Gluten-Free Dessert Recipes for a Merry Christmas

The festive season is nearly upon us, and if you or someone in your family is gluten intolerant, Christmas can be tricky with traditional desserts off the table.

Fortunately, gluten-free desserts can be just as decadent, delicious, and festive as any!

Below, you'll find some wonderful gluten-free dessert recipes that will keep everyone in high spirits this Christmas.

1. Gluten-Free Christmas Pudding

Nothing says Christmas quite like a traditional Christmas pudding, rich with fruits and spices. Here’s a gluten-free version that’s moist, delicious, and captures the essence of this classic British dessert.

Ingredients:

100g raisins

100g sultanas

100g currants

50g chopped dates

50g chopped apricots

100g gluten-free plain flour

100g suet or dairy-free alternative

100g soft brown sugar

1 apple, grated

Zest of 1 lemon and 1 orange

2 tbsp brandy (or apple juice for a non-alcoholic option)

1 tsp mixed spice

½ tsp ground cinnamon

2 large eggs, beaten

Instructions:

Soak all dried fruits in brandy overnight.

In a large bowl, mix the soaked fruit, grated apple, zest, sugar, suet, and spices.

Stir in the flour and beaten eggs until well combined.

Spoon the mixture into a greased pudding basin, cover with greaseproof paper, and secure with foil.

Steam for 5-6 hours in a large pot with water halfway up the basin, checking the water level occasionally.

Serve with brandy butter, custard or cream.

2. Gluten-Free Mince Pies

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan).

In a bowl, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Mix in sugar, egg yolk, and water to form a dough.

Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut out circles for the bases and stars for the tops.

Place a spoonful of mincemeat into each pie and top with a pastry star.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden. Dust with icing sugar to serve.

Now Everyone can Have a Snacky Christmas! Exploring Alternative Gluten-Free Snacks for People with Coeliac Disease and Autoimmune Conditions

Living with coeliac disease or another autoimmune condition often means maintaining a strict gluten-free diet.

However, cutting gluten out of your meals shouldn't mean missing out on tasty snacks and treats.

Thankfully, there are a wide variety of alternatives available, catering to different tastes and nutritional needs.

In this post, we'll explore some creative and satisfying gluten-free snacks that are both healthy and indulgent, perfect for anyone avoiding gluten due to health conditions to ensure everyone can enjoy snacking at Christmas without becoming ill.

1. Rice Cakes and Nut Butter

Rice cakes are naturally gluten-free and provide a light, crunchy base for all sorts of toppings. Pair them with a nut butter like almond, peanut, or cashew for added protein and healthy fats. To boost flavour and nutrients, add slices of banana, strawberries, or a drizzle of honey. This snack is not only delicious but also filling and energy-boosting, making it a fantastic option for an afternoon pick-me-up.

2. Chickpea Snacks

Roasted chickpeas are a fantastic alternative to crisps and other crunchy snacks. Rich in protein and fibre, they can be seasoned with various herbs and spices like paprika, cumin, or rosemary. These little bites offer a satisfying crunch while providing essential nutrients, perfect for those with gluten intolerance or autoimmune conditions.

3. Vegetable Crisps

If you're missing the satisfying crunch of crisps, try vegetable crisps made from sweet potatoes, beetroot, or kale. These are not only gluten-free but also pack more vitamins and minerals compared to traditional potato crisps. You can buy them pre-made or make them at home by thinly slicing your favourite vegetables and baking them with a light coating of olive oil and sea salt.

4. Quinoa Bars

Quinoa is a nutrient-dense, gluten-free grain that makes for an excellent base for snack bars. You can find pre-made quinoa bars in most health food stores, or you can make your own at home by combining cooked quinoa with seeds, nuts, dried fruit, and a natural sweetener like maple syrup. Quinoa bars are rich in protein and fibre, making them a great snack for on-the-go energy.

5. Gluten-Free Crackers and Hummus

Many gluten-free cracker options are available in supermarkets, made from ingredients like rice, corn, or flaxseeds. Pair these with a delicious dip like hummus for a balanced, savoury snack. Hummus, made from chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic, is naturally gluten-free and offers a good source of protein, healthy fats, and fibre.

6. Fruit and Nut Mixes

A simple but nutritious snack is a mix of dried fruits and nuts. Look for combinations that include almonds, walnuts, cashews, and seeds like sunflower or pumpkin seeds, mixed with dried cranberries, apricots, or raisins. This snack is naturally gluten-free and provides a balance of healthy fats, protein, and carbohydrates. Be mindful to choose unsweetened or sulphite-free dried fruits to avoid unnecessary additives.

