Brewdog Distilling Co. Launches Whisky Cask Programme

Scotland's only carbon negative distillery, BrewDog Distilling Co, announces their first ever whisky cask sale. Going live this month, the maverick spirits company steps up their whisky innovation programme, with the golden opportunity to own a cask of their inaugural single malt and single grain whisky, from the newly launched distillery.

That's Christmas is featuring this news because we feel that a cask of whisky would make an excellent Chirstmas gift for the true connoisseur of fine Scotch whisky.

The 50 casks will be part of an exclusive collection, the very first to be filled from the distillery's brand new still house in Ellon, Scotland. The auction will be launched at 19.00 on Wednesday 7th December 2022, in partnership with distinguished whisky auction house, Whisky Hammer. The auction will end on Sunday 11th December, with the casks being filled in early 2023.

The Whisky

BrewDog Distilling Co. capitalised on the combined spirits expertise of their excellent distilling team led by Master Distiller, Steven Kersley. They have historically worked for some of Scotland's leading distilleries and have pent years refining their craft, striving to better the whisky production process at every stage.

Produced from BrewDog Distilling Co's brand-new standalone distillery, opened this year, 2022, that allowed for a 300% increase in whisky production as well as a climate-controlled warehouse capable of holding almost 1,000 whisky casks. The BrewDog Whisky Casks will be the first casks filled at the new distillery.

The distilling team elected to create whiskies that truly reflect BrewDog Distilling Co's core ethos of  'questioning everything, experimenting and innovating' all in the pursuit of incredible flavours.

This dedication includes using multiple intricate blends of yeast strains to create bigger flavours, triple bubble distilling for increased purification and controlling the humidity of their maturation warehouses.

Steven Kersley, MD of BrewDog Distilling Co said: "This whisky has been the natural progression for BrewDog Distilling Co. for some time now, it's something we're incredibly excited about, if not a little daunted. We want to challenge the way Scotch whisky is viewed, consumed and valued. We've put everything into this, dissecting the entire process, focusing on the flavour and creating the best liquid possible!"

Bidders will be in the running to purchase a choice of 3 different 200L casks from:

30 ex-Oloroso sherry cask matured, filled with flavour-focused new make spirit, made from golden promise barley

15 first fill ex-bourbon cask matured, filled with flavour-focused new make spirit, made from golden promise barley

5 exclusive ex-bourbon cask matured, filled with a rye-forward single grain whisky made with an 80% rye malt bill

The Flavour

The single malt, new make spirit is laden with ripe tropical fruits, hints of stone front with a malty back bone and a citrus top note. The rye grain whisky will feature caramel sweetness, dark stone fruits, a little baking spice and a touch of orange rind to finish.

The Auction

With casks starting from £5,000 (excluding commission, VAT and duty) winning bidders will have their casks held in BrewDog Distilling Co's bonded warehouse. This is based on the Balmacassie Estate in Ellon, adjacent to the distillery, where it will lie until the owner feels it is ready to bottle.

The Whisky Founder Club

Each investor will be granted complimentary access to BrewDog Distilling Co's Whisky Founder's Club, launching in May 2023. The club is limited to a total number of 500 individuals who invested into the top tier of the Equity Punks crowd funding raise.

As part of their investment, BrewDog Distilling Co. will bottle and brand their whisky at a minimum of four years old. Each member will have the option to attend the Whisky Founders Club open day, an annual event where cask owners will be able to sample from their cask, meet with the distillers, discuss the future of their whisky and will be invited to sample many of the eclectic whisky's maturing in the BrewDog Distilling Co warehouse.

Why not make your own Christmas hampers this Christmas?

Everyone loves to receive a Christmas hamper filled with all sorts of goodies. And they can be a very good purchase.

But what if this year you find yourself a little bit too strapped for cash to be able to purchase a Christmas hamper? Don't despair! Why not make your very own bespoke Christmas hampers to make a very special, personalised gift for the special person in your life?

Where can you buy hampers or boxes from? Ikea sell them from between £10 to £25. www.ikea.co.uk.

However, my favourite source of hampers and wooden boxes that are eminently suited for a DIY Christmas hamper is The Works.

The Works stocks oval hamper kits at £5.00, Large Wooden Crate Hampers at £6.00, Fill Your Own Mini Christmas Hamper: Assorted at £3.00, Wooden Crate Hamper at £4.00 and my favourite, a real lidded wicker hamper with straps at £10.00. (PICTURED) https://www.theworks.co.uk/c/home-living/home-storage/hamper-baskets

So, what can you fill them with? Morrisons (for example) stock a range of individual portion preserves and honey, so you can put together a range of them and place them in the hamper with suitable crackers and biscuits, in one of the smaller hampers. Or what about a range of toys? You can even make a hamper for your pet, if you want to.

