Host a Festive Family Pet Painting Competition This Christmas!

Christmas brings a special magic to our homes, filling them with laughter, love, and warmth.

While we’re busy decking the halls and wrapping presents, why not add a touch of creativity to your celebrations this year?

Hosting a family pet painting competition is the perfect way to bring everyone together for some festive fun – and with pets as the stars of the show, it’s bound to be a memorable event!

Here’s everything you need to know to make your family’s pet painting competition a holiday highlight.

1. Set the Scene for Festive Fun

Transform a cosy corner of your home into an art studio. Lay down a large tablecloth or some newspaper to protect your surfaces, and stock up on basic painting supplies: canvases, paints, paintbrushes, pencils, and even some glitter for added Christmas sparkle. Setting out some mince pies and hot chocolate (or a mulled wine for the grown-ups!) will make it a truly festive experience.

For added cheer, put on some classic Christmas tunes and let everyone don their favourite festive jumpers. It’s not just about painting; it’s about creating an atmosphere that’ll make everyone feel inspired and merry!

2. Choose Your Muse: Featuring Your Family Pet(s)

The star of this competition? Your beloved pet! Whether it’s a fluffy cat, a cheeky dog, or even a fish in a bowl, let each family member paint their unique rendition of the family’s furred or feathered friend. If you have multiple pets, you can even assign a different one to each person or let everyone choose their favourite animal to capture.

For those with young children, consider printing out photos of the pet in different poses or even letting them have a quick sketch session to study the pet’s face and features. This helps build anticipation, especially if your pet has a personality all its own.

3. Establish Fun and Flexible Rules

Keep the rules simple and flexible. The goal is for everyone to enjoy the creative process, not to worry about producing a ‘perfect’ painting. You might set a time limit – say, 30 minutes to an hour – or let everyone take their time. For an added festive twist, allow participants to include Christmas elements, like a Santa hat, reindeer antlers, or a snow-covered background!

A few fun rule ideas:

Age-based categories (younger children, teens, adults) to make it fair for everyone.

Style themes such as ‘cartoon,’ ‘abstract,’ or ‘festive costume’.

Mixed-media entries if someone wants to add collage or glitter!

4. Make Judging a Family Affair

When all the masterpieces are complete, it’s time for the ‘exhibition’ and judging! Each person can display their artwork for everyone to admire. To make things even more festive, consider creating mini trophies or certificates for different categories, like ‘Most Creative,’ ‘Best Likeness,’ and ‘Funniest’. You could even ask a family friend to serve as an impartial judge if you’d prefer!

5. Share the Festive Joy – and the Laughs

Once you’ve crowned the winner, don’t let the fun stop there! Share photos of everyone’s paintings on social media, or even make copies to send in Christmas cards to family and friends. If you’re feeling particularly creative, you could even use a photo-editing app to turn your artwork into a digital Christmas card that features your family’s artistic pet portraits. It’s a fun way to spread the holiday cheer and showcase your family’s unique talents.

6. Keep the Spirit Alive All Season Long

After the competition, hang the artworks up around the house for the rest of the holiday season. There’s something heartwarming about seeing everyone’s interpretations of your family pet adorning the walls. Plus, it’s a lovely reminder of the special family time you spent together.

A family pet painting competition is a simple, cost-effective way to bring everyone together in the spirit of Christmas. It’s a chance to create lasting memories, laugh together, and maybe even discover a hidden artistic talent or two!

This Christmas, let your pets be the muse and your home be the gallery. Here’s to festive fun, family bonding, and a season filled with love and laughter!

Age UK Lambeth Launches Heartwarming Christmas Campaign ‘MYHoHoHo’ Christmas Day meal service

Age UK Lambeth is delighted to announce the launch of their festive fundraising campaign, ‘MYHoHoHo’, aimed at bringing joy and support to older individuals in the community this Christmas season.

Recognising the importance of connection and care for our older population—many of whom may be facing loneliness and isolation—Age UK Lambeth is determined to address the issue of loneliness, which affects 1.2 million older people across the UK.

This year, they aim to raise funds to provide Christmas meals to those who will be on their own by matching them with local volunteers, as well as to help keep their services operational over the festive period, a time that can be particularly lonely and isolating for older individuals.

“We are excited to launch our ‘MYHoHoHo’ campaign, which is all about spreading joy and making a positive impact on the lives of older adults in Lambeth,” said Paul Coles, CEO at Age UK Lambeth. “This time of year is often challenging for many, and with your support, we can provide companionship, warmth, and vital resources to those in need.”

