Merry Christmas for visitors to Father Christmas in Shrewsbury museum workshop

The elves at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery are busy helping Father Christmas and his workshop.

The festive magic is happening at the Shropshire Council-run venue, where bookings are now being taken for visitors to meet Father Christmas in his traditional museum workshop.

People are invited to follow the special flagstones, through the tree-lined shut and enchanted stone archway, and up the original sweeping staircase.

Children are welcome to post a letter to Father Christmas in the special festive post office, and a cheerful elf guide will lead the tour through to a wonderous workshop, crammed full of history and magic, to meet Father Christmas himself.

Rob Gittins, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture and digital, said:- “Father Christmas must know we have all been very, very good to ask us to let him set up a workshop in the museum in Shrewsbury.

“It's very exciting he and the elves are going to be with us right up to 23 December when he will be preparing for the busiest day of his year, and I’m sure they'll be given a warm welcome from our museum team and by all the visitors who book to come along.

“As well as experiencing our lovely museum guests at Father Christmas’ workshop, you will be able to enjoy some Christmas themed arts and crafts at stations scattered around the museum; and Father Christmas has also promised a gift for every child who comes to see him.”

Tickets cost £15 per child aged 1–17, and £5 per accompanying adult, and can be booked here https://tinyurl.com/365ev2m6.

Parents or guardians should be aware that time slots are bookable for mornings, afternoons and early evenings during late night shopping on Wednesdays. Friday afternoons, and all day on Saturdays and Sundays, through to Friday 23 December 2022. Tickets are non-refundable, and late arrivals can't be guaranteed to meet Father Christmas.

Have you seen Lidl Bear yet?

Lidl GB's Christmas adverts are featuring Lidl Bear, this year’s most unlikely Christmas celebrity. But this adorable yet expressionless bear is like no other Christmas character, and it absolutely won’t be on sale in Lidl.

Lidl Bear’s story begins when a dad accidentally shrinks his Lidl jumper in the wash, and his young daughter has the ingenious idea of putting it on her teddy bear.

And, just like that, a star is born – finding fame in the aisles of Lidl before becoming the (expressionless) face of Lidl’s advertising campaign and experiencing the highs and lows of fame at Christmas time.

As the world around Lidl Bear goes crazy in its endeavours to make a little stuffed toy a celebrity, we ask ourselves: will Lidl Bear make it back home for Christmas with its family?

Claire Farrant, Marketing Director at Lidl GB, said: “What stands Lidl Bear apart from other Christmas characters is its hilarious, deadpan expression. By displaying no emotion it manages to create humour and deliver our message about what’s actually important this Christmas.

“You also won’t be seeing Lidl Bear for sale in any of our stores – because, in the face of unrealistic Christmas expectations and pressure, we know what really matters is being with the people we care about.”

In fact, rather than selling the character, Lidl Bear has instead been the inspiration for Lidl’s Christmas charitable drive - helping to ensure every child experiences the joy of a beloved toy this Christmas. Lidl Bear’s Toy Bank is a nationwide donation initiative, giving new or unwrapped toys and games to children across the UK through the Neighbourly community network.

Peter de Roos, Chief Commercial Officer at Lidl GB, says of the campaign: “Instead of selling Lidl Bear, we’re asking everyone who can to spare a bear, and other toys, to give to those in need this Christmas. From Kevin to Percy and everything inbetween, all toys will be welcomed with open arms – because there’s room for everyone at the table this Christmas.”

Customers can drop off new and unopened toys and games, to be gifted to children that need support in their local area. Donations can be anything - from a small stocking filler to something bigger. Sought-after items include toys, games, books, puzzles, and arts and crafts, for a range of ages.

In addition, the supermarket has committed £250k for charities during the festive period – including a £125k donation for the toy bank initiative – and has also pledged to donate more meals than ever over the festive period. As part of the supermarket’s long-standing work within local communities, Lidl GB will also donate a selection of festive food items as part of its regular food donations. These will go to local charities and community groups, which - together with their food surplus programme - will equate to over 1 million meals.

Aldi's biggest Christmas ever as it's set to sell nearly 50 million mince pies

Aldi is set to sell nearly 50 million mince pies this Christmas as millions of shoppers flock to its stores amid the growing cost-of-living crisis.

The supermarket predicts it will also sell over 38 million pigs in blankets this festive season, in what will be Aldi’s biggest Christmas ever.

Giles Hurley, CEO, Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Shoppers have started to think about Christmas even earlier this year.

“While it’s a wonderful time where families come together, there's no doubt many households are having to plan their spending over the festive period much more carefully, and many of those households are realising Aldi is the only place to shop for an amazing Christmas at an affordable price.

“The price gap between Aldi and the traditional, full price supermarkets is only widening, and millions of shoppers are switching to Aldi as a result of this.

“Our unbreakable promise to our customers is we will always offer the lowest prices of any supermarket, whether it’s a normal weekly shop or all they need for a fantastic Christmas celebration.”

Recent data from Kantar Worldpanel showed Aldi is the fastest-growing supermarket and 1.5 million new customers shopped at an Aldi store in the 12 weeks to 30th October.

According to consumer champion Which?, the traditional ‘Big Four’ supermarkets, Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury’s, are 16% more expensive than Aldi on a basket of 48 everyday grocery items.

Earlier this week Aldi also announced its plans to support local charities, foodbanks, and community groups across the UK this Christmas through its Emergency Winter Foodbank Fund.

The supermarket is donating £250,000 (that's a quarter of a million!) to help organisations as they prepare to face heightened demand upon their services and will also be introducing new signage in stores to help highlight to customers the most in demand items at foodbanks, as selected by the organisations themselves.

Aldi has already donated over 27 million meals to good causes since its partnership with Neighbourly began in 2019.

Charities and community groups interested in working with Aldi should contact Neighbourly at aldi@neighbourly.com.