7. Gluten-Free Popcorn

Popcorn is naturally gluten-free and can be a healthy snack when prepared without too much butter or sugar. Try air-popped popcorn, flavoured with sea salt or nutritional yeast for a cheesy, savoury twist. You can also add spices like chilli powder or cinnamon to create different flavour profiles.

8. Chia Pudding

Chia seeds are tiny nutritional powerhouses, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, and protein. When soaked in liquid, they form a gel-like texture, perfect for making chia pudding. Mix chia seeds with almond milk, a dash of vanilla, and a sweetener like maple syrup or honey, and leave it to set in the fridge for a few hours. Top it with fresh berries or nuts for a satisfying, gluten-free snack.

9. Energy Balls

Energy balls are a quick, homemade snack option that requires no baking. They are often made from gluten-free oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits, bound together with nut butter or coconut oil. You can customise the flavours by adding cocoa powder, cinnamon, or vanilla. These are great for a burst of energy without the need for gluten-containing ingredients.

10. Yoghurt with Gluten-Free Granola

For a quick and nourishing snack, pair natural or Greek yoghurt with a sprinkle of gluten-free granola. Many granola brands now offer gluten-free options, made from oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. This combination provides a good balance of protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates, making it an ideal option for those needing to avoid gluten.

Final Thoughts

Navigating life with coeliac disease or an autoimmune condition can be challenging, but it doesn't mean you have to give up on enjoying delicious and satisfying snacks. With the wide variety of gluten-free options available today, it's easier than ever to maintain a balanced diet that supports your health and well-being.

Whether you're reaching for something crunchy, sweet, or savoury, these alternative gluten-free snacks ensure that you're not only avoiding gluten but also getting the nutrients your body needs to thrive.

Catering Christmas Meals and Snacks for People with Food Allergies

Christmas is a time of festive gatherings, indulgent treats, and hearty meals. However, for those with food allergies, it can often be a season of caution and anxiety.

Whether you’re hosting family members or friends with allergies or want to ensure your holiday spread is inclusive, being mindful of ingredients and preparations is crucial.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to cater Christmas meals and snacks for people with allergies, without compromising on flavour and festivity.

Understanding Common Food Allergies

Food allergies can vary greatly in severity, so it’s important to be aware of what can trigger a reaction. Some of the most common allergens include:

Nuts (tree nuts and peanuts)

Dairy

Gluten (coeliac disease and gluten sensitivity. My wife is diagnosed with coeliac disease)

Eggs

Shellfish and fish

Soy

Sesame

Sulphites (found in some alcoholic drinks and processed foods)

Before planning your Christmas menu, communicate with your guests to find out about any specific allergies they may have. This will not only show that you care but will also help you avoid any unnecessary risks.

Tips for Allergy-Friendly Christmas Catering

Plan an Inclusive Menu The key to an enjoyable and safe Christmas meal is creating a menu that caters to everyone. Aim to have dishes that are naturally free of allergens so that there are no complicated substitutions. For example, roasted vegetables, seasonal salads, and fresh fruit platters are all naturally gluten- and dairy-free.

Label Everything For a buffet-style Christmas gathering, make sure to clearly label all dishes. This helps guests with allergies know exactly what’s in the food. Use small cards or decorative labels to mark potential allergens, such as ‘Contains Nuts’, ‘Dairy-Free’, or ‘Gluten-Free’. It’s a simple yet effective way to ensure everyone feels comfortable when choosing what to eat.

Avoid Cross-Contamination Cross-contamination can be a major concern when catering for allergies. Here are some steps you can take:

Use separate utensils for preparing and serving allergen-free dishes.

Cook allergen-free meals first to avoid any residue from shared cooking spaces or equipment.

Clean thoroughly—ensure cutting boards, knives, and surfaces are properly cleaned before using them for allergen-free meals.

Store safely—keep allergen-free dishes in separate containers to avoid accidental mixing.

Allergen-Free Substitutes For traditional Christmas favourites, you can often find allergen-friendly alternatives that taste just as good:

Gluten-free flour can be used in baking cakes, biscuits, and even in your Christmas pudding. But do make sure your favourite recipes work with gluten-free flours, etc.

Dairy-free milk (such as almond, coconut, or oat milk) works well in many desserts, sauces, and hot drinks.

Egg substitutes (like chia seeds, flax seeds, or commercial egg replacers) can help with baking.

For nut allergies, seed butters like sunflower or pumpkin seed butter can often replace peanut butter in recipes.

Check the ingredient labels of packaged foods, as some allergy-friendly products are readily available in most supermarkets.

