees

When it comes to choosing a Christmas tree, opt for a real tree from a local, sustainable farm, or better yet, rent a living tree that can be replanted after the holiday season. If you already have an artificial tree, continue using it for as long as possible, as its environmental impact decreases the longer it’s used.

b) DIY and Upcycled Decorations

Making your own decorations is not only fun but a great way to upcycle materials. You can create charming tree ornaments using old fabric, scrap wood, or even dried fruit. Paper snowflakes, salt dough stars, or wooden garlands can bring a touch of homemade magic to your holiday décor without the environmental cost of plastic ornaments.

c) Natural Décor

Incorporate nature into your Christmas decorations by using elements like pine branches, eucalyptus, berries, and dried flowers. These can be arranged into wreaths, centrepieces, or garlands and can be composted after Christmas. For added eco-flair, make your own garlands out of popcorn, cranberries, or orange slices.

d) Solar-Powered or LED Lights

Christmas lights can be energy-intensive, but by choosing LED or solar-powered options, you’ll reduce your energy consumption. LEDs use up to 80% less energy than traditional lights, and solar-powered options don’t need to be plugged in at all, making them both energy-efficient and easy to use outdoors.

4. Mindful Celebrations

An eco-friendly Christmas isn’t just about what you buy – it’s about how you celebrate. Be mindful of food waste by planning meals carefully and using leftovers creatively. Choose plant-based options where possible, as they have a lower carbon footprint than meat. And when it comes to gifting, consider giving less but choosing more meaningful presents.

Having a sustainable Christmas is about making thoughtful choices that minimise your impact on the environment while still embracing the joy and warmth of the season. By opting for eco-friendly gifts, wrapping, and decorations, you’ll not only reduce waste but also set a positive example for others.

This year, make the festive season a little greener, and celebrate with a clear conscience, knowing you’re helping to protect the planet for future Christmases to come.

Why You Should Visit Real Farm Shops for Your Christmas Food and Gifting Needs

As the festive season approaches, many of us start thinking about the delights of Christmas – from the joyful gatherings with loved ones to the delicious meals and thoughtful gifts exchanged.

While it’s tempting to pop into a big supermarket or shop online, there’s a growing trend that’s worth embracing: visiting real farm shops for your Christmas food and gifting needs.

Not only do farm shops offer a unique and personal touch, but they also provide numerous other benefits that can elevate your festive experience.

Here’s why you should consider making a trip to your local farm shop this Christmas.

1. Fresh, Local Produce

Farm shops are a treasure trove of fresh, locally sourced food. Instead of mass-produced items that have travelled miles to reach your plate, farm shops offer seasonal produce that’s often grown or raised just around the corner. From succulent meats to crisp vegetables and hand-picked fruits, you’ll be able to create a Christmas feast that’s fresher, tastier, and more wholesome.

Choosing local also means you’re supporting sustainable farming practices. Many farm shops operate with a strong focus on the environment, offering organic or free-range options. This means your Christmas dinner can be as eco-friendly as it is delicious, with the added benefit of fewer food miles and a smaller carbon footprint.

2. Quality, Artisanal Products

Beyond just fresh fruit and veg, farm shops are known for stocking a wide range of high-quality, artisanal products. Imagine indulgent homemade jams, chutneys, and cheeses, or freshly baked breads and pastries – all perfect for a festive spread. These carefully crafted goods often surpass what you’d find in supermarkets, and their unique flavours can add something special to your Christmas table.

Farm shops are also the place to discover independent, small-batch producers who pour their heart into creating everything from charcuterie to hand-made chocolates. The care and craftsmanship that go into these items ensure they’re a cut above the rest, making your Christmas food even more memorable.

3. Thoughtful, Unique Gifts

If you’re struggling to find the perfect gift, farm shops can be a wonderful solution. Many offer hampers filled with local goodies that make ideal presents for friends and family. Whether it’s a selection of local cheeses, a bottle of farm-pressed cider, or a basket of gourmet treats, these gifts have a personal and thoughtful touch that mass-produced items often lack.

You can also find handmade crafts, skincare products, and even home décor items in many farm shops, providing you with a unique and diverse range of Christmas gift options. Shopping at a farm shop allows you to support small businesses while finding one-of-a-kind presents that show you’ve put real thought into your gifting.

4. Support Local Farmers and Artisans

When you choose to shop at a farm shop, you’re directly supporting local farmers, growers, and artisans. In an age where many small businesses struggle to compete with large corporations, your spending makes a significant difference. The money you spend stays within the community, helping local families and businesses to thrive.

By supporting local agriculture, you’re also helping to preserve British countryside traditions. Many farm shops operate on family-run farms that have been in the community for generations. Your patronage ensures these traditions continue and that future generations can enjoy the same quality produce and crafts.

5. A Personal, Welcoming Shopping Experience

Let’s face it – the hustle and bustle of high street shopping can be stressful, especially during the Christmas rush. Farm shops offer a refreshing alternative with their relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are often the farmers themselves, who are passionate about their products and happy to offer recommendations or share stories about how the food is produced.