Aldi announces new emergency foodbank fund to help support charities this Christmas

Aldi has issued a pledge to help support local charities, foodbanks, and community groups across the UK via its newly launched Emergency Winter Foodbank Fund this Christmas.

The supermarket’s Emergency Winter Foodbank Fund will see Aldi donate £250,000 to help organisations as they prepare to face heightened demand on their services this Christmas.

The fund is building on Aldi’s successful partnership with community engagement platform Neighbourly which enables all Aldi’s 980 UK stores to donate surplus food seven days a week, all year round.

Aldi will also be introducing new signage in stores this Christmas to help highlight to customers the most in demand items at their local foodbanks, as selected by the organisations themselves.

From early December, shoppers looking to donate to foodbanks should watch for the logo on shelves by certain items, like Baked Beans, Teabags and Toiletries, which can then be dropped off at the food donation points which are located near to Aldi’s checkouts.

Liz Fox, Corporate Responsibility Director at Aldi UK, said: “We know Christmas is already a particularly challenging time for many people, but this year is understandably going to be even tougher for lots of households.

“That’s why we’re more committed than ever to doing what we can to give back. We want to make food accessible for all and hope both our additional funding and donation drive will help to make a real difference for people."

Steve Butterworth, CEO of Neighbourly, added: “The cost-of-living is impacting communities up and down the country and the charities we support are expecting to see demand increase even further over the coming months.

“Without the support of the public and businesses such as Aldi we’d be unable to help those in need. Within our network there are many charities and community groups that will be able to put this funding to very good use, to support families that are struggling.”

Aldi’s latest commitment follows a recent survey of Neighbourly charities which revealed 72% will need more food items to help with increased demand this Christmas.

The items revealed to be most in-demand, and will be promoted in-store to help drive donations this Christmas, included cereal, rice and pasta, tinned food and toiletries.

Aldi is further supporting Neighbourly through its Christmas advert this year, by encouraging viewers who are able to help families in need to donate at aldi.co.uk/neighbourly. The supermarket has already donated over 27 million meals to good causes since its partnership with Neighbourly began in 2019.

Charities and community groups interested in working with Aldi should contact Neighbourly at aldi@neighbourly.com.

Christmas pudding banned in some homes as millions of Brits have no plans to serve it this year

The UK’s first ever Christmas pudding café opens today in a bid to ‘pud’ the dessert back on the menu this festive season.

31% of Brits hosting this Christmas have no plans to serve the traditional Christmas pudding, and one in five believe it’s heading for extinction within three years.

It comes as almost half (48%) of 16–26-year-olds say they don’t like it, yet 37% have never even tried it.

Ready for a change, 80% of the nation would love to see the classic dessert given a modern twist.

Opened yesterday Thursday 24th and today Friday 25th November, Sainsbury’s FREE Pud You Dare Café, gives guests the chance to try out modern and traditional versions of the Christmas pudding.

The traditional Christmas pudding could soon become a dessert of the past, as a third of Brits (31%) hosting this Christmas, that's over six million people, don't plan to serve it this Christmas. Once a firm  Christmas staple, the dessert is becoming less and less popular, with one in five claiming they have never tasted one, rising to over a third for Gen Z (37%).

What’s more, new research from Sainsbury’s revealed a further one in five Brits believe the Christmas pudding is heading for extinction and predict it will be gone within three years, on average. The decline comes as a quarter of Brits (36%) claim they dislike the taste.

Preferring more modern flavours, Gen Z heads up the extinction of the traditional pud, as almost half say they don’t like it (48%) and one in five have no plans to ever give it a try. Classic Christmas pudding rituals could also be forgotten within a generation as 57% of 16–26-year-olds didn’t know about flaming a Christmas pudding with brandy, and 70% are unaware it’s traditionally served with a coin. A massive 63% even think the mincemeat contains actual meat.

In a bid to put the pud back on the hot list and show the next generation of hosts what they’re missing out on, Sainsbury’s has opened the ‘Pud You Dare Café' the UK’s first ever café dedicated to the iconic Christmas dessert.

This year, the supermarket revealed its brand-new twist on the classic, the Taste the Difference Caramelised Biscuit Pudding, a delicious take on the traditional, that’s drizzled with spiced caramel sauce and sprinkled with caramelised biscuit crumb. This comes as research reveals salted caramel is among the nation's favourite dessert flavours.

Pud You Dare visitors can enjoy the original and new variation of the Christmas classic for free, as the research revealed a whopping 80% of people agree they’d give it a try if it had a more modern twist.

It’s not just the Christmas pud that will be getting the modern treatment this Christmas. Of the Gen Z-ers hosting Christmas this year, a quarter (27%) plan to serve pizza, 18% are considering serving burgers or pasta, and 17% say they'd serve fish and chips. In fact, 31% say they'll refuse to serve traditional food this year.

Conversely, almost half of baby boomers say they'll firmly refuse to eat anything other than a traditional Christmas dinner, leading to a quarter of Brits admitting they've already disagreed with their families about who'll host this year (26%) as the nation’s Christmas eating habits become generationally split.

Claire Hughes, Director of Product and Innovation at Sainsbury’s said: “Our insights revealed the past three years has seen the biggest shift in flavours favoured by the nation than during any other time. The Christmas pudding has slowly fallen from favour, but many of those who've written it off completely have never even tried it! We hope our café gives them the chance to change their minds.

“Although a Christmas pudding fan myself, I love embracing new flavours and it was lots of fun creating the Taste the Difference Caramelised Biscuit Pudding to appeal to a new generation. We hope that by introducing this modern take on the traditional pudding to our range, the love for this classic can be rekindled once more people have tried it.”

The free ‘Pud You Dare Café’ was open on Thursday 24th November from 12pm – 7pm, and today, Friday 25th November from 11am – 7pm, with Sainsbury’s donating £3 on behalf of each customer to Comic Relief to help tackle food poverty this winter.