Festive Drinks Without Allergens Alcoholic beverages can sometimes be tricky for those with allergies, particularly sulphite sensitivity. Stick to natural wines or sulfite-free options, and if in doubt, provide a range of non-alcoholic drinks, such as festive fruit punches, homemade spiced apple cider, or herbal teas. Plant-based milk alternatives can be used for hot chocolate or coffee, ensuring dairy-free guests are catered for too.

Allergy-Friendly Christmas Recipe Ideas

To inspire your festive cooking, here are a few allergy-friendly Christmas dishes and snacks that everyone can enjoy:

Roast Turkey or Chicken with Herbs (gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free): A classic centrepiece without any allergens, just be mindful of stuffing ingredients.

Vegan Nut Roast (nut-free version): For plant-based guests, create a nut-free roast using lentils, grains, and seeds instead of nuts.

Dairy-Free Mince Pies: Use dairy-free margarine or coconut oil in the pastry to create these seasonal treats.

Gluten-Free Christmas Cake: A gluten-free alternative using almond flour or a gluten-free flour blend.

Fruit Skewers with Melted Dairy-Free Chocolate: A fun and festive dessert that’s suitable for many dietary needs.

Spiced Roast Vegetables: Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, and parsnips roasted with olive oil and Christmas spices.

Mulled Wine or Spiced Apple Cider: Use natural ingredients without added sulphites, perfect for warming up your guests.

Conclusion

Catering for food allergies during Christmas may require extra planning, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. By offering a variety of delicious and inclusive options, you ensure that all of your guests can enjoy the festivities without worry.

Be mindful of cross-contamination, choose allergen-free substitutes where needed, and most importantly, communicate openly with your guests. With a little preparation, you can create a holiday spread that is safe, delicious, and full of Christmas cheer.

How to Create a Gluten-Free Christmas Feast: Recipes, Tips, and Drinks Pairing

Christmas is a time for indulgence, celebration, and plenty of food. But if you’re catering for gluten-free guests, or following a gluten-free diet yourself, it’s important to ensure everyone can enjoy the festivities without worry.

Ignoring coeliac disease is not a good idea!

Luckily, with a little planning and creativity, you can put together a spectacular gluten-free Christmas feast that’s every bit as delicious as the traditional one. Below is a guide on how to create a satisfying Christmas meal, complete with perfect drinks to accompany each course.

Starter: Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Gluten-Free Bread Rolls

Nothing sets the scene for a cosy, comforting meal like a warm bowl of roasted butternut squash soup. This starter is naturally gluten-free and can be made with ease. Here's what you’ll need:

Ingredients:

1 large butternut squash, peeled and diced

2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped

1 onion, finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 litre vegetable stock (ensure it’s gluten-free)

1 tablespoon olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

A pinch of nutmeg for extra warmth

Gluten-free bread rolls

Method:

Preheat your oven to 200°C. Toss the butternut squash and carrots in olive oil, season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg, and roast for about 25-30 minutes until tender.

In a large pot, sauté the onions and garlic in a bit of olive oil until soft. Add the roasted vegetables and vegetable stock, and simmer for 15 minutes.

Use a blender to purée the mixture until smooth. Adjust seasoning as needed.

Serve with warm gluten-free bread rolls, buttered generously.

Drinks Pairing:

For a warm and hearty starter like this, opt for a light white wine, such as a Chenin Blanc. Its fruity notes will balance the sweetness of the butternut squash, while its acidity cuts through the creaminess. Alternatively, a dry cider adds a festive sparkle and complements the earthy sweetness of the soup.

Main Course: Roast Turkey with Gluten-Free Stuffing and Vegetables

Turkey is the centrepiece of many Christmas dinners, and luckily, it’s naturally gluten-free. However, the challenge often lies in the stuffing and gravy. But fear not, with a few clever swaps, you can keep this tradition alive while avoiding gluten.

Ingredients:

1 whole turkey (size based on your gathering)

Olive oil, salt, pepper, and herbs (rosemary, thyme, sage)

Gluten-free stuffing mix or homemade stuffing (using gluten-free breadcrumbs, chestnuts, dried cranberries, and herbs)

Roasted potatoes

Carrots, parsnips, and Brussels sprouts

Gluten-Free Stuffing Method:

Preheat your oven to 180°C. Mix gluten-free breadcrumbs with chopped chestnuts, dried cranberries, and fresh herbs (sage, rosemary, thyme).

In a pan, sauté a chopped onion and a few minced garlic cloves in olive oil until soft. Combine with the breadcrumb mixture and moisten with a bit of gluten-free vegetable stock.

