Staying Connected with Family Over Christmas: Using Social Media and Messaging Apps

The festive season is a time to cherish family connections, but for many of us, distance can make in-person gatherings difficult. Fortunately, social media platforms and messaging apps make it easier than ever to bridge the gap and stay close to loved ones, no matter where they are in the world.

Here's how you can use tools like Telegram, Facebook, and others to make your Christmas extra special.

Years ago my father wanted to enable a family chat between my mother's sister in the States and our family as a Christmas treat for my mother.

The call had to be booked hours in advance and then connection was made by the operator and the quality of the line left a lot to be desired as we all huddled round the hall by our phone. And the cost? It was a small fortune!

But now staying connected with family member, no matter where they live in the world is as easy as following these ideas:-

1. Organise a Family Group Chat

Creating a family group chat on apps like Telegram, WhatsApp, or Facebook Messenger is one of the simplest ways to keep everyone connected. You can share updates, Christmas plans, and festive photos in real-time.

Why Telegram? It supports large groups and offers fun features like stickers, GIFs, and voice messages. Bonus: It’s secure and has great cross-device syncing.

Why WhatsApp? It’s easy to use and widely popular, making it accessible for less tech-savvy relatives.

Top Tip: Set group ground rules to prevent message overload. For example, designate specific times for chats or festive updates.

2. Schedule a Virtual Celebration

If you can't be together in person, host a virtual Christmas party! Platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or even Facebook Rooms are perfect for this. Plan a time for everyone to gather, and include fun activities such as:

A virtual gift exchange.

Sharing holiday stories.

Singing carols together.

Top Tip: Send out invitations in advance and test the tech with less tech-savvy family members beforehand to avoid day-of mishaps.

3. Share Moments with Social Media

Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok offer creative ways to celebrate and share the Christmas spirit.

On Facebook, create a private group to share photos, videos, and updates exclusively with your family.

Use Instagram Stories or Reels to post snippets of your Christmas preparations or special moments.

Record a fun family video on TikTok and tag relatives for some holiday cheer.

Top Tip: Encourage everyone to post something festive, like their Christmas tree, favourite holiday recipes, or the opening of presents.

4. Create a Collaborative Holiday Album

Google Photos and similar apps allow you to create a shared album where everyone can upload and view Christmas pictures and videos. It's a wonderful way to document the holiday season collectively, especially if family members are spread across different locations.

5. Send Personalised Messages

While group chats are great, a one-on-one message can make someone feel truly special. Use platforms like Telegram or Messenger to send personal notes, voice messages, or even a video greeting. A heartfelt "Merry Christmas" can brighten anyone's day.

Top Tip: Add festive stickers or effects to your messages for a creative touch.

6. Play Virtual Games Together

Several apps and platforms allow you to play games together online. For instance:

Use Houseparty for fun, interactive games like trivia.

Organise a virtual Christmas quiz on Kahoot! or Quizizz.

Play board games digitally via Tabletopia or similar platforms.

7. Host a Countdown to Christmas

For an extra festive touch, organise an online countdown to Christmas Day. Each day, post something fun in your family group chat: a riddle, a memory, or a challenge. This builds anticipation and keeps everyone engaged throughout December.

8. Respect Time Zones and Schedules

If your family is scattered across different countries, be mindful of time zones. Use scheduling tools like Doodle or Time Zone Converter to find the best times for virtual gatherings or group chats.

Final Thoughts

Christmas is all about celebrating love, joy, and togetherness, and technology makes it easier than ever to stay connected. By using social media and messaging apps creatively, you can ensure that distance doesn’t dampen your holiday cheer. Whether it’s a simple video call or a full-blown virtual Christmas bash, these digital tools can make your celebrations merry and bright.

Merry Christmas and happy connecting!

How to Organise and Host a Brilliant Christmas Quiz

The festive season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than by hosting a Christmas quiz?

Whether it's at your local pub, for your club, your workmates, or just for family and friends, a quiz night is the perfect way to bring people together.

It’s fun, festive, and filled with friendly competition. Here’s how to organise and host a Christmas quiz everyone will remember.

1. Choose Your Venue and Audience

The setting of your quiz will dictate a lot of your decisions. Are you hosting at a pub, your club, the office, or at home?

For larger groups, a spacious venue with enough seating and a microphone might be necessary. For smaller, intimate gatherings, your living room or a cosy corner of a pub will do just fine.

Make sure the environment fits the tone of your quiz – fun and relaxed, with a touch of festive cheer.

2. Set the Date and Spread the Word

Pick a date that works for your audience, ideally a week or two before Christmas when the festive spirit is in full swing. Avoid overly busy dates like Christmas Eve or weekends when people may have other plans.

Send out invites via email, social media, or old-fashioned Christmas cards for a personal touch. Include details like the time, venue, and whether there’s a prize for the winners.