Those attending the café can enjoy the Taste the Difference 18 Month Matured Christmas Pudding, alongside the brand-new Taste the Difference Caramelised Biscuit Pudding with a choice of toppings for a personalised pud experience.

The new take on the traditional dessert features a fruity sponge to please every palate but with an innovative twist and a burst of new flavours. Vine fruits laced with a hint of brandy for a boozy hit are combined with a generous drizzle of spiced caramel sauce and caramelised biscuit crumbs to create a delicious fusion of traditional and modern tastes. The Caramelised Biscuit Pudding will also be on offer for £10 from Friday 25th November until Saturday 24th December, along with deals on other Christmas puddings in the Sainsbury’s range.

Giving the Christmas pudding the showstopping moment it deserves, Sainsbury’s launched its 2022 Christmas advert earlier this month, with the new Caramelised Biscuit Pudding taking centre stage. View the full ad here.

Any surplus food will be provided to Sainsbury’s long-term redistribution partner, FareShare, through their London delivery partner The Felix Project. Sainsbury’s and FareShare continue to work together as part of their shared mission to support communities with access to food.

Maximising small spaces this Christmas says Victory Curtains and Blinds

Mirrored baubles on the Christmas tree

Mirrored baubles on the Christmas tree act the same way as mirrors, by reflecting light around the room and making it feel more spacious. You’ll get the same illusion of a bigger room but with more style and Christmas appeal.

Rearrange furniture to create flow

A quick rearrange of your furniture can make a room feel a lot bigger than it is. It’s important you ensure that there is no furniture obstructing walkways or entrances to the room, as this will make the space feel more cramped. Push your sofa against a wall (where possible) and position it towards the window, so your outside view can be enjoyed from the comfort of your seat.

Extend your celebrations into the outdoor space

If the weather is nice, make use of sunny weather and extend your Christmas celebrations outdoors. Awnings are a great addition to your outdoor space as they shield your home from direct sunlight which can heat your home. They’re also a lovely touch when you’re eating outdoors, as they’ll provide the right amount of shade you need to enjoy your meal.

Keep window dressings open (apart from when you’re out the room)

Any room will appear larger if it’s well-lit! There are two options you have when it comes to lighting a room, artificial or natural. Open your window dressings to let the sunshine flood into the room throughout the day. Make sure you shut them slightly when you’re out the house though, as you don’t want anyone peeking through at your lovely Christmas presents.

Have a Christmas tidy-up

Too many unnecessary things can make a room feel small. If you want to squeeze more people into your lounge it might be worth removing any furniture and accessories that are taking up more space than needed, like your pouffe or rug. Top tip: If you can see the floor the room will look and feel larger!

“You can’t park there!” Parking advice for the festive period

Drivers have been urged to check the rules before parking when, shopping or visiting friends and family this Christmas to dodge hefty fines and spoilt festivities.

Experts at LeaseCar.uk have revealed the spots where motorists shouldn't park over the festive period to avoid angry complaints and expensive penalties, which are bound to ruin Christmas for everyone involved.

With lots of visitors to friends and family homes over the festive season, it can be tempting for motorists to park on the pavement, cycle lane or use nearby car parks to stay overnight.

But parking in a new spot can lead to a large bill and angry neighbours if the location isn’t suitable.

Driveways fill up quickly with visiting friends and family over Christmas resulting in large numbers of cars parking on the pavement for those houses with lots of visitors.

While parking on the street might seem like the only option as travellers rush to get inside to the warmth, the experts say that all drivers should check signage to see if there are any restrictions wherever they want to park up.

Other spots such as public car parks can seem like a great place to leave a vehicle overnight but can result in a painful penalty.

Drivers should also stay updated on the Highway Code for the most recent laws and regulations on parking vehicles.

Tim Alcock from LeaseCar.uk said: “This Christmas many of us will either be hosting lots of guests or be driving to friends and families’ homes to visit. And many of us drivers don’t actually know the specific places and regulations on where you can park your car overnight.

“Of course, no one wants to run the risk of parking somewhere which may result in a stolen vehicle, vandalism or an expensive fine, which will doubtless ruin Christmas.

“That’s why it’s important to check where it’s illegal to park your car overnight. Not only that, but spots which aren’t illegal, but will cause major grievances, like parking in front of your neighbour’s driveway, are inconsiderate, especially during the festive period.

“In fact, parking on someone else’s driveway is classed as a civil offence of trespassing so your car could be removed and a fine issued.

“It is also key to ensure that you are not parked anywhere which could be a danger to others - such as cyclists and emergency service vehicle access.”

Here is LeaseCar.uk’s guide to parking over Christmas:

1. Pavements

It’s currently only illegal to park on the pavement in London, and although there have been calls to input this ban across the whole country, it’s up to local councils to enforce double yellow lines and signage to stop drivers from parking on the pavement. It might seem tempting to park on the pavement when visiting someone this Christmas, but always check signage first and completely avoid it in the capital city.

2. Car parks

Before parking, it’s important to check if overnight stays are allowed in certain car parks. If a car park isn’t ticketed it might seem easy to get away with, but parking there overnight is a no go as car parks use ANPR cameras to catch any illegal visitors. If caught, a hefty fine or penalty could be on the way.

3. Taxi rank

It may seem like a good idea for some to park up overnight in an empty taxi rank, but this can actually land drivers a fine, as it is only legal for licensed public taxis to park there. Not only that, but this will mess up the flow of the system over the busy Christmas period and will annoy taxi drivers.

4. In front of a neighbour’s driveway

Parking in front of a neighbour’s driveways has long caused grievances with homeowners all over the country. Not only is it very annoying for the owner of the driveway, but parking out in front blocks access and causes disruptions for Christmas plans which neighbours have. It might seem convenient for guests to park in front of a neighbours driveway, but it should be avoided at all costs.