Stuff the turkey with this mixture or bake it separately in a greased dish.

Cooking the Turkey:

Rub the turkey with olive oil, salt, pepper, and herbs. Roast according to the bird’s weight (about 20 minutes per 450g plus an extra 20 minutes) at 180°C.

Make sure to baste the turkey every 30 minutes for a juicy result.

Serve with roast potatoes, caramelised carrots, parsnips, and Brussels sprouts.

Gluten-Free Gravy:

To accompany the turkey, use the drippings to make a gluten-free gravy. Simply thicken with gluten-free flour or cornflour, and season to taste.

Drinks Pairing:

A Pinot Noir is a fantastic choice for pairing with turkey. Its light body and red berry flavours won’t overpower the turkey, while its earthiness complements the roasted vegetables. For something different, try a spiced apple punch (hot or cold), which brings a festive, warming touch to the table.

Dessert: Gluten-Free Christmas Pudding with Brandy Cream

Christmas pudding is the quintessential British festive dessert, but many traditional recipes contain gluten in the form of flour or breadcrumbs. Fortunately, you can make a gluten-free version that’s just as rich and indulgent.

Ingredients:

200g gluten-free flour

150g gluten-free breadcrumbs

100g suet (ensure it’s gluten-free)

200g dark brown sugar

100g raisins

100g currants

100g sultanas

50g chopped dried apricots

1 teaspoon mixed spice

Zest of 1 lemon and 1 orange

1 large egg

150ml dark rum or brandy

50ml milk (dairy-free if needed)

Method:

Combine all the dried fruit in a bowl and soak in rum or brandy overnight.

The next day, mix the flour, breadcrumbs, suet, sugar, and spices. Add the soaked fruit, zest, egg, and milk. Stir until combined.

Grease a pudding basin and pour in the mixture. Cover with parchment paper and tie with string.

Steam for 5-6 hours, topping up the water as needed. Let cool and store until Christmas Day, when you can steam it again for an hour before serving.

Serve with a rich brandy cream or gluten-free custard.

Drinks Pairing:

Christmas pudding pairs beautifully with a glass of Tawny Port or sherry. The rich, fortified wine enhances the deep flavours of the dried fruit, while the creaminess of a brandy cream contrasts the intense sweetness. For a non-alcoholic option, try a spiced mulled tea.

Final Thoughts

Creating a gluten-free Christmas feast doesn’t mean compromising on flavour or tradition. With these recipes and tips, you can serve up a festive meal that everyone will love, with the perfect drinks to match. Whether you’re toasting with a crisp white wine, a warming red, or a non-alcoholic punch, this gluten-free feast will make your Christmas dinner one to remember.

Happy gluten-free Christmas cooking!

FACTFILE:-

Who'd have thought an empire would be created out of a love for the humble flapjack? But that's exactly what Carol Myott and her former business partner Sally Jenkin  built, despite both being semi-retired when they started their baking business.

From their kitchens in rural west Devon way back in 2015 (2025 is going to be a BIG year, trust us on that!) right on the foothills of Dartmoor, they began baking cakes for their local farmers' market. It was the flapjacks that flew off the table,it was all very basic back then, so they focused on this, introducing some eclectic and mouth-watering flavours.

They decided to grow bigger and attended shows like the BBC Good Food Show, and sold out. That's when they knew a collective love of flapjacks wasn't just a whim, people loved these gluten free chunks of oat-filled treats, with flavours like Burnt Caramel and Sea Salt, Honeycomb Rocky Road, and Summer Fruits Crumble to whet the appetite.

Fast forward to 2024, and there are now 12 shops dotted about the Westcountry, mostly in astonishingly stunning seaside towns, with their original shop in Tavistock, which opened back in 2019, the flag bearer for all things Flapjackery. Amazingly, every single flapjack is handmade at their Tavistock bakery! Wow! How cool is that?!

With Sally stepping back, the business is led by Carol and continues to expand nationally. The key ingredients of the flapjacks remain the same, and Carol has some tips on how to make the perfect flapjacks: "Weigh the golden syrup! Lots of recipes measure by tablespoon, but this is very inaccurate and too much syrup can result in a hard finish. People's instinct is to add a bit more to make it soft and gooey, but this has the opposite effect. We recommend the same weight of sugar to golden syrup, which, together, should equal the weight of butter—so if the recipe says 300g of butter, we'd use 150g of sugar and 150g of golden syrup."

That's Christmas and sister site That's Food and Drink (run by a delightfully dotty husband and wife team) have been keenly watching and promoting Flapjackery since we were first introduced to them by our friends at Raw Food and Drink PR.
