How you can make a difference locally by spending £10 locally this Christmas

Did you know you can help make a difference to your local High Street shops? And all it will cost is £10.

Local retailers are having a tough time of it this year, as are we all. However, you can make a difference and all for only £10.

What That's Christmas would like you to do is to take £10 and spend it at a local retailer in the run-up to Christmas.

What type of shop? The local baker, the delicatessen, the off licence, the craft shop, the cake shop, a local pub, the artisanal person who has a stall in the local market who produces awesome handmade goods, a cheesemonger, the shop who sells bottles of beer, cider, etc, the florist, the wool shop, etc, etc.

Just visit them and spend £10 with them.

But don't just do it yourself, please forward this blog post to your family and friends and also send it to your social media groups and see if you can get other people to promise to spend an extra Tenner with your local retailers.

Shoppers urged to support UK’s biggest food drive this Christmas

Shoppers encouraged to help as the Trussell Trust and FareShare expect to provide food to 1.2million people in the UK this winter.

Generous Tesco shoppers are being asked to donate to the UK’s biggest food donation drive this weekend as charities warn of increasing need for food.

The 10th annual Tesco Food Collection, which takes place in every Tesco store from December 1st to 3rd, comes as charities the Trussell Trust and FareShare expect to provide food to 1.2million people in the UK this winter.

During the collection shoppers are being encouraged to donate long-life food items at their local Tesco store. The donations will support food banks in the Trussell Trust’s network to provide emergency parcels to people in crisis and help FareShare supplement fresh food donations to thousands of frontline charities.

The items most badly-needed by local foodbanks and charities will be highlighted in store, and shoppers at large stores will also be able to pick up pre-filled donation bags containing items that food banks and local charities have chosen. During the collection Tesco customers can also round up their bill at the till to make a small donation to the charities or donate Clubcard vouchers online, with Tesco matching their vale.

“Our customers have been incredibly generous during our decade-long partnership with the charities and have helped to donate more than 100 million meals worth of food to date,” said Tesco CEO Ken Murphy.

“This is going to be a difficult winter for food banks and charities and every can, packet or jar our customers donate to this weekend’s Tesco Food Collection will make a difference. We will top up all those donations with 20% in cash to support the charities.”

Lindsay Boswell CBE, Chief Executive at FareShare, said: “Ten years on, the Tesco Food Collection has never been more important. The ongoing cost of living crisis has forced millions of people into food insecurity.

“This event is crucial in helping to collect long-life food and we are immensely grateful to Tesco for their continued support which will help us to continue getting food where it is most needed. If you’re able to donate just one item at your local store, you’ll be helping to provide a meal for someone facing economic hardship this winter.”

“We are extremely grateful to Tesco for the invaluable support that they have provided to food banks across the UK over the last decade,” said Emma Review, CEO of the Trussell Trust.

“Tesco and its customers are the biggest single source of food donations for the Trussell Trust’s network of food banks but our partnership has also offered far more than just food.

“Now, at a time when food banks are facing a tsunami of need created by the soaring cost of living, we would like to share a heartfelt thanks to Tesco for their ongoing commitment to helping the Trussell Trust provide people with access to essential items, while we work to create a future where everyone is free from hunger for good.”

Shoppers go “nut-crackers” for the NEW range of Elf-themed bakery treats available now at Asda

As well as enjoying Asda’s new Christmas advert, featuring Will Ferrell as the iconic Buddy the Elf character, eagle-eyed shoppers have found new reasons to be merry this week as the supermarket has revealed four brand new, elf-themed bakery bargains.

Asda customers have taken to social media to share the finds, especially championing the retailer’s brand new Festive Elf Cake Jar, which is priced at £3.00, thus making it £1.25 cheaper than Marks and Spencer’s similar Cookie Dough Cake Jar.

Within the jar is delicious chocolate sponge layered with vanilla flavour frosting and chocolate sauce, topped with sugar sprinkles and an edible hat decoration.

The range also boasts new Festive Elf Cupcakes, vanilla flavour sponge cakes topped with sweet, vanilla-flavour frosting and finished with an adorable sugar paste elf hat, £2.25 for a pack of four.

Perfect for those hosting Christmas parties is the new Festive Elf Chocolate Party Cake, a chocolate sponge topped with indulgent milk chocolate buttercream frosting, jelly beans and sugar decorations, £6.50 (serves 15).

Lastly, shoppers are loving the Giant Elf Sharing Cookie, a vegan-friendly cookie with dark chocolate chips, decorated with sugar paste and sprinkles to create a shareable treat that looks (almost!) too good to eat. Costing £8, the giant cookie feeds up to 12, if you’re willing to share!