5. Cycle lanes

Many drivers might think it’s fine to park in a cycle lane overnight, but bike users may still be using the cycle lanes during all hours of the day and night. There are dedicated cycle lanes for a reason: to prevent any accidents with vehicles which are parked, or not. Cyclists will be forced to swerve around parked cars, potentially putting themselves and other road users in danger.

6. On someone’s drive

For those households with a long guest list this Christmas, some drivers might be tempted to park on a neighbour’s driveway to avoid a long walk back to their car. And whilst it is not against the law to actually park on someone else’s drive, the driveway is part of their property so it’s an act of trespassing, which is a civil offence. And could inflame neighbourhood disputes.

7. Check signage

It might be tempting to park overnight on a nearby street when visiting friends and family members for Christmas, but doing so could incur fines if it is illegal to. That’s why it is important to check around signage in parking spots on the street or in car parks - signs will outline any times or days where drivers cannot park up.

8. Don’t prevent emergency service access

This may be obvious to drivers, it’s still worth reiterating that it’s crucial to never park anywhere which could prevent access for ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles. Although this shouldn’t be done at any point throughout the day, parking on a narrow street or somewhere with tight access is especially bad at night-time with significantly less chance for drivers to be able to move their vehicles quickly or legally if they’ve been drinking around the Christmas table.

9. Direction of traffic flow is important

The Highway Code makes it clear that it’s illegal to park vehicles overnight which are facing against the direction of the traffic flow. The only exception to this rule is unless there is a dedicated parking space to allow drivers to do so.

Wear your festive attire for Christmas Jumper Day is Thursday 8th December

The nation’s favourite TV celebrity pairs, including Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, and Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo have swapped their usual glam gear for cosy, festive attire, as they model their favourite festive knits in support of Save the Children’s annual Christmas Jumper Day on Thursday 8th December.

The This Morning and Made in Chelsea stars joined BBC presenters and mother-daughter duo Andi and Miquita Oliver, singers and celebrity Gogglebox favourites Martin and Shirlie Kemp and Good Morning Britain co-hosts Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins to pull on festive double-headed jumpers, to celebrate the UK government’s commitment to DOUBLE every donation to Save the Children this Christmas Jumper Day.

Other celebrities backing the campaign include singer and Starstruck presenter Olly Murs, Strictly Come Dancing professional Giovanni Pernice, Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway, Spice Girl Emma Bunton, The One Show presenter Alex Jones, activist and Loose Women panellist Katie Piper, Love Island star Dani Dyer, dancer and ex Strictly presenter Arlene Phillips, Premier League and FIFA World Cup presenter Seema Jaswal, TV doctor Dr Ranj Singh, and comedians Adam Hills, Suzi Ruffell, Adam Pearson and Lee Ridley.

Since launching a decade ago, Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day has raised in excess of £30 million to help transform the lives of children around the world. Now, the campaign is set to reach twice as many children as before, thanks to the UK government’s Aid Match funding which will double every donation up to £2 million.

With Brits becoming increasingly conscious of their fashion footprint, and with the cost-of-living crisis continuing to bite, the charity is also urging the nation to choose pre-loved woolies and up-cycled knits adorned with baubles and tinsel instead of hitting the high-street. In fact, previous research by the charity found that one in five have previously bought a second-hand Christmas jumper, while one in eight (13%) made their own.

To encourage sustainable fashion, all the famous faces supporting the campaign are modelling second-hand vintage jumpers, some of which will be distributed to Save the Children charity shops across the country for others to buy and enjoy.

Holly Willoughby said: “I’m really excited to be taking part in Save the Children's Christmas Jumper Day again this year and I'm delighted I get to do it alongside Phil! So go and grab your best mates on December 8th and don your favourite festive jumpers together. There's even more reason to get involved this year, as the UK government are matching donations to Save the Children, up to £2Million, so your £2 will go twice as far in helping children in the UK and around the world."

Olly Murs said: “Christmas Jumper Day is a great cause, and what better year to take part than this year, when the UK government is going to match every donation up to £2 million! Don’t forget to put the date in your diary and encourage as many of your friends and family as you can to join in the fun on Thursday 8th December.”

Giovanni Pernice said: "Christmas for me is all about catching up with my family and eating too much! I absolutely love this Strictly Come Christmas jumper, obviously! … it’ll be my choice for this year's Christmas Jumper Day!

"This is a campaign that I'm really proud to be supporting, all in aid of Save the Children. They're helping children around the world and it's a beautiful thing to do. Don’t forget to throw on your favourite jumper on December 8th and donate £2 to help children around the world have a brighter future. Lovely Jubbly.”

Miquita Oliver said: "I absolutely loved wearing this second-hand disco jumper to celebrate Christmas Jumper Day - I find getting dressed up for Christmas so much fun! If you don't already have a festive knit, take a look in your best friend's wardrobe or go to your local charity shop - you'll be amazed at what you can find - or what may find you!

To take part, get together with friends, family, colleagues or classmates, throw on your favourite second-hand sweater on Thursday 8th December, and donate £2 (or £1 for kids) to Save the Children.

For every £1 donated, the UK government will double it up to the amount of £2 million to help mothers and babies thrive in some of the most rural communities in Kenya.  All other funds raised will help some of the most disadvantaged children across the world, including the UK, get access to food, healthcare and education.

Find Christmas a bit much, sometimes? Then read on!

Christmas is a busy time for many of us. With more things to do than you can shake a candy cane at, the nights out, visits to family and the added expense not to mention more alcohol (and inevitable hangovers) added into the mix.

Perhaps you're a bit of a perfectionist and agonise over buying that perfect gift, cooking a flawless lunch or getting everything just right on the day for your kids.

Or maybe it's being out of your normal day-to-day routine that adds to your list, especially if it means you have less time for yourself or are getting less sleep.

So, what can you do to make the countdown to Christmas festive, happier and less stressful?