You can also fill the larger hampers and boxes with miniature wine bottles, full sized wine bottles, a range of real ales or a range of typical Christmas foods including mince pies, stollen, panettone, spiced biscuits, tinned foods, desserts, etc, etc.

The only limit is your imagination and your budget.

Money-saving Monday: Have a Best Buy Christmas for less

As grocery prices continue to rise, more shoppers are looking for ways to save money on festive favourites in the lead up to Christmas

Which? has uncovered a selection of cheaper options which scored highly in its festive taste testing,  proving shoppers can save money without compromising on taste.

1. Champagnes and sparkling wines

Shoppers can save significantly on fizz by opting for cheaper sparkling wines instead of expensive champagne. The most expensive bottle of champagne Which? tested cost £39, but in its sparkling wine test, the consumer champion found great-tasting options for as little as £8.99, a potential saving of £30 by switching to sparkling wine over expensive champagnes.

Aldi’s Specially Selected Crémant Du Jura tied in first place in the sparkling wine test, securing a Which? Best Buy endorsement. It was also one of the cheaper bottles tested costing £8.99. The panel commended it for its crisp and refreshing taste, hints of green-apple, guava and grapefruit and its smooth, creamy finish.

Another supermarket bottle that impressed the judges was the Co-op’s Irresistible Prosecco, costing only £9. The judges enjoyed its zesty aroma and notes of ripe peach, pear and jasmine. They also noted it was fresh-tasting and decent value, branding it a ‘crowd-pleasing’ choice. However, crémant is a closer match to champagne if you want a similar-tasting drink for less.

2. Red wine

While some supermarket red wines can cost more than a bottle of fizz, the Which? panel found shoppers don't have to spend a lot to get a good quality red, uncovering a Best Buy bottle for just under £8.

Aldi’s Chateau les Trois Manoirs Medoc 2019 was awarded a Best Buy and scored an impressive 77% costing £7.99 per bottle. The panel commended its smoky oak aromas, which contrasted well with notes of ripe redcurrants and a peppery finish.

3. Christmas pudding

In the Christmas pudding category, Asda’s ‘Extra Special’ Christmas Pudding stood out from the crowd and was awarded a Which? Best Buy and Great Value endorsement. Coming in just behind Which?’s overall winning pud, it received high scores for aroma and texture, with tasters enjoying its sweet smell, moistness, and great taste. It was the joint-cheapest pudding on test costing £8 (£1 per 100g) and was noted as a worthy pick if you’re after a brilliant budget pudding.

4. Brie

Which?’s expert cheese-tasting panel blind-tasted seven premium supermarket Brie de Meaux cheeses for the 2022 festive season. They tested brie from supermarkets like Asda, Aldi, M&S, Sainsbury’s and more, and uncovered a cheaper brie that impressed the judges with its well-balanced flavour: Asda’s Extra Special Brie de Meaux, £3.20 for 180g. This near-champion cheese missed the top spot but came second overall – it was marked as a solid, cheaper pick by the panel.

5. Mince pies

Which? also put mince pies to the test. Waitrose’s Brown Butter Mince Pies with Cognac came top for taste. However, proving paying less doesn't have to mean compromising on quality, Aldi’s mince pies also earned a Best Buy award plus Which?’s Great Value endorsement. Aldi scored an impressive 73% in Which?’s test, just a fraction behind the top-rated premium pies. As the cheapest tested, Aldi’s Specially Selected Mince Pies are almost 50% cheaper than those sold by Waitrose, costing just £1.75 for 6, or 29p per pie.

6. Baileys

Which? matched supermarket versions of Irish cream liqueur against the popular brand Baileys. While Baileys couldn’t be beaten on taste, it came in top at 76%, the panel of 72 consumers were impressed by several supermarket options and crowned a Great Value pick costing less than £8.

Aldi’s Specially Selected Irish Cream Liqueur scored an impressive 74% and at a mere £7.99 per bottle, a whole £8.51 cheaper than a full-price bottle of Baileys.

While its smell might not be quite as enticing as Baileys, tasters thought its appearance, flavour and mouthfeel were on a par with the branded version.

Which? only awards its Best Buy logo to those products that hit the gold standard for quality in its independent tests. The consumer champion recently launched a Great Value award for items which cost significantly less than the typical price in a category but still score well overall.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, said: “No one wants to overpay for festive treats, especially with so many households under huge financial strain in the run-up to this year’s Christmas.