The four new products are all lovingly made in the UK and available in selected stores and online now, whilst stocks last. And, as tomorrow marks the official countdown to Christmas, will you swap the Elf on the Shelf for the Elf on the plate this year...?

Brewdog Distilling Co. Launches Whisky Cask Programme

Scotland's only carbon negative distillery, BrewDog Distilling Co, announces their first ever whisky cask sale. Going live this month, the maverick spirits company steps up their whisky innovation programme, with the golden opportunity to own a cask of their inaugural single malt and single grain whisky, from the newly launched distillery.

That's Christmas is featuring this news because we feel that a cask of whisky would make an excellent Chirstmas gift for the true connoisseur of fine Scotch whisky.

The 50 casks will be part of an exclusive collection, the very first to be filled from the distillery's brand new still house in Ellon, Scotland. The auction will be launched at 19.00 on Wednesday 7th December 2022, in partnership with distinguished whisky auction house, Whisky Hammer. The auction will end on Sunday 11th December, with the casks being filled in early 2023.

The Whisky

BrewDog Distilling Co. capitalised on the combined spirits expertise of their excellent distilling team led by Master Distiller, Steven Kersley. They have historically worked for some of Scotland's leading distilleries and have pent years refining their craft, striving to better the whisky production process at every stage.

Produced from BrewDog Distilling Co's brand-new standalone distillery, opened this year, 2022, that allowed for a 300% increase in whisky production as well as a climate-controlled warehouse capable of holding almost 1,000 whisky casks. The BrewDog Whisky Casks will be the first casks filled at the new distillery.

The distilling team elected to create whiskies that truly reflect BrewDog Distilling Co's core ethos of  'questioning everything, experimenting and innovating' all in the pursuit of incredible flavours.

This dedication includes using multiple intricate blends of yeast strains to create bigger flavours, triple bubble distilling for increased purification and controlling the humidity of their maturation warehouses.

Steven Kersley, MD of BrewDog Distilling Co said: "This whisky has been the natural progression for BrewDog Distilling Co. for some time now, it's something we're incredibly excited about, if not a little daunted. We want to challenge the way Scotch whisky is viewed, consumed and valued. We've put everything into this, dissecting the entire process, focusing on the flavour and creating the best liquid possible!"

Bidders will be in the running to purchase a choice of 3 different 200L casks from:

30 ex-Oloroso sherry cask matured, filled with flavour-focused new make spirit, made from golden promise barley

15 first fill ex-bourbon cask matured, filled with flavour-focused new make spirit, made from golden promise barley

5 exclusive ex-bourbon cask matured, filled with a rye-forward single grain whisky made with an 80% rye malt bill

The Flavour

The single malt, new make spirit is laden with ripe tropical fruits, hints of stone front with a malty back bone and a citrus top note. The rye grain whisky will feature caramel sweetness, dark stone fruits, a little baking spice and a touch of orange rind to finish.

The Auction

With casks starting from £5,000 (excluding commission, VAT and duty) winning bidders will have their casks held in BrewDog Distilling Co's bonded warehouse. This is based on the Balmacassie Estate in Ellon, adjacent to the distillery, where it will lie until the owner feels it is ready to bottle.

The Whisky Founder Club

Each investor will be granted complimentary access to BrewDog Distilling Co's Whisky Founder's Club, launching in May 2023. The club is limited to a total number of 500 individuals who invested into the top tier of the Equity Punks crowd funding raise.

As part of their investment, BrewDog Distilling Co. will bottle and brand their whisky at a minimum of four years old. Each member will have the option to attend the Whisky Founders Club open day, an annual event where cask owners will be able to sample from their cask, meet with the distillers, discuss the future of their whisky and will be invited to sample many of the eclectic whisky's maturing in the BrewDog Distilling Co warehouse.

Why not make your own Christmas hampers this Christmas?

Everyone loves to receive a Christmas hamper filled with all sorts of goodies. And they can be a very good purchase.

But what if this year you find yourself a little bit too strapped for cash to be able to purchase a Christmas hamper? Don't despair! Why not make your very own bespoke Christmas hampers to make a very special, personalised gift for the special person in your life?

Where can you buy hampers or boxes from? Ikea sell them from between £10 to £25. www.ikea.co.uk.

However, my favourite source of hampers and wooden boxes that are eminently suited for a DIY Christmas hamper is The Works.