RESCUE®, the UK’s number one emotional wellbeing brand, has partnered with Chloe Brotheridge, hypnotherapist, coach and author of ‘The Anxiety Solution’, to bring six practical strategies for how to help ease some of that holiday load.

What would 'good enough' look like

If you're prone to being a perfectionist, remember this, perfectionism isn't about high standards, it's actually about never feeling that things are good enough. It's not the pursuit of what's good, but instead the pursuit of what's bad.

You can't win and it's a sure way to burn out and never feel satisfied. If this is the case for you, ask yourself what 'good enough' would look like. What is a good enough gift, outfit or dinner? Then remind yourself that good enough is always enough.

Rethink your triggers

The festive period can be a minefield for our triggers, where the words or actions of others can trigger painful emotions within us. The colleague who asks you 'why you're still single' at the Christmas party, the parent who treats you like you're still 15 or your partner having one too many drinks and being argumentative.

An effective way to navigate these difficulties is to think beforehand about what things may come up and then mentally rehearse how you'd like to respond instead. That might look like coming up with the ideal pithy reply, deciding to take the high ground and stay in your integrity or choosing to walk away and take some deep breaths. Making a plan for how you'll respond will help you to manage these difficult moments more easily.

Try the 'Physiological Sigh'

Braving the shops on Christmas eve? Up until midnight wrapping presents? Roast potatoes setting off the smoke alarm? Try this breathing method to quickly promote feelings of calmness. Dr Andrew Huberman from Stanford University created the 'physiological sigh'.

It can be done discreetly, and the resulting calmness happens right away. To do this, take a deep breath in through your nose followed by another smaller, quicker breath through the nose. After both in-breaths, exhale slowly out through the mouth. Do this one to three times to calm your nervous system quickly.

Ask for help

Many of us are great at helping others but find it hard to ask for or even accept help ourselves. If you're feeling overwhelmed, think about some specific ways that others could help out. Make the decision beforehand that if someone offers you help, you'll say yes - even if it feels uncomfortable for you to do this. Write a list of tasks that could be taken off your plate, such as bringing a dessert to Christmas dinner, helping you to wrap the kids presents or taking the dog for a walk. There are no prizes for doing everything yourself and many people want to help out and feel useful - don't deny them the joy of helping!

Switch off and unplug

With everything extra that Christmas brings, it can be helpful to remove some of the mental noise from our lives so that we don't get overwhelmed. Whatever that looks like for you, find a way to unplug and switch off. That might mean deleting the social media apps from your phone, steering clear of the news for a few days, making sure your out-of-office is firmly on, or deciding to put your phone in airplane mode after 7pm in the evening.

Stick with some routine

Our routine can be like an anchor that helps us to feel secure and safe. If you find yourself away from home for the holidays, try and maintain some level of normalcy in terms of your routine. Whether that means going on a couple of runs or keeping up with your daily 10-minute meditations, sitting down to drink a calming tea before bed; staying consistent with certain aspects of your routine will help you to take care of yourself and make it easier to get back into the swing of things once Christmas is over.

Maintain your inner control and keep on top of your days with RESCUE® Remedy by your side. It is a combination of five specially blended Bach™ Original Flower Essences and can be used anytime, anywhere and is suitable for all the family.

British garden designer Maxime Jones-Lloyd Garden Designs promotes ‘Evergreen’ gifts this Christmas over wasteful festive frivolity

This contribution is written by Maxime Jones-Lloyd Garden Designs.

‘Evergreen’ gifting champions the notion of permanence and gifts for all ages and budgets can focus on the garden.

Inspired by a rose she received as a child from Father Christmas, Maxime Jones-Lloyd provides tips on gifting ‘Evergreen’ presents this year.

The highly sought-after designer releases 10 ‘New Year Prelude’ Garden Design vouchers as ideal Christmas Gifts.

As we approach the festive season, bespoke Garden Designer Maxime Jones-Lloyd provides tips on ‘Evergreen’ Christmas gifting, urging consumers to turn their attention to presents that will long-outlive the Christmas season.

Fatigued by festive frivolity, the established garden designer is encouraging ‘Evergreen’ gifting – by promoting the longevity of gifts for the garden.

“There’s no better place to see a present flourish than in the garden. As a fabulous alternative to short-lived, quickly forgotten presents, gifts for the garden have great longevity and can be enjoyed all year round, no matter the size of the garden.” Commented Maxime Jones-Lloyd of Maxime Jones-Lloyd Garden Designs.

With ideas for all budgets and ages, the garden proves itself as a worthy source of inspiration this winter. From seeds to propagated plants, hedgehog houses to terracotta lanterns, ‘Evergreen’ gifts will inspire all who wish to gift consciously.

To mark the festive season, the Sussex based designer who has over 20 years’ experience of designing gardens for both town and country properties, has launched a special ‘New Year Prelude’ gift voucher, to promote the notion of sustainable gifting. The hand-painted gift voucher can be used for an hour-long Zoom introductory consultation, an exploration into seasonal planting or to discuss future landscaping and redesign projects.

Maxime Jones-Lloyd continued, “I was inspired by a rose Father Christmas brought me as a child and wanted to encapsulate that feeling of permanence. We are using our gardens more these days – Christmas is an ideal time to plan for the year ahead. I hope my ‘New Year Prelude’ vouchers will spread some festive cheer!”

Maxime Jones-Lloyd Garden Design’s ‘Evergreen’ Christmas Gift Suggestions

Home Grown: A cutting from a plant in your own garden gives a wonderful sense of continuity. Good plants for propagating in winter are Box Plants, Climbing Jasmine and Fuchsias, as well as Geraniums and Camellias. I plan to share some cuttings from my prized Bay Trees this year; they offer both ornamental and culinary properties.