“Our taste testers sampled festive favourites from the largest supermarkets in the UK to find out which ones will make the holiday season extra festive this year and found some great options which won’t break the bank.”

24 ways to waste not this Christmas

This Christmas, the Environment Agency is sharing 24 simple steps that we can all take to make more sustainable choices.

At this time of year around a worrying 30% more waste is generated. This includes over 1 billion Christmas cards which are thrown away every year.

It’s estimated by the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs, that around 50,000 trees are cut down each year to make enough paper to wrap presents. Also, around 12 million tonnes of plastic enter our environment annually, equivalent to a bin lorry load every single minute.

By following the simple steps outlined by the Environment Agency below we can ensure Christmas isn’t wasteful this year.

1. Advent calendar

Invest in a reusable advent calendar and fill it with a variety of gifts. Why not get creative and make your own reusable advent calendar and items to fill it with?

2. Cards

Approximately 1 billion Christmas cards are thrown away annually. It would take the equivalent of 33 million trees to make that amount of cards.

Try and purchase cards printed on FSC-certified, recycled card and are recyclable. Better still, why not go for the personal touch and make your own from recycled card? Remember just like wrapping paper, cards decorated with glitter or foil, can’t be recycled.

3. Christmas wreath

Wreaths are a beautiful Christmas decoration, but some are more eco-friendlier than others. Go for a real, fresh wreath made using seasonal, natural foliage and adornments. Even better, make your own out of natural resources from your garden likes leaves and pinecones.

4. Christmas tree

An artificial Christmas tree needs to be used for about 10 years for its’ environmental impact to be lower than a real tree.

Trees, woods, and forests are vital for tackling the climate emergency. Buying your real Christmas tree from a certified by Grown in Britain supplier will ensure the tree you purchase is from a legal and sustainable UK source.

5. Christmas lights

500 tonnes of Christmas lights are discarded annually in the UK. And if you've not switched to using LED lights on your Christmas tree, make the change now and you’ll be using less energy but make sure you switch them off at night!

6. Decorations

Avoid using single use decorations. Why not get crafty and make some homemade decorations instead?

7. Reusable shopping bag

When you are out shopping don’t forget to take your bags for life!

8. Gifts – make and bake

A homemade gift is unique and very personal and not only shows thought but can also be lower in cost, too. You could make preserves, jams or knit a pair of socks or scarf! Or even make your own hamper, filled with small jars of preserve?

9. Gifts – toys

Have you thought about buying preloved toys or a toy subscription? How about buying wooden toys over plastic?

10. Gifts – experiences

You could gift a membership to a charity or wildlife trust, helping to support vital environmental work like the National Trust or Woodland Trust.

11. Gift – eco

Why not give eco-friendly gifts to family and friends?

It could be something like a reusable coffee cup, reusable makeup remover wipes or a solid shampoo bar helping others make sustainable lifestyle choices.

12. Wrapping presents

Use recyclable wrapping paper wherever possible. Remember if it’s got foil or glitter on it then it can’t be recycled and could contain plastic, too.

Or why not use old newspaper to wrap gifts or even recycle last year’s paper?

13. Bows

Instead of adding plastic ribbons to your gifts that will end up in landfill, why not use a more sustainable alternative like a fabric bow that can be kept and re-used on future gifts?

14. Christmas party wear

Every year, an estimated 336,000 tonnes of used clothing is thrown away by people living in the UK. This year, choose the sustainable option and try to refashion clothing that you already own, or visit second-hand shops, or take old clothing to charity shops?

15. Glitz and glam

Did you know cosmetic and sanitary wipes contribute to 93% of sewer blockages in the UK? Once flushed down the toilet, wipes can get caught in piping and accumulate, congeal with fatbergs. They can litter beaches and even create large, messy mounds along the banks of riverbeds.

If you use make-up wipes this Christmas, remember to never flush them!

16. Christmas Eve box

Invest in a reusable Christmas Eve box that can be used for many years to come, perhaps even becoming a family heirloom! Get creative and make your own reusable box and items to fill it with.

17. Christmas travel

Where possible, try and use public transport when visiting family and friends this year. If this isn't possible, try and car share. This will help reduce emissions, wear and tear on the vehicle but will also save you money.

18. Candles

If you are using candles this year as part of your festive celebrations, please remember to buy candles made of, soy wax, bees wax, coconut wax or rapeseed wax scented with essential oils, cotton, hemp or wooden wicks. All these candles are kinder to the environment as they’re less toxic.