To support their campaign they're requesting for volunteers to sign up to provide an extra serving of their Christmas Day meal to a local isolated and lonely neighbour, bringing companionship and good cheer!

They are also asking the community to participate by sharing their Christmas cheer and helping generate funds that will directly support Age UK Lambeth’s essential services and programmes.

Through JustGiving, individuals can donate and join in the festive spirit of giving, making sure no older person in Lambeth feels forgotten during the Christmas season.

All funds raised via the campaign will also go towards Age UK Lambeth’s vital support services, including home visits, social activities, and essential care for vulnerable older adults in the area. For more information on how to volunteer, please visit our website or to make a direct donation visit their Just Giving page.

A spokesman said: "Together, let’s make this Christmas a time of joy, connection, and support for older individuals in our community."

Explore the Folklore of Winter with Midwinter’s Magical Quest at Butser Ancient Farm

That's Christmas loves to carry reports about Butser Ancient Farm's activities. In part this is because I studied history and archaeology in college before I embarked on a career in journalism and writing.

Hampshire's Butser Ancient Farm invites you to experience the rich tapestry of ancient winter traditions at this year’s Midwinter’s Magical Quest: Yules of Yesteryear.

Set against the backdrop of Butser's historic buildings, this immersive, family-friendly event will take you on a journey through time to experience the winter customs of the Saxons, Romans, Celts, and Neolithic peoples.

Learn about the magic of winter festivals, meet characters from folklore, and engage in hands-on activities and crafts inspired by the past.

This year, Butser has developed exciting new characters to bring more Yules of Yesteryear to life for visitors.

A Journey Through Ancient Winter Celebrations in the heart of Hampshire

This December, step into a world where folklore comes alive, and the spirits of midwinter are honoured as visitors embark on a quest to bring a message to the Deer Queen. The Holly King, guardian of Winter, has gone missing, and your journey to find him will take you through an immersive blend of time-honoured traditions—from fireside tales in an Iron Age roundhouse to the mischievous revelry of Saturnalia in the Roman Villa.

Join Rowena in the Saxon Hall for Glæd Geol!

Midwinter, or Yule, was a major celebration for early Medieval people, marking the return of the sun after the Winter Solstice.

In the cosy Evergreen Saxon Hall, you'll meet Rowena, the Lady of Yule, who carries the magic of the ancient Forest of Bere. She whispers to the deer, and they listen, a gift likely bestowed by her connection to the fae folk.

Visitors will be able to hear about the Scandinavian folklore of the Tomten or Nisse—helpful household spirits who guard the farm and home in winter. But be warned: these spirits demand respect! If they are not rewarded, they can become very mischievous...

During Yule, Saxons celebrated the return of the sun with great feasts and the burning of the Yule log, a symbol of warmth and hope for longer days ahead. Join Rowena in natural crafting and learn more about these ancient traditions.

Io Saturnalia! Revel with Felix, the Lord of Misrule

Next, step into Butser's Roman Villa and immerse yourself in the festive chaos of Saturnalia! Saturnalia was a time of role-reversal, where masters served slaves, and everyone joined in joyous feasting, games, and gift-giving.

Meet Felix, a slave who has been elevated to the role of Lord of Misrule for the day and join in the spirit of Saturnalia by making your own sigillaria—small wax figures that were the traditional Roman gifts of the season.

The festival's roots in generosity and mischief remain strong in today’s celebrations, with Felix guiding you in the traditions of Roman feasts and merrymaking. And if you're successful in waking Saturn—the god of time and agriculture—you may even receive a message from the god himself about the importance of giving and generosity.

Iron Age Winter Wishes and Festive Storytelling

Venture back to the Iron Age where the Winter Solstice could have been a time of great feasts and gatherings. Archaeological evidence suggests feasting may have been a significant part of past winter festivities.

Join them in the Great Roundhouse, where the storytellers will share ancient tales around the fire, as guests sip warm drinks and indulge in sweet treats. The Winter Wishing Trees await your hopes for the season, and a special message will be delivered to guide you onward in your quest.

Allow the fire, food, and friendship of ancient gatherings to echo through the ages and bring warmth to the darkest night.

Will You Find the Holly King and Meet the Deer Queen?

In British mythology, The Holly King rules the darker half of the year until the Winter Solstice when his power peaks.

His brother The Oak King eventually battles and defeats him, ushering in the return of longer days and light. But in this year’s quest, the Holly King has disappeared!

Visitors will need to journey through the different time periods to gather the wisdom of the ages, find the Holly King and make sure his reign lasts long enough for us to enjoy all that Winter has to offer.