In a farm shop, shopping feels more personal. You’re not just another face in the crowd; you’re a valued customer supporting a local business. The festive charm of a beautifully decorated farm shop, combined with the friendly service, makes the whole experience more enjoyable.

6. Reduce Waste with Sustainable Options

Farm shops often focus on reducing waste, offering loose produce and encouraging customers to bring their own bags or containers. This is especially important during the Christmas season, when packaging waste can skyrocket. By opting for reusable packaging and buying only what you need, you can make your Christmas more sustainable.

Many farm shops also offer upcycled or eco-friendly gift items, perfect for those who want to give meaningful presents with a low environmental impact. Choosing these options allows you to align your Christmas with your values and reduce the holiday’s environmental footprint.

This Christmas, consider taking a break from the supermarket aisles and visit your local farm shop. From fresh, local produce to unique, thoughtful gifts, farm shops offer a distinctive and rewarding experience that goes beyond convenience. You’ll not only treat your loved ones to quality food and gifts, but you’ll also support local businesses and enjoy a more sustainable festive season.

Make your Christmas truly special this year by embracing the charm and quality of real farm shops. You might just find it’s a tradition you’ll want to continue for years to come.

Why You Should Shop in Charity Shops for New or Used Goods (and Buy Charity Shop Gift Cards)

In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, affordability, and community engagement, charity shops offer a unique opportunity to meet all these goals in one place.

These shops, often brimming with both new and pre-loved goods, are treasure troves for the savvy shopper.

While the idea of purchasing second-hand items might once have been viewed as less appealing, the tide has turned, and charity shopping has become both fashionable and practical.

Here’s why you should consider browsing through charity shops for your next find—and even picking up a charity shop gift card as a thoughtful present for others.

1. Sustainability and Eco-Friendliness

In today’s climate-conscious society, the importance of reducing waste cannot be overstated. Charity shops offer a brilliant way to reduce the demand for new items, encouraging the reuse and repurposing of goods. Whether it’s clothes, furniture, or homeware, buying second-hand reduces the carbon footprint associated with the production and transportation of new products.

By opting to shop in a charity shop, you’re directly helping to combat the throwaway culture. Instead of contributing to landfill waste, you’re giving items a second life. Every pre-loved item you purchase is one less product that needs to be manufactured anew, making your choices better for the environment.

2. Affordable Prices

Let’s face it: life can be expensive, and shopping in high street stores doesn’t always fit within everyone’s budget. Charity shops offer an affordable alternative. You can find high-quality, sometimes even brand-new, items at a fraction of the price you’d pay elsewhere. Whether you’re a student, someone looking for unique finds, or just trying to save a few pounds, charity shops are a budget-friendly option that doesn’t compromise on quality.

Moreover, with the rise of fast fashion, many items donated to charity shops are barely worn, sometimes still with tags. This means you can find stylish, high-quality clothing for a steal, all while supporting a good cause.

3. Unique Finds and Vintage Treasures

One of the greatest joys of shopping in charity shops is the chance to find something truly unique. Unlike shopping in chain stores where thousands of the same items are mass-produced, charity shops offer one-of-a-kind pieces, whether that’s a vintage dress, an antique piece of furniture, or an out-of-print book.

These shops are havens for those who enjoy a good rummage, never knowing what hidden gems they might uncover. Whether you’re a fan of retro fashion, looking to furnish your home with characterful pieces, or seeking a quirky gift, charity shops are perfect for finding items with history and personality.

4. Supporting Good Causes

Every time you make a purchase in a charity shop, you’re doing more than just buying an item—you’re supporting a cause. Charity shops are run to raise funds for charitable organisations, meaning that the money you spend goes directly to helping others, whether that’s funding medical research, supporting people in need, or protecting the environment.

By shopping in charity shops, you can feel good knowing that your money is making a positive difference. It’s an easy and fulfilling way to contribute to your community while getting something for yourself at the same time.

5. A More Thoughtful Gift Option: Charity Shop Gift Cards

If you’re struggling to find the perfect gift for someone, why not consider a charity shop gift card? It’s a thoughtful and meaningful option, showing that you care about both the recipient and the greater good. A charity shop gift card allows the recipient to choose something they truly want or need, while also contributing to a worthy cause.

This is a particularly appealing option for those who prefer sustainable, eco-conscious gifts, as well as for friends and family who love to shop for unique, one-of-a-kind items. It’s a gift that’s not only personal and flexible but also socially responsible.

6. Encouraging Mindful Consumption

In a world of overconsumption, charity shopping encourages a more mindful approach to buying. Instead of impulse purchases from fast fashion outlets or disposable homeware stores, charity shops promote thoughtful, intentional shopping. When you’re buying second-hand or upcycled items, you’re more likely to cherish and appreciate them, knowing they come with a backstory.

This mindful consumption also fosters a sense of community. Charity shops are often local hubs, and by shopping there, you’re helping to support local initiatives and engage with your community in a meaningful way.

Final Thoughts: The Power of Charity Shops

Shopping in charity shops isn’t just about saving money or finding a great deal—it’s about making a positive impact. From promoting sustainability to supporting charitable causes, buying both new and used goods in charity shops offers numerous benefits that extend far beyond your personal gain. Whether you’re hunting for hidden treasures or simply want to spend your money more wisely, charity shops provide a unique shopping experience that’s good for your wallet, your conscience, and the planet.