Children: The garden offers a great opportunity to teach your child about our native birds and wildlife. I particularly like gifting birdfeeders to children – they provide a chance for the younger generation to play an active role in conservation. National Trust has some great options of standalone, hanging and even window bird feeders and houses, as well as unique bat boxes and hedgehog refuges. Additionally, by purchasing through the National Trust you will in turn be supporting the great work they do in caring for our nature and heritage.

Garden seating: Antique shops and salvage yards can be wonderful places to find things for the garden. Just recently I purchased a beautiful Victorian wrought iron Strapwork Bench for a client who wanted to sit and enjoy their view. For a substantial but long-lasting gift, a bench is a great idea. Wooden benches are more affordable – Jo Alexander has a stunning range.

Roses: You can often find roses with sentimental names; they make wonderful gifts. At this time of year, you will find bare root Roses which can be planted after Christmas ready for the first fledgling flowers to bloom next year. Peter Beales’ Roses are a great quality, I love the ‘Snow Bunny’ patio rose; David Austin also has a great selection.

Seeds: I love gifting seeds all year round – Higgledy Garden is my go-to supplier. Great for young and old, and a cost-conscious choice too, why not theme a selection of seeds such as vegetables for four seasons, or group a selection by colour?

Gardening Tools: Gardening can be incredibly therapeutic. An excellent pair of secateurs or a high-quality trowel can make perfect gifts to encourage a love of the outdoors and green fingers. Niwaki sell beautifully designed, excellent quality garden tools.

Accessories: In the same way we dress our house, I always urge clients to accessorise their garden too. I’m particularly fond of Pots and Pithoi’s Pelagia Olive Lantern which can be enjoyed all year round. They have a wonderful array of Cretan terracotta Pots too.

Garden Design Consultation: A Zoom consultation can make a wonderful gift, help your friends and family plan for the future with an hour-long online garden consultation. I’m releasing 10 vouchers this year, available on the Maxime Jones-Lloyd Garden Design website https://www.maximejoneslloydgardendesign.com.

‘Pets come first’ says Britain as pets set for purr-fect presents and paw-some treats this Christmas

Most Brits may be planning to cut back on Christmas spending this year, but pets will be spared from the impact of the cost-of-living crisis according to a survey released by Jollyes The Pet People.

Nearly 70% of pet owners will put a present under the tree for their furry friend this Christmas while 60% are planning to make their pet a special festive feed.

Only one in ten (11%) of people planned to spend more on their friends and families this Christmas and almost half (43%) to spend less, the Cison/Maru survey of 1,000 people across the UK revealed.

But according to Jollyes which has over 80 stores all over the UK, pet spend is being prioritised, with three-quarters of the population (75%) planning to spend the same or more on their pets this Christmas.

And almost as many men (65%) plan to buy a present for their pet as women (71%).

However, the nationwide statistics mask important regional variations.

When it comes to a meal with all the trimmings, it’s anything but grim up north with over two-thirds of owners in the North West (69%) planning to make a special Christmas dinner for their pets, just ahead of the West Midlands (67%) and London  (68%).

And while fewer planned the same in the East Midlands, Scotland and the South East, over half of owners in each of these regions were still planning a special ‘dog’s dinner’ this Christmas.

Meanwhile, dogs will be looking their best on Christmas morning as over a third of owners are planning to treat their pooches to a grooming session. In the North East 63% of dog owners plan to groom their pets for 25 December while more than half in the North West say they will do the same.

Jollyes head of marketing, Phil Turner-Naylor said: “The survey confirms what everyone at Jollyes already knows – pets come first. It wouldn’t be Christmas in the UK without the pets we love.

“Our survey shows pet owners are bending over backwards to make ensure their pets are pampered this Christmas.”

Jollyes has made its stores into a one-stop shop for a pet-tastic Christmas this year and knowing that owners want to spoil their animals it has doubled down on its promise to be Britain’s best value pet retailer this festive season.

And as the market leader in Northern Ireland, to highlight its Christmas ranges, this coming Sunday it plans to send its ‘Jollyes Days Are Coming” truck to Stormont in Northern Ireland so dog walkers in the grounds can see what’s on offer in store.

To find out more about Jollyes’ Christmas range visit www.jollyes.co.uk.

Make Anna Ling's song Oshun your Christmas Number One for £1

Anna Ling, a Devon-based folk musician, has made a timely, but unusual donation to Hope Spring, a Hereford-based water poverty alleviation charity, on November 17, 2022. Why was it unusual? Because the donation comes in the form of part of the royalties from her newly released single, “Oshun”.

In a tweet on the Hope Spring Water twitter page, the water poverty alleviation charity thanked Anna Ling for her kind and generous donation.

Hope Spring founder and trustee Temi Odurinde said, "How Anna chose us to be the beneficiary of royalties from her track Oshun is quite interesting. Oshun is a river in south-west Nigeria, and a deity of the same name lives in the river. Water from river Oshun is considered sacred by Oshun worshipers in the Yoruba diaspora".

Temi added, "I hope Anna’s song does well in the charts. It will be a great boost to some of the projects we have in the pipeline". Hope Spring worked on three clean water projects this year, and is currently working on the fourth in Ketu, Lagos, Nigeria.

Anna Ling first contacted Hope Spring about donating proceeds from the Oshun single to them, earlier in the year. The Oshun song was released in November 2022, it will be included in the musician’s forthcoming album, which she is crowdfunding to put together.

Hope Spring fundraising team manager Seun Olonade said, "We are very pleased with Anna’s kind donation. It will be a boost to our fundraising efforts.

"Our charity Christmas video ecard will not be the only fundraiser over Christmas, we hope some of the royalties from Anna’s song will help as well". You can find more information and a download link to Anna Ling’s song at this link https://annaling.bandcamp.com/track/oshun.

Shop Small campaign celebrated this Christmas by American Express

As American Express is celebrating a decade of of its flagship Shop Small campaign, new research shows the incredible camaraderie and resilience that exists among small business owners in the face of ongoing challenges.