3. Create Festive Quiz Rounds

The heart of any quiz is its questions, so make them engaging and Christmassy. Here are some ideas for festive quiz rounds:

Christmas Films: Name the movie based on a quote or describe a plot in a few words.

Music Round: Play snippets of Christmas songs for teams to identify, or go for a “finish the lyrics” challenge.

General Knowledge: Mix in some Christmas-related trivia (e.g., What’s the best-selling Christmas single of all time?).

Picture Round: Show pictures of famous Christmas traditions, celebrities dressed as Santa, or festive foods.

History & Traditions: Questions about Christmas customs from around the world.

Keep the rounds balanced to suit everyone – not just the trivia buffs!

4. Equip Yourself With the Right Tools

You’ll need some essentials to keep the quiz running smoothly:

Answer Sheets: Provide sheets for teams to write down their answers.

A Timer: Keep rounds on schedule with a timer or stopwatch.

Speaker System: If it’s a large crowd, a microphone and speakers will ensure you’re heard.

Projector or Screen: Great for picture or video rounds.

You can also use online platforms like Kahoot or Google Forms for a tech-savvy quiz night.

5. Add Festive Decorations and Extras

Set the mood with Christmas decorations. Hang fairy lights, garlands, and maybe a mistletoe or two. A festive dress code, like Christmas jumpers or Santa hats, adds to the fun.

Consider offering mulled wine, mince pies, or other festive treats to keep everyone in high spirits.

6. Decide on Prizes

People love a bit of competition, especially when there’s a prize involved. Keep it light-hearted with festive-themed prizes like:

A bottle of wine or bubbly

A hamper of Christmas goodies

Gift cards

A humorous trophy, like a "Christmas Quizmaster Crown"

Have a small consolation prize for the team in last place to keep it fun for everyone.

7. Be a Great Host

As the quizmaster, it’s your job to keep the energy high and the atmosphere lively. Inject some humour, don’t be afraid to banter with teams, and keep the quiz moving along at a good pace.

8. Add a Twist

Spice things up with a few unique twists:

Bonus Points: Offer extra points for best team name or best festive attire.

Speed Round: Include a rapid-fire round where teams shout out answers.

Secret Santa Round: Hide bonus prizes under chairs or have a random “lucky team” winner.

9. End on a High Note

Finish the evening with a heartfelt thank-you to everyone for participating. Announce the winners with a bit of fanfare, hand out the prizes, and maybe have a festive singalong to close the night.

10. Follow Up

If it’s a regular event, get feedback on what people enjoyed or what could improve. Sharing photos or funny moments from the quiz on social media can help keep the festive spirit alive and encourage attendance next year.

With a little planning and a lot of Christmas cheer, your quiz night is sure to be a hit. So, put on your Santa hat, brush up on your trivia, and get ready to host a fabulous Christmas quiz!

Stronger Voices, More Independence! DOUBLE the difference your Christmas donations make to people with learning disabilities

Birmingham-based charity, CASBA Advocacy have been selected for the third year-running to participate in the UK-wide Big Give #ChristmasChallenge, and every donation made through the BIG GIVE during the week of 3rd to 10th December will be doubled. Yes. DOUBLED.

That means, whatever you can give, no matter the size, every donation will make double the difference in supporting adults with learning disabilities to learn how to self-advocate and change society.

People with learning disabilities are one of the four most disadvantaged groups in all of society. They are often financially excluded, socially marginalised, discriminated against, experiencing the widest health inequality of any group, and now struggling to deal with the worst cost of living crisis in recent memory.

They face complex and longstanding problems, which require a holistic approach to solving them. Without an advocate who will help them, their problems can seem insurmountable. CASBA's advocates ensure people with a learning disability understand their options, have their voice listened to when they express their opinions, and know their rights.

But CASBA can't do it alone, with the public's support and donations, CASBA can recruit and train more advocates and make an even bigger impact.

Some adults with learning disabilities share the difference CASBA Advocacy has made in their lives;

"CASBA helped me stand up for my right to education" says B, who was able to complete his studies with CASBA’s advocacy support.

At CASBA Advocacy's Self-Advocate group "We talk about things that affect our lives” says young self-advocate M.

"Before CASBA I wouldn't talk to anyone, now I want to tell people what is possible with CASBA Advocacy's help” says J.

If you'd like to help CASBA Advocacy make a difference to even more lives, double your donation, by visiting CASBA Advocacy's BIG GIVE donation page Stronger Voices, More Independence

About CASBA Advocacy

CASBA Advocacy helps people with learning disabilities to get their voices heard and their rights accepted. CASBA Advocacy wants to create a society where people with learning disabilities live as equal citizens.