The Works stocks oval hamper kits at £5.00, Large Wooden Crate Hampers at £6.00, Fill Your Own Mini Christmas Hamper: Assorted at £3.00, Wooden Crate Hamper at £4.00 and my favourite, a real lidded wicker hamper with straps at £10.00. (PICTURED) https://www.theworks.co.uk/c/home-living/home-storage/hamper-baskets

So, what can you fill them with? Morrisons (for example) stock a range of individual portion preserves and honey, so you can put together a range of them and place them in the hamper with suitable crackers and biscuits, in one of the smaller hampers. Or what about a range of toys? You can even make a hamper for your pet, if you want to.

You can also fill the larger hampers and boxes with miniature wine bottles, full sized wine bottles, a range of real ales or a range of typical Christmas foods including mince pies, stollen, panettone, spiced biscuits, tinned foods, desserts, etc, etc.

The only limit is your imagination and your budget.

Money-saving Monday: Have a Best Buy Christmas for less

As grocery prices continue to rise, more shoppers are looking for ways to save money on festive favourites in the lead up to Christmas

Which? has uncovered a selection of cheaper options which scored highly in its festive taste testing,  proving shoppers can save money without compromising on taste.

1. Champagnes and sparkling wines

Shoppers can save significantly on fizz by opting for cheaper sparkling wines instead of expensive champagne. The most expensive bottle of champagne Which? tested cost £39, but in its sparkling wine test, the consumer champion found great-tasting options for as little as £8.99, a potential saving of £30 by switching to sparkling wine over expensive champagnes.

Aldi’s Specially Selected Crémant Du Jura tied in first place in the sparkling wine test, securing a Which? Best Buy endorsement. It was also one of the cheaper bottles tested costing £8.99. The panel commended it for its crisp and refreshing taste, hints of green-apple, guava and grapefruit and its smooth, creamy finish.

Another supermarket bottle that impressed the judges was the Co-op’s Irresistible Prosecco, costing only £9. The judges enjoyed its zesty aroma and notes of ripe peach, pear and jasmine. They also noted it was fresh-tasting and decent value, branding it a ‘crowd-pleasing’ choice. However, crémant is a closer match to champagne if you want a similar-tasting drink for less.

2. Red wine

While some supermarket red wines can cost more than a bottle of fizz, the Which? panel found shoppers don't have to spend a lot to get a good quality red, uncovering a Best Buy bottle for just under £8.

Aldi’s Chateau les Trois Manoirs Medoc 2019 was awarded a Best Buy and scored an impressive 77% costing £7.99 per bottle. The panel commended its smoky oak aromas, which contrasted well with notes of ripe redcurrants and a peppery finish.

3. Christmas pudding

In the Christmas pudding category, Asda’s ‘Extra Special’ Christmas Pudding stood out from the crowd and was awarded a Which? Best Buy and Great Value endorsement. Coming in just behind Which?’s overall winning pud, it received high scores for aroma and texture, with tasters enjoying its sweet smell, moistness, and great taste. It was the joint-cheapest pudding on test costing £8 (£1 per 100g) and was noted as a worthy pick if you’re after a brilliant budget pudding.

4. Brie

Which?’s expert cheese-tasting panel blind-tasted seven premium supermarket Brie de Meaux cheeses for the 2022 festive season. They tested brie from supermarkets like Asda, Aldi, M&S, Sainsbury’s and more, and uncovered a cheaper brie that impressed the judges with its well-balanced flavour: Asda’s Extra Special Brie de Meaux, £3.20 for 180g. This near-champion cheese missed the top spot but came second overall – it was marked as a solid, cheaper pick by the panel.

5. Mince pies

Which? also put mince pies to the test. Waitrose’s Brown Butter Mince Pies with Cognac came top for taste. However, proving paying less doesn't have to mean compromising on quality, Aldi’s mince pies also earned a Best Buy award plus Which?’s Great Value endorsement. Aldi scored an impressive 73% in Which?’s test, just a fraction behind the top-rated premium pies. As the cheapest tested, Aldi’s Specially Selected Mince Pies are almost 50% cheaper than those sold by Waitrose, costing just £1.75 for 6, or 29p per pie.

6. Baileys

Which? matched supermarket versions of Irish cream liqueur against the popular brand Baileys. While Baileys couldn’t be beaten on taste, it came in top at 76%, the panel of 72 consumers were impressed by several supermarket options and crowned a Great Value pick costing less than £8.

Aldi’s Specially Selected Irish Cream Liqueur scored an impressive 74% and at a mere £7.99 per bottle, a whole £8.51 cheaper than a full-price bottle of Baileys.

While its smell might not be quite as enticing as Baileys, tasters thought its appearance, flavour and mouthfeel were on a par with the branded version.