A survey of retail and hospitality sector business owners on behalf of American Express and Small Business Saturday, found that the vast majority (90%) agreed it was important to support other local, independent businesses, with 85% saying they actively promote other suppliers and small businesses local to them. A similar number (83%) said they always tried to work with these suppliers where possible.

Recognising the vital contribution their businesses make locally and the need to support fellow entrepreneurs, three quarters of respondents (74%) agreed there was a strong sense of community among small businesses in their local area.

While over half (56%) of these small business owners said the next outlook for their business over the next six months would be “challenging”, over a third (36%) said they were “optimistic” and one quarter (27%) “excited”.

Celebrating 10 years of shopping small

2022 marks 10 years since the American Express Shop Small campaign launched in the UK (in 2012) and the tenth year of Small Business Saturday on 3 December. American Express continues to be the principal supporter of Small Business Saturday, encouraging Brits to back the nation’s small businesses that have such a positive impact on our local communities.

At its heart, the UK is a nation of entrepreneurs with the number of small businesses having grown significantly over the past decade.2 The research reinforces some of the biggest rewards of running your own business. Three fifths (59%) of respondents said the top benefit was “being their own boss”; 45% cited “job satisfaction”; and a quarter (26%) pointed at “having a positive impact on the local community”.

Dan Edelman, General Manager, UK Merchant Services at American Express, said: “Our research offers further proof of how community-focused and generous of spirit small business owners are. They are facing hugely challenging times but appreciate and support the valuable contribution their fellow entrepreneurs make. We’re proud to continue championing them with the return of our Shop Small campaign and Offer, available at more locations than ever before this winter, as well as through our long-standing support of Small Business Saturday on 3 December.”

Michelle Ovens, Director of Small Business Saturday UK, added: “While small businesses are undoubtedly facing a host of challenges currently, this research underlines that being an entrepreneur is also still a hugely fulfilling thing to do and the UK is still a great place to start your own business. The strength of collaboration bubbling away across the small business community is a big reason for this. But as well as support from each other, business owners need support from everyone around them, including the public.”

Shop Small seeks to mobilise American Express’ loyal Cardmembers, encouraging them to spend instore with small retailers this festive season, generating additional sales, new customers and boosting brand loyalty for merchants. From 3 - 12 December 2022, American Express Cardmembers will receive a £5 statement credit when they spend £15 or more at participating small businesses across the UK. The offer can be used up to 5 times, once per participating small business location, meaning that Cardmembers can reward themselves with up to £25 back in statement credits, making their spending go further this December.

The Shop Small Offer is fully funded by American Express at no cost to merchants. The total number of participating locations this campaign has risen by 34% compared to the campaign in December 2021, the biggest number ever.

Terms, locations and payment restrictions apply. For full terms and conditions please visit the Shop Small Hub. Offer excludes Corporate and Pre-Paid Cards.

Tough Christmas this year? Brits facing the grimmest December since WWII need to plan ahead, says ParcelHero

As Brits face up to the biggest fall in living standards since World War II, everyone is seeking out ways to economise this Christmas. Home delivery expert ParcelHero says buying and sending gifts early could save families a fortune.

This Christmas is set to bring back memories of World War II. Some items, like turkeys and eggs, are rationed because of bird flu and an authoritarian ruler has invaded a fellow European country. In addition, Brits are braced for the tightest squeeze on real incomes since 1945.

There’s little wonder that, according to new research from home delivery expert ParcelHero, Brits plan to spend £4bn less on food, gifts and entertaining over the Christmas season compared to last year. It will be a ‘make do and mend’ Christmas this year as shoppers face unprecedented household bills and soaring inflation.

ParcelHero’s Head of Consumer Research, David Jinks M.I.L.T., says: "For anyone old enough to remember the War, the mood will be grimly familiar. Back then, people had to cut their spending dramatically on gifts and food, and there was severe disruption to supplies and deliveries. That’s a problem that could be experienced again this Christmas because of strikes, delivery driver shortages and the closure of ports because of a resurgence of Covid in China.

"However, that doesn’t mean we'll all be reduced to Christmas stockings filled with nuts, knitted socks and an orange. There are ways for Brits to save enough money to have a decent Christmas, without resorting to dodgy deals with “spivs” (as war time black-market traders were known) or making their own board games."

He went on to explain: "One great money saver that requires little more than good planning is to buy presents online earlier than normal and to send them earlier, too.

"Leaving enough time to buy online using slower free or low-cost delivery options can save pounds, rather than opting for expensive next-day deliveries. For example, for orders under £50 from John Lewis you’ll pay £4.50 for a standard delivery, which takes up to five working days. However, if you’ve left it late and want a next-day delivery it’s £7.50.  In fact, if you have really left things late there’s a pre-10.30am next-day delivery for £10.95. You’ll have spent £6.45 more than you needed to.

"Likewise, House of Fraser charges £4.99 for a standard delivery of 3-7 days, but £9.99 for a panic next-day option. That’s a fiver you could have saved by planning ahead. Leaving everything until the last minute soon adds up.

"One small piece of good news is that global shipping rates are very competitive now, and anyone looking to send a parcel abroad can make the most of this. Again, though, the earlier you send something, the more you'll save. And you could be looking at savings of £20 or more.

‘For example, if you are sending a parcel to the USA using ParcelHero, a 3kg parcel measuring 15x15x15cm costs from £32.80 for a slower service to £52.25 for a next-day delivery.

‘That’s a further saving over traditional Post Office prices that, for the same-sized parcel, would be £44.85 for a 5+ days service, increasing to £72.70 for a 1+ days delivery.

"Similarly, the same parcel sent to friends and family in Australia would cost £43.83 for a 6+ days service from ParcelHero, but £47.90 for a 3-days service. Again, that’s still cheaper than joining the Post Office queue.