Companies can now solve their impact problems and reduce scope 3 emissions from old tech by sponsoring additional students, basic computer classes and tech labs. Please contact them to discuss further: https://www.socialbox.biz/corporate-impact/

With over a decade of impact SocialBox.Biz initiative is part of a sustainability strategy reducing scope 3 increasing social impact and many companies are supporting this community interest company. Turning Broken Gold into Timeless Treasure: The Perfect Christmas Gift for Someone You Love

Christmas is a season of love, warmth, and meaningful gestures. What better way to show your affection than by giving a truly unique gift—one that holds both emotional and material value?

Instead of buying something new this year, why not repurpose old or broken gold jewellery and transform it into a bespoke, handcrafted piece that will last a lifetime?

Not only is this sustainable and budget-friendly, but it also adds a deeply personal touch to your present.

Here’s how you can breathe new life into old gold to create a stunning and thoughtful Christmas gift.

Step 1: Gather Your Gold

Start by collecting old gold pieces that have been forgotten in your jewellery box. This could include broken chains, single earrings, worn-out rings, or outdated designs. Even small scraps of gold, like clasps or charms, can be repurposed. These pieces often hold sentimental value but aren’t wearable in their current state, making them ideal for reinvention.

Step 2: Decide on a New Design

Think about the recipient and what they would love to wear. Would they prefer a minimalist gold band, a statement necklace, or a pair of elegant earrings? If you’re unsure, consider their personal style, favourite motifs, or even their birthstone to incorporate into the design.

For example:

A broken wedding band could be transformed into a pendant symbolising eternal love.

Old chains could be melted down to create a pair of bespoke hoop earrings.

Several small pieces could combine to form a charm bracelet with personal significance.

Sketch out your ideas or bring inspiration photos to guide the goldsmith.

Step 3: Find a Skilled Goldsmith

Choosing the right artisan is key to bringing your vision to life. Look for a goldsmith who specialises in bespoke jewellery and has experience working with recycled gold.

Many jewellers offer consultations where you can discuss your design and learn about the crafting process.

They can also advise you on how much gold will be needed, whether additional materials (like gemstones or extra gold) are required, and how best to preserve the sentimental elements of your old jewellery.

Step 4: Watch the Magic Happen

Once your goldsmith has your old pieces, they will melt down the gold and handcraft it into your new design. This process is not only sustainable but also ensures that every gram of your gold is put to good use. If your jewellery includes gemstones, these can be reset in the new piece, adding even more charm and individuality.

Step 5: Add a Personal Touch

To make your gift even more special, consider adding an engraving. A heartfelt message, a special date, or even a simple "Merry Christmas" can turn a beautiful piece of jewellery into a treasured keepsake.

Why This Gift Is So Special

Sustainability: Repurposing old jewellery is eco-friendly, reducing the demand for newly mined gold.

Sentimentality: The gift carries the emotional weight of the original pieces, making it truly unique.

Craftsmanship: Handcrafted jewellery exudes quality and individuality, far surpassing mass-produced items.

Timeless Value: Gold remains a precious commodity, ensuring the piece holds its worth over time.

Make This Christmas Shine

This Christmas, let your gift tell a story. By repurposing broken gold, you’re not just creating a new piece of jewellery; you’re crafting a meaningful token of love and care. Whether it’s for a partner, parent, sibling, or friend, a custom-made gold piece is the perfect way to show how much they mean to you.

So, dig out those old trinkets, find a talented goldsmith, and give the gift of timeless beauty this holiday season. After all, nothing shines brighter than love—and a little gold doesn’t hurt either!

Why You Should Seek Out Charity Christmas Cards and Gifts

The Christmas season is a time for giving, and there’s no better way to embrace the spirit of generosity than by choosing charity Christmas cards and gifts.

These simple choices can make a significant impact, not only brightening the day of your loved ones but also contributing to causes that make the world a better place.

Here's why you should consider making charity a part of your festive traditions.

1. Spreading Joy to Those in Need

Charity Christmas cards and gifts directly support organisations working tirelessly to help vulnerable communities, protect the environment, fund research, or provide essential services. Every purchase sends a ripple of kindness far beyond the person receiving your gift. Imagine a small card funding a meal for someone in need or a thoughtful present contributing to medical breakthroughs.

2. Meaningful Choices with Purpose

When you opt for charity cards or gifts, you’re giving more than just a token gesture. These items often have unique designs and stories behind them, making your gift-giving more thoughtful and heartfelt. Whether it’s handmade jewellery supporting fair trade artisans or a charity card featuring artwork from children or local artists, these choices reflect your values and spread awareness.

3. Eco-Friendly and Ethical Options

Many charities are committed to sustainability, offering eco-friendly cards and gifts made from recycled or ethically sourced materials. By choosing these, you reduce your environmental impact while supporting a good cause—a double win during a season that can often generate excess waste.