Which? only awards its Best Buy logo to those products that hit the gold standard for quality in its independent tests. The consumer champion recently launched a Great Value award for items which cost significantly less than the typical price in a category but still score well overall.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, said: “No one wants to overpay for festive treats, especially with so many households under huge financial strain in the run-up to this year’s Christmas.

“Our taste testers sampled festive favourites from the largest supermarkets in the UK to find out which ones will make the holiday season extra festive this year and found some great options which won’t break the bank.”

24 ways to waste not this Christmas

This Christmas, the Environment Agency is sharing 24 simple steps that we can all take to make more sustainable choices.

At this time of year around a worrying 30% more waste is generated. This includes over 1 billion Christmas cards which are thrown away every year.

It’s estimated by the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs, that around 50,000 trees are cut down each year to make enough paper to wrap presents. Also, around 12 million tonnes of plastic enter our environment annually, equivalent to a bin lorry load every single minute.

By following the simple steps outlined by the Environment Agency below we can ensure Christmas isn’t wasteful this year.

1. Advent calendar

Invest in a reusable advent calendar and fill it with a variety of gifts. Why not get creative and make your own reusable advent calendar and items to fill it with?

2. Cards

Approximately 1 billion Christmas cards are thrown away annually. It would take the equivalent of 33 million trees to make that amount of cards.

Try and purchase cards printed on FSC-certified, recycled card and are recyclable. Better still, why not go for the personal touch and make your own from recycled card? Remember just like wrapping paper, cards decorated with glitter or foil, can’t be recycled.

3. Christmas wreath

Wreaths are a beautiful Christmas decoration, but some are more eco-friendlier than others. Go for a real, fresh wreath made using seasonal, natural foliage and adornments. Even better, make your own out of natural resources from your garden likes leaves and pinecones.

4. Christmas tree

An artificial Christmas tree needs to be used for about 10 years for its’ environmental impact to be lower than a real tree.

Trees, woods, and forests are vital for tackling the climate emergency. Buying your real Christmas tree from a certified by Grown in Britain supplier will ensure the tree you purchase is from a legal and sustainable UK source.

5. Christmas lights

500 tonnes of Christmas lights are discarded annually in the UK. And if you've not switched to using LED lights on your Christmas tree, make the change now and you’ll be using less energy but make sure you switch them off at night!

6. Decorations

Avoid using single use decorations. Why not get crafty and make some homemade decorations instead?

7. Reusable shopping bag

When you are out shopping don’t forget to take your bags for life!

8. Gifts – make and bake

A homemade gift is unique and very personal and not only shows thought but can also be lower in cost, too. You could make preserves, jams or knit a pair of socks or scarf! Or even make your own hamper, filled with small jars of preserve?

9. Gifts – toys

Have you thought about buying preloved toys or a toy subscription? How about buying wooden toys over plastic?

10. Gifts – experiences

You could gift a membership to a charity or wildlife trust, helping to support vital environmental work like the National Trust or Woodland Trust.

11. Gift – eco

Why not give eco-friendly gifts to family and friends?

It could be something like a reusable coffee cup, reusable makeup remover wipes or a solid shampoo bar helping others make sustainable lifestyle choices.

12. Wrapping presents

Use recyclable wrapping paper wherever possible. Remember if it’s got foil or glitter on it then it can’t be recycled and could contain plastic, too.

Or why not use old newspaper to wrap gifts or even recycle last year’s paper?

13. Bows

Instead of adding plastic ribbons to your gifts that will end up in landfill, why not use a more sustainable alternative like a fabric bow that can be kept and re-used on future gifts?

14. Christmas party wear

Every year, an estimated 336,000 tonnes of used clothing is thrown away by people living in the UK. This year, choose the sustainable option and try to refashion clothing that you already own, or visit second-hand shops, or take old clothing to charity shops?

15. Glitz and glam

Did you know cosmetic and sanitary wipes contribute to 93% of sewer blockages in the UK? Once flushed down the toilet, wipes can get caught in piping and accumulate, congeal with fatbergs. They can litter beaches and even create large, messy mounds along the banks of riverbeds.

If you use make-up wipes this Christmas, remember to never flush them!

16. Christmas Eve box

Invest in a reusable Christmas Eve box that can be used for many years to come, perhaps even becoming a family heirloom! Get creative and make your own reusable box and items to fill it with.

17. Christmas travel

Where possible, try and use public transport when visiting family and friends this year. If this isn't possible, try and car share. This will help reduce emissions, wear and tear on the vehicle but will also save you money.