"Post Office services cost £59.85 for a 5+ days service, £61.85 for a 3+ days service and £88.80 for a 1+ days service to Australia. All parcel prices quoted are +VAT, a tax first introduced as a “temporary” measure during WWII incidentally, as Purchase Tax. Back then it was a tax on luxury goods of 30%.

"For Christmas 1941, even small packages to UK destinations had to be mailed by 20 December. Today, if you really must leave sending a parcel until the last minute, then “Keep calm and carry on”, as they might have said during the War. You can still send a parcel to a UK destination and even the USA until 23 December. So, at least some things won’t be quite so austere this year!

"For those who really have to leave buying and sending until the last minute, our continually updated Christmas deadlines tool is so useful for keeping shoppers in the know with all their favourite retailers." final order dates. Buy early for Christmas! Experts issue Christmas tree warning

Christmas as we know it is under threat not due to bird flu and a turkey shortage, but a lack of trees.

Experts at GardeningExpress.co.uk are warning families they may have to pay a significantly higher amount more for their Christmas trees than ever before this Christmas after record summer temperatures brought about reduced crops.

It is believed the record temperatures experienced across the UK and most of Europe combined with many weeks without significant rainfall resulted in difficult growing conditions for Christmas tree farmers.

The heatwave caused many trees to shed their leaves earlier than normal this year in what some commentators described as a ‘false autumn’. Evergreen Christmas trees stopped growing due to heat stress affecting them and many plantations that weren't able to irrigate experienced what experts are describing as "significant" losses of growing stock.

The supply of larger sized Christmas trees was also impacted by a severe drought and heatwave across Europe in 2018 when younger saplings that should now be ready to be harvested perished. The most impacted sizes are the best selling circa six footers, these are expected to be more scarce than usual, meaning prices are likely to be higher than in previous years.

Political problems across Europe have also brought about supply chain issues which could impact the importation of trees from colder climes.

It’s this combination of political and environmental issues which has led to a perfect storm this year when it comes to Christmas tree supplies.

The experts from GardeningExpress.co.uk point out that reduced supply could lead to increased costs for customers just when families are already struggling with the cost of living crisis.

GardeningExpress founder Chris Bonnett said: “Christmas tree growers have really struggled this year and we're expecting supplies of quality trees to be significantly impacted, -so if you want a good one, you need to order as early as possible or visit a retailer in person, at GardeningExpress we only sell top grade Christmas trees, but retailers usually buy mixed pallets from plantations to offer a variety of sizes, so no doubt there will be a higher ratio of lower grade trees in their this year.

“Most people order up their Christmas tree at the end of November and start of December and give it precious little thought before then.

“But for Christmas trees to be lush and verdant come December they had to be planted well in advance and they needed plenty of water in the months leading up to December.

“That just hasn’t been the case for all suppliers this year. Growers have had to struggle with record temperatures, water and labour shortages which brought about a reduction in quality and quantity of the crop.

“It will be a problem particularly for those wanting larger bushy Christmas trees, there is definitely going to be fewer of those around this year, and consequently they'll carry a premium price.

“The best advice is to pre-order your tree as early as possible to make sure you don’t miss out.”

The perfect Christmas gift. A Scottish Stocking Filler - Kinloch Lodge's New Anniversary Cookbook

If you are seeking out the perfect Christmas gift for a foodie family member or friend, then you search could well be over. Because you can offer them a taste of the Highlands with the new cookbook from the famed Kinloch Lodge Hotel.

Lovingly published to help celebrate the hotel and restaurant's 50th anniversary, the new hardback book has over 35 delicious recipes from their head chef, Jordan Webb, each beautifully photographed by Alan Donaldson.

But it's much more than being just a cookbook. Because it's an eminently readable part family-memoir, part love letter to Skye, its landscapes and its people, the cookbook sings it son with a very real sense of place. Scattered amongst the recipes are vignettes of the hotel's history and heritage, interviews with local producers, tips on foraging and much, much more besides.

Food has always been central to the Kinloch story. The hotel, originally constructed as a working farmhouse, it then saw service as a shooting lodge, was opened by Godfrey, Lord Macdonald and High Chief of Clan Donald, and his wife, world-renowned cook Claire, in 1972.

From day one, Claire pioneered using local ingredients from Skye's natural larder and working with passionate artisanal producers. This ethos and passion for seasonality and sustainability has been carried on by Jordan Webb, who has created innovative polytunnels and herb gardens at the hotel and forages daily from the loch's shoreline.

The cookbook is split into four main sections, each  reflecting the scenery of Skye and the natural larder of the hotel's kitchen.

These four chapters, Forest, Field, Coast and Garden, contain standout recipes from Jordan and Claire, as well as short essays on topics including topics as diverse as foraging, whiskey on Skye and ancestral relatives, such as Flora Macdonald, who aided Bonnie Prince Charlie after the Battle of Culloden.

 Seasonal Recipes Include:

Venison, sage and walnut polenta, with bramble jus

Braised beef short ribs, with potato skins and creamed cabbage

Kohlrabi salad with walnuts and lemon

Gorgeously illustrated throughout, with photos of the hotel and the island, the tome is book-ended by essays from the Macdonald family. The foreword by Godfrey Macdonald reflects on how the hotel has changed throughout the past five decades, while A Kinloch Childhood by Hugo Macdonald, Godfrey and Claire's son, reveals the adventures to be had growing up in a Highlands hotel.

The book has been co-written by Claire Macdonald, Jordan Webb and Alisha Fernandez Miranda. Alisha is a writer who splits her time between Edinburgh and Skye, where she lives within five minutes of a Kinloch breakfast. She's been published in Vogue, Grazia, Metro, and other titles. Her memoir, My What-If Year, will be published in the US by Zibby Books in early 2023. Full biographies of the authors are available on request.

Price: Fifty Years, Kinloch Lodge, RRP £35. The book is available for purchase on the Kinloch Lodge website (Kinloch-lodge.co.uk).