4. Supporting Local and Global Communities

Charity cards and gifts often support both local initiatives and global projects. Whether you want to back a local hospice, a national wildlife trust, or an international disaster relief effort, these purchases allow you to align your festive spending with causes close to your heart.

5. Inspiring Others

Giving charity gifts can inspire others to think differently about their holiday spending. Your gesture may encourage family and friends to explore how they too can make a difference, creating a ripple effect of goodwill and compassion.

6. It’s Budget-Friendly

Charity cards and gifts come in a range of prices, making it easy to find something meaningful within your budget. Many charities offer “virtual gifts,” where you donate towards a specific cause on behalf of someone else, making it a thoughtful and affordable alternative to traditional presents.

7. Tax Break for the Charity

If a charity is registered for Gift Aid they can receive an extra 25% in tax on every eligible donation made by a UK taxpayer, from the UK government.

Where to Start

Charity Shops: Visit local charity shops or browse their online stores for cards and unique gifts.

Special Events: Look out for charity fairs and Christmas markets where organisations showcase their products.

Online Platforms: Many charities have dedicated websites or partner with platforms like eBay for Charity or Etsy for handmade, ethical gifts.

A Gift That Gives Twice

By choosing charity Christmas cards and gifts, your holiday spending becomes a tool for positive change. It’s a small act that embodies the true meaning of the season: love, kindness, and generosity. This year, let your gifts go the extra mile and bring joy to those who need it most.

Make your Christmas brighter, not just for those you love, but for the wider world too.

Choosing the Ideal Christmas Gift for the Home Cooks in Your Life

Christmas is the perfect time to show appreciation for the home cooks in your life. The ones who whip up delicious meals, bake comforting treats, and turn ordinary evenings into memorable feasts.

Whether they're seasoned chefs or enthusiastic beginners, finding the right gift can make their culinary adventures even more enjoyable.

Here's a guide to help you choose the ideal Christmas gift for the food lover in your life.

1. Assess Their Skill Level

Before you actually get into doing any shopping, consider their cooking experience. A beginner may appreciate essentials like a quality knife set or a beginner-friendly cookbook, while a seasoned cook might treasure a more specialised tool, such as a sous-vide machine or an artisanal set of spice blends.

2. Personalise to Their Preferences

Every cook has a unique style. Think about their go-to cuisines or favourite dishes. Are they a passionate baker? Opt for a beautiful rolling pin or a set of silicone baking mats. Love experimenting with global flavours? A spice subscription box or a wok could be a winner. Tailoring your gift to their tastes shows thoughtfulness and care.

3. Invest in Quality Tools

Well-made kitchen tools are always appreciated. Look for durable, high-quality items that will stand the test of time. Ideas include:

Chef’s knife: A versatile, razor-sharp knife is a must-have.

Cast iron skillet: Perfect for everything from searing steaks to baking cornbread.

Stand mixer: A luxury item for bakers that can handle heavy-duty tasks.

4. Enhance Their Pantry

Consumables make fantastic gifts. Gourmet oils, rare spices, or artisanal vinegars can inspire creativity in the kitchen. For a festive touch, consider gift hampers with a mix of ingredients, like truffle products, premium pasta, or decadent chocolate.

5. Bring in Some Fun Gadgets

For those who enjoy experimenting, quirky gadgets can be delightful. Think:

Immersion blenders for soups and smoothies.

Herb keepers to keep greens fresh longer.

Food dehydrators for making dried fruits, jerky, or even decorations.

6. Elevate Their Dining Experience

Cooking isn’t just about food; it’s about the joy of sharing it. Gifts that enhance the dining experience, like elegant serving platters, wine decanters, or handmade napkins, can add a touch of luxury to their table.

7. Don’t Forget Education

For the curious cook, consider gifting experiences or knowledge:

Cooking classes: In-person or online sessions in a cuisine they love.

Cookbooks: Look for books with inspiring recipes and beautiful photography.

Magazines: A subscription to a foodie magazine keeps the inspiration flowing year-round.

8. Think About Storage Solutions

Practicality goes a long way. A sleek spice rack, airtight containers for pantry items, or a knife block can help them stay organised while adding charm to their kitchen.

9. Sustainable Options

For eco-conscious cooks, look for gifts that align with their values, like beeswax wraps, reusable produce bags, or a compost bin for kitchen scraps.

10. Add a Personal Touch

Finally, consider something unique. Personalised aprons, engraved cutting boards, or monogrammed utensils make wonderful keepsakes that add sentimental value to their kitchen.

Wrapping It Up

Home cooks pour their heart into every dish, so gifting them something thoughtful and useful can bring them as much joy as they bring to your table. With a little consideration of their preferences and needs, you’re sure to find a present that will light up their Christmas—and their kitchen.

Happy gifting, and may your Christmas season be as delightful as a perfectly roasted Christmas turkey!