At the end of your quest, you will meet the radiant Deer Queen in our Neolithic Horton Longhouse. Her character draws on British and Celtic mythology, inspired by goddesses like Epona, the protector of horses, and Danu, a mother figure tied to nature. The Deer Queen embodies the bond between humans and the natural world, reminding us of the turning of the seasons and the new hope that Spring brings.

A Festive Family Experience Like No Other

This December, Butser Ancient Farm invites families to experience Midwinter’s Magical Quest, a celebration of winter's gifts, generosity, and the enduring power of light in the darkness. With hands-on nature-based crafting, immersive storytelling, and encounters with legendary characters from the past, this event offers an unforgettable journey through time and tradition.

Kristin Devey, who developed the winter experience at Butser Ancient Farm, shared her excitement about this year's Midwinter Quest: "We are delighted to welcome visitors to Butser this winter for a truly magical experience.

"This year's quest brings to life even more folklore, characters and ancient traditions, offering a chance to reconnect with the heart of the season—away from the rush and commercialism of modern festivities. We invite you to gather your friends and families, reflect on the simple blessings of winter, and take home the warmth, wisdom, and timeless customs of Yules long past."

Event Details:

Driving home (safely) for Christmas

There's one thing missing from Chris Rhea's iconic feel good Christmas song Driving Home for Christmas, which is a road safety message.

But that's the job of the road safety pressure group, TyreSafe.

As Christmas looms ahead and the winter months bring more challenging driving conditions like heavy rain, driving at night, sleet, snow, and high winds, TyreSafe is launching the ‘Home Safely for Winter’ campaign.

This new initiative calls on road users to ACT on tyre safety, a small but essential step that could mean the difference between arriving safely at Christmas and facing hazardous incidents on the road.

The campaign will compliment, support and coincide with Brake’s Road Safety Week, which runs from the 17-23 November. The campaign also reinforces the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC)’s initiatives which highlight the additional driving hazards present during the winter months. ‘Operation Dark Night’ and ‘Operation Limit’, running in November and December respectively, demonstrate the additional enforcement resources applied during the winter months to promote safer road use, including vehicle maintenance and driving standards.

An alarming 6.1 million tyres in the UK may already be illegal when a vehicle owner seeks advice on the need for replacement, putting millions at risk.

Tread depth is vital for vehicle braking, handling, and grip—especially during winter, when icy and wet roads significantly increase stopping distances. TyreSafe urges all road users to take a few minutes to check their tyres, ensuring their own and others’ safety. In addition, the AA attends over 620,000 tyre-related breakdowns each year, which, during harsher conditions can present additional hazards and disruptions.

The ‘Home Safely for Winter’ campaign is built around the ACT message, a simple three-step guide to help road users make informed decisions about their tyre safety:

Air Pressure - Proper inflation is essential, as under-inflated tyres reduce fuel efficiency and impair handling, especially on slippery roads.

Condition - Look for cuts, bulges, or other signs of damage that could cause a blowout or loss of control.

Tread - Tread depth should meet the legal minimum of 1.6mm, although deeper tread provides better grip, crucial on winter roads.

"The ‘Home Safely for Winter’ campaign is about encouraging road users to take responsibility for their safety," says Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe's Chairman. “

He went on to say: "When conditions are at their worst, tyre safety becomes even more important. Running concurrently and in support of the NPCC’s winter enforcement road safety initiatives, and Brake’s Road Safety Week, we are urging road users to take a few minutes to ACT- checking air pressure, condition, and tread depth—which can reduce the risk of incidents and ensure everyone can make it home to their loved ones safely."

To support the campaign, TyreSafe provides winter driving advice, from slowing down on icy roads to maintaining greater stopping distances and ensuring visibility by clearing windscreens and checking headlight functionality.

Additionally, having a winter survival kit in case of a breakdown can be invaluable. Essential items include warm clothing, blankets, water, a torch, and de-icer. It is also imperative that vehicle owners ensure their screen wash is topped up to maintain optimum visibility. Failure to maintain adequate washer fluid in a vehicle could result in a careless driving charge, punishable by a minimum £100 fine and 3 penalty points.

Supporters of ‘Home Safely for Winter’ can access a toolkit with resources including social media assets, printable materials, and ongoing tyre care advice, available through TyreSafe’s website. The campaign invites road users and organisations to spread the word by sharing the #HomeSafelyForWinter message, reminding the community that tyre safety only takes a few minutes but can save lives.

The campaign will run through November and December, as road users prepare for and begin to experience the colder months ahead. TyreSafe encourages everyone to join the conversation, helping spread awareness of tyre safety and its life-saving potential.
