UK Money Bloggers have a unique idea for Christmas gifting this year which will help children

Not everybody is easy to buy for, and every year, a large number of unwanted gifts are wasted and can even end up discarded and end up in landfills.

Also, the cost of living crisis continues to grip the nation’s wallets, so many will be looking for ways to avoid wasting money.

UK Money Bloggers (a network of over 400 personal finance influencers and part of the Smart Money People Group), working with children's charity KidsOut, is encouraging friends, family and colleagues to ‘give’ instead of ‘gift’ this Christmas, as the more socially conscious and environmentally friendly option. KidsOut provides Christmas presents for disadvantaged children in women’s refuges, who otherwise wouldn't receive any gifts for Christmas.

UK Money Bloggers conducted research among UK workers and found that through workplace Secret Santa festivities alone, £60m worth of gifts are wasted every year. Other findings include:

A third (33%) of UK workers will participate in workplace Secret Santa this year, but 30% would prefer not to take part, and 36% will give away the gift they receive.

Almost three-quarters (72%) of UK workers participating in Secret Santa would like to see changes this year due to the rising cost of living, including setting a smaller limit for donations (31%) and preferring to give to charity (22%). Based on last year’s Secret Santa budgets, this could mean an extra £37m in the pockets of UK charities.

Ideal as a Secret Santa alternative, a stocking filler, or as a main present for someone who is difficult to buy for, deciding to ‘give’ instead of ‘gift’ could make this Christmas special for others more in need.

Founder of UK Money Bloggers, Andy Webb said: “Buying and receiving Secret Santa presents that end up being unwanted can be an awkward and wasteful experience. Giving to charity instead of gifting presents is the ideal way to make a positive impact with your money instead this Christmas.”

A Cracking Tradition: The Fascinating History of Christmas Crackers

Every year, as Christmas approaches, households around the world gather around the dinner table, adorned with festive decorations and a lavish spread of food. Among the traditional elements of the Christmas season, the Christmas cracker holds a special place.

But have you ever wondered about the origins and history of these festive popping novelties? In this blog post, we'll take a deep dive into the history of Christmas crackers and discover how they became an integral part of the holiday season.

The Birth of a Tradition

Christmas crackers, often simply called "crackers," were first invented in the early 19th century by a London confectioner named Tom Smith. The story goes that Smith was inspired by the French bonbon, a sweet wrapped in a twist of paper. However, the early crackers were not the delightful, explosive novelties we know today. Instead, they contained sweets and small trinkets, but they lacked the characteristic "crack" that makes modern crackers so exciting.

The Crackling Innovation

Tom Smith's breakthrough came during a trip to Paris in 1840, where he witnessed the French custom of wrapping sweets in twisted paper. The idea of incorporating a bang and a small gift into the cracker was sparked by the sound of a log crackling in the fireplace. Upon returning to London, Smith began experimenting with different designs until he finally achieved the desired effect. In 1847, he patented the concept of a cracker that produced a "pop" or "crack" when pulled apart, thanks to a small explosive charge known as a "snap."

The tradition quickly caught on, and Tom Smith's Christmas crackers became a sensation. His sons, Walter and Henry, took over the family business and expanded its production, incorporating new designs and styles to cater to different tastes and budgets. By the late 19th century, Christmas crackers were a staple in many British households.

Cracker Contents

The contents of Christmas crackers have evolved over the years. Originally, they contained sweets and small toys, but as their popularity grew, more elaborate and valuable items were included. These ranged from miniature puzzles and games to jewellery and even tiny tools. Today, it's common to find a paper crown or hat, a joke or riddle, and a small gift or trinket in a typical Christmas cracker.

Christmas Crackers Around the World

While Christmas crackers have a strong association with British Christmas traditions, they have spread to many other parts of the world. In the United States, Canada, and other countries, they are often used as part of festive holiday gatherings, parties, and dinners. Each region may have its unique spin on what goes inside the cracker or the types of jokes and toys included.

Conclusion

Christmas crackers have come a long way from their humble beginnings as a simple sweet wrapped in paper. Thanks to the inventive spirit of Tom Smith and his family, these festive novelties have become an integral part of Christmas celebrations for millions of people around the world. As you gather around the table this holiday season and pull open your Christmas crackers, take a moment to appreciate the history and tradition that has made them a cherished part of the holiday season for well over a century.

Incidentally the Tom Smith company is still producing high quality Christmas crackers today and they hold the Royal Warrant to supply Christmas crackers and Christmas wrapping paper to the Royal family.

"The Joy of Local: Five Reasons to Buy Locally for Christmas"

As Chirstmas approaches, we all embark on the annual quest to find the perfect gifts for our loved ones.

While online shopping and superstores offer convenience and a wide array of options, there's something truly special about buying locally for Christmas.

It's a choice that benefits not only your recipients but also your community. In this blog post, we'll explore five compelling reasons to consider supporting local businesses when shopping for gifts this holiday season.