19. Christmas crackers

Unfortunately, most Christmas crackers are often laden with glitter means they’re not recyclable. They are filled with plastic toys and gifts that are soon thrown away.

Why not make your own Christmas crackers without the environmental cost? Using FSC-certified, recyclable paper and recyclable paper ties. Filling the cracker with small presents for each person.

There are Christmas crackers available to purchase that use FSC-certified, recycled paper and the items inside are sustainable too.

20. Festive food shopping

Try and buy as many items as possible from local suppliers, like your meat, fruit, and veg. Buy your vegetables loose where possible, as plastic packaging accounts for nearly 70% of the UK plastic waste.

Plan and be realistic about how much food you need and use up leftovers where possible.

Instead of clingfilm, use reusable containers/covers and wax cloth covers to keep your leftovers fresh.

21. Christmas dinner

When it comes to cooking Christmas dinner and other festive treats, there are some simple yet important ways we can protect the environment.

Pouring leftover cooking fats down the sink can harden in cold pipes. Instead leave to cool, then scrape into the food waste or bin. Don’t feed a festive fatberg this Christmas.

22. Festive drink

We use over 35 million plastic bottles every day, so when you are buying drinks for the festive season, please buy products that can be reused/recycled.

23. Christmas walk

Instead of a Christmas drive or just dropping down in front of the TV why not go out for a Christmas walk?

If you swapped an hour of TV for a walk you could save 170g CO2e.

Being in a green space has been shown to be good for your physical and mental health. Make sure you follow the Countryside Code which tells you how to get out and enjoy green spaces while respecting wildlife and other people.

24. Unwanted gifts

Approximately £4 billion is spent on unwanted gifts. That is over 60 million unwanted gifts every year!

If you receive a gift that is not something you would use, there are various things you could do rather than throwing it away.

You could donate the item to charity, sell the item or organise a charity sale for unwanted gifts. Remember 1 person’s trash is someone else’s treasure.

New for this year are the Heston from Waitrose Festive Peking Duck, Slow Cooked Treacle Cured Festive Gammon and their British Pork Jewelled Stuffing Wreath. All their fresh pork comes from British farmers we know and trust, and we recently committed a £16m support package to our pork farmers as the industry faces its biggest crisis in a generation.

Cakes, Bakes & Desserts

An after dinner treat doesn’t always have to be sweet! Their Heston from Waitrose Fig & Pear Mince Pies in Triple Cheese Pastry has been inspired by Heston’s own favourite flavour combinations - Eccles cake and cheese! And a supermarket first - their brand new savoury Parmesan & Cracked Black Pepper Panettone - delicious served toasted with pâté or cheese.

Since it’s Christmas, there’s definitely room for something sweet too! Among the showstopping desserts for this year are their stunning No.1 Blood Orange and White Chocolate Quenelle, Limoncello Pandoro and our Heston from Waitrose Mandarin Negroni Stollen.

Parmesan and Cracked Black Pepper Panettone - a supermarket first, this Italian-inspired cake is made with butter, parmesan and a sprinkle of black pepper. Heston from Waitrose Pear and Fig Mince Pies in Triple Cheese Pastry - inspired by one of Heston’s own favourite creations, Eccles cake and cheese. Like the original recipe, they bring together the flavours of a festive cheese board: the buttery puff pastry is laced with Cheddar, Emmental and Italian hard cheese and the mincemeat inside captures the taste of a Christmas chutney, with plump vine fruits, figs, Bramley apple, a splash of Ruby Port, candied pears, nutmeg and ginger. The perfect partner for our new Kilner jar of Heston's Tipsy Potted Stilton.

Martyn Lee, Waitrose Executive Chef, said: "This year’s Christmas range really has the 'wow’ factor. It's such an exciting Christmas for us in terms of new product development, especially with our stunning No.1 Quenelle dessert and our new savoury Parmesan & Cracked Black Pepper Panettone. Quality and taste are at the forefront of all our product development and our team has worked really hard to make sure that there is something for every one of our customers this festive season, no matter how they might be choosing to celebrate.”

Chocolate is a must at Christmas time and this year we’ve got some delectable newbies joining our already delicious range. For those who like their chocolate with a fruity twist, the Heston from Waitrose Hidden Christmas Pudding Orange (a twist on Heston’s infamous Hidden Orange Christmas Pudding) is the perfect choice. Our Vanilla Snowballs are sure to be loved by all and our Dark Chocolate, Cherry & Amaretto Fudge makes for a delicious treat for the grown ups.