And don’t forget—if you’re unsure what to buy someone, a charity shop gift card is a brilliant way to introduce them to the world of ethical shopping while supporting a good cause. Happy hunting!

Rise of the ‘Deals Shopper’ Breathing Life into British High Streets for this Christmas

The most recent research by Lightspeed Commerce Inc., which is the one-stop commerce platform empowering merchants to provide the best omnichannel experiences, reveals that the high street could see a boost later this year, in the pre-Christmas period, with nearly eight in 10 of us (79%) surveyed shop in person and four in 10 are looking to increase how much they hit the high street shops this Christmas.

Lightspeed’s study captures the nation's feelings on the costs of products rising in the past few years, with 77% of respondents saying they believe rising prices for retailers, including energy bills and rent, are the main reasons behind increased prices. Over half (51%) of those surveyed didn't believe these price hikes were fair.

To counteract these rising costs, shoppers are adopting cost-saving measures like taking "2 for 1" deals (51%), changing their preferred retailers to find lower prices (39%), shopping less frequently than last year (38%), only shopping during sales periods (24%), and asking others what they want for Christmas and birthdays to avoid wasting their money (24%).

Apparently the most optimistic age group of the nation, almost a quarter (24%) of Gen Zers are spending more money now than they did a year ago, with 28% saying they make more impulsive purchases, thanks to social media, and nearly one third (32%) of Gen Z shoppers now shopping exclusively during sale periods to get the best deals they could.

#TikTokmademebuyit reigns true as it is the platform with the biggest influence in social purchases amongst this age group (59%), followed by Instagram (53%) and Facebook (24%), but despite this age group being the least likely to shop in store, 33% will be influenced by what they see on social media and subsequently head to the high street to find the item they’ve seen on their social media channels.

Adopting pre-loved items

Despite 62% of those surveyed saying they've never previously shopped in store for pre-loved or reconditioned items, almost half of respondents (46%) stated they were planning to consider the ethical and sustainable origins of a product before buying something new.

With under 45s being the most inclined to buy reconditioned or pre-loved items, the primary reason for doing so is less ethically driven and more to do with the impact on their own pocket.

Cost-effectiveness (61%) is seen as the top motivator followed by environmental concerns (35%), old items being seen as better quality than new items (29%), recurring fashion trends that have come round again (20%) and opposing fast fashion (19%).

How people feel about AI when they shop

When it comes to the use of AI during the shopping experience, the nation is currently split on how comfortable they feel about AI, with 32% stating they are somewhat comfortable to very comfortable with AI being part of the shopping experience and 35% saying they feel somewhat uncomfortable to very uncomfortable with it.

When asked about people’s direct experience with AI whilst shopping, it’s the need for speed that wins shoppers over, with 41% of respondents saying self check-out in more stores would enhance their experience the most.

This is followed by people being more open to AI in stores that delivered personalised discounts to them (39%), personalised suggestions in-store (28%), recipe suggestions based on what’s in their grocery shopping (27%), virtual fitting rooms (26%), make-up shade matching (23%), and changing digital window displays (21%).

The emerging shopper typologies

When respondents were asked what type of shopper they are, a huge 70% identified as a ‘Deals shopper’, meaning they actively seek out deals, discounts and offers to gain bang for the buck, followed by 46% of shoppers stating they are ‘Last minute shoppers’ who like a speedy in store experience with attentive customer service, good stock availability and multiple store locations so they can get what they want, when they want it.

70% of their respondents say they are a ‘Deals Shopper’: I actively look for deals in store and sign up for offers and discounts that offer value for money. I’m less bothered about the in-store shopping experience, it’s all about getting bang for my buck!

46% of their respondents say they are a ‘Last Minute Shopper’: I purchase on the high street and want a speedy in store experience with attentive customer service, and I expect good stock availability and multiple store locations so I can get what I want, when I want.

35% of their respondents say they are a ‘Personal Shopper’: I like to schedule a shopping trip. I expect good customer service and I’m open to stores using AI to enhance my shopping experience, so it feels like it’s more personal to me. I buy into a brand and want to receive offers and in store experiences that are tailored to me.

32% of their respondents say they are a ‘Fair Share Shopper’: I actively search out second-hand pre-loved shopping experiences, and I value the ethical and sustainability of a brand and the items they stock. I expect sustainable materials to be used in packaging.

17% of their respondents say they are a ‘Social First Shopper’: I buy things ‘on trend’ and get inspiration from social media and then I might buy in store so I can experience it hands on before purchasing.

Says Liam Crooks, MD of EMEA at Lightspeed: “It’s encouraging for retail businesses to hear people are looking to shop in store in the second half of 2024, and even more illuminating to know they can make strides in converting business by taking steps to look at what ‘makes’ the shopper experience. From simple and easier AI powered tech, to personalised deals and offers to show they really know their customer, and understanding the motivations around ethical purchases, retail in the UK can once again thrive.”