Unique and Thoughtful Gifts:

When you buy locally, you're more likely to discover one-of-a-kind, handcrafted treasures that you won't find in larger retail chains. Local artisans and small businesses take pride in their work and often create personalized, thoughtful gifts.

These unique items have a story and character that can't be replicated by mass-produced products. By choosing local, you can find gifts that truly resonate with the recipient, making your presents even more special.

Support Local Economies:

Local businesses are the backbone of your community. When you buy from them, you're directly contributing to the local economy, helping to create jobs and stimulate economic growth. These businesses are owned by your neighbours and friends, and your support keeps their livelihoods intact. By choosing to buy locally, you're investing in the prosperity of your community, making it a better place for everyone.

Environmental Benefits:

One of the less obvious advantages of shopping locally is the positive impact on the environment. Local businesses often source their products and materials from nearby suppliers, reducing the need for long-distance transportation. This means fewer carbon emissions and a smaller ecological footprint, making your holiday shopping more environmentally friendly.

Personalised Service:

Local shops and artisans offer a level of personalised service that you won't find in superstores or online retailers. Shop owners and artisans are often more invested in their customers' satisfaction and can offer advice and assistance that's tailored to your needs. They can help you find the perfect gift, wrap it beautifully, and may even remember you and your preferences the next time you visit.

Strengthening Community Bonds:

Buying locally isn't just about transactions; it's also about building a sense of community. When you shop locally, you foster stronger connections with your neighbours and local business owners. This sense of belonging and interconnectedness is especially important during the Christmas season, as it promotes goodwill, trust, and a shared spirit of celebration.

This Christmas, let's make a conscious effort to shop locally and experience the magic of the season in a different way. By choosing local businesses, you can find unique and thoughtful gifts, support your community's economy, reduce your environmental impact, enjoy personalised service, and strengthen the bonds within your community.

These reasons make buying locally for Christmas a decision that benefits everyone involved, making the holiday season a little brighter and more meaningful for all. So, this year, give the gift of local love and watch the joy it brings to your loved ones and your community.

Educational and Fun Christmas Gifts for Children: The Perfect Balance

Christmastime is a time of joy and wonder, especially for children. Christmas is a magical time when children eagerly anticipate unwrapping their presents.

While the excitement of toys and gadgets is undeniable, it's also an excellent opportunity to choose gifts that can entertain and educate simultaneously. In this blog post, we'll explore a selection of educational and fun Christmas gifts for children that strike the perfect balance between learning and play.

Educational Board Games

Board games are a fantastic way to engage children in learning while having fun. Games like Scrabble, Monopoly, and Settlers of Catan teach valuable skills such as vocabulary, math, and strategy. There are also many educational board games designed specifically for young learners, covering topics like geography, history, and science. These games encourage critical thinking and social interaction, making them a perfect choice for family game nights during the holidays.

Building and Construction Sets

Building and construction sets, such as LEGO, K'Nex, and Magna-Tiles, offer a unique blend of creativity and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. These sets allow children to explore their imagination while developing spatial awareness and problem-solving skills. From constructing buildings to designing vehicles, these kits inspire young minds to think critically and innovatively.

Science Kits

Science kits provide a hands-on learning experience that can spark a child's curiosity about the world around them. Kits that focus on topics like chemistry, astronomy, or geology are not only entertaining but also educational. Children can conduct experiments and discover scientific principles, encouraging an interest in the STEM fields from an early age.

Educational Apps and Software

In today's digital age, educational apps and software can be excellent tools for learning and having fun. There are countless apps and programs designed to teach children a wide range of subjects, from language arts to coding. Look for apps that incorporate gamification to make learning enjoyable and interactive. Many of these apps feature colourful graphics, engaging challenges, and rewards to keep children motivated.

Art Supplies

Creativity is a crucial aspect of a child's development. Art supplies like crayons, coloured pencils, markers, and craft kits allow children to express themselves while enhancing their fine motor skills and creativity. Encourage your child's artistic endeavours by gifting them high-quality art materials and inspiring them to create masterpieces during the Christmas break.

Books

Books are timeless gifts that provide a gateway to knowledge and imagination. Whether it's picture books for young readers or engaging chapter books for older children, a well-chosen book can ignite a passion for reading and learning. Consider gifting a series of educational books related to a child's interests, such as science, history, or adventure.

Educational Puzzles

Puzzles come in various forms, from jigsaw puzzles to brain-teasers. They enhance problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, and cognitive development. Educational puzzles may focus on geography, mathematics, or even famous works of art. These not only entertain but also challenge a child's intellect in an enjoyable way.

This Christmas, while you enjoy the festivities and exchange gifts, consider selecting presents that offer both fun and educational value for the children in your life. By striking a balance between learning and play, you can help foster a love for knowledge and creativity, setting them on a path of continuous growth and exploration. These gifts will not only bring joy during the holiday season but will also contribute to a child's overall development in the long run.