18. Candles

If you are using candles this year as part of your festive celebrations, please remember to buy candles made of, soy wax, bees wax, coconut wax or rapeseed wax scented with essential oils, cotton, hemp or wooden wicks. All these candles are kinder to the environment as they’re less toxic.

19. Christmas crackers

Unfortunately, most Christmas crackers are often laden with glitter means they’re not recyclable. They are filled with plastic toys and gifts that are soon thrown away.

Why not make your own Christmas crackers without the environmental cost? Using FSC-certified, recyclable paper and recyclable paper ties. Filling the cracker with small presents for each person.

There are Christmas crackers available to purchase that use FSC-certified, recycled paper and the items inside are sustainable too.

20. Festive food shopping

Try and buy as many items as possible from local suppliers, like your meat, fruit, and veg. Buy your vegetables loose where possible, as plastic packaging accounts for nearly 70% of the UK plastic waste.

Plan and be realistic about how much food you need and use up leftovers where possible.

Instead of clingfilm, use reusable containers/covers and wax cloth covers to keep your leftovers fresh.

21. Christmas dinner

When it comes to cooking Christmas dinner and other festive treats, there are some simple yet important ways we can protect the environment.

Pouring leftover cooking fats down the sink can harden in cold pipes. Instead leave to cool, then scrape into the food waste or bin. Don’t feed a festive fatberg this Christmas.

22. Festive drink

We use over 35 million plastic bottles every day, so when you are buying drinks for the festive season, please buy products that can be reused/recycled.

23. Christmas walk

Instead of a Christmas drive or just dropping down in front of the TV why not go out for a Christmas walk?

If you swapped an hour of TV for a walk you could save 170g CO2e.

Being in a green space has been shown to be good for your physical and mental health. Make sure you follow the Countryside Code which tells you how to get out and enjoy green spaces while respecting wildlife and other people.

24. Unwanted gifts

Approximately £4 billion is spent on unwanted gifts. That is over 60 million unwanted gifts every year!

If you receive a gift that is not something you would use, there are various things you could do rather than throwing it away.

You could donate the item to charity, sell the item or organise a charity sale for unwanted gifts. Remember 1 person’s trash is someone else’s treasure.

Make this Christmas a Waitrose Christmas

A spokesperson for Waitrise says: "We've just launched our Christmas range for 2022, and with searches on waitrose.com for the term ‘Christmas’ increasing by 75% compared to last month and searches for Christmas recipes rising by a third since May, it’s clear our customers are already looking ahead to the festive season."

Emma Beale, Head of Product Innovation & Own Brand at Waitrose, added: “Christmas over the last few years has been very different, but with searches already rising on our website, waitrose.com, we know our customers are preparing for big festive celebrations with loved ones this year. Our wonderful team has loved creating a fantastic selection of new products, whilst staying true to our values of great tasting, ethically sourced, delicious food - I’m sure our customers will love them just as much as we do.”

Christmas is a special time to come together and celebrate with loved ones, so whether you’re hosting all your family and friends, or planning an intimate dinner party with your nearest and dearest, Waitrose has a selection of party food to suit all tastes.

No. 1 Whisky Smoked Salmon - succulent Scottish salmon, hung and kiln-smoked over whisky barrel oak chips, birch and heather, and hand finished with Speyside malt whisky.

Vegan 10 Mini No Beef Empanadas- crisp pastry encasing a rich soya mince, red pepper and carrot filling, spiced with a fragrant blend of garlic, parsley, cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, coriander, chilli and turmeric.

Centrepieces & Sides

Although turkey is traditional on Christmas Day,  their delicious centrepieces are also worthy of pride of place this festive season. New for this year are the Heston from Waitrose Festive Peking Duck, Slow Cooked Treacle Cured Festive Gammon and their British Pork Jewelled Stuffing Wreath. All their fresh pork comes from British farmers we know and trust, and we recently committed a £16m support package to our pork farmers as the industry faces its biggest crisis in a generation.

Heston from Waitrose Festive Peking Duck - tender duck, partly deboned and rubbed with festive spices, glazed with an on-trend mulled wine hoisin sauce, with aromatic pulled duck and pork stuffing balls and shimmering duck crackling.

Slow Cooked Treacle Cured Festive Gammon - treacle cured gammon slow cooked on the bone for 10 hours with Christmas spices and served with a black treacle glaze.

Vegan Jewelled Roast with a Fruity Centre - a savoury mushroom-based roast with sweet caramelised onions, chestnuts and a clove-spiced apricot centre, topped with a crunchy, colourful garnish of apricots, cranberries, crushed chestnuts, sunflower seeds and pine nuts.

British Pork Jewelled Stuffing Wreath - studded with cranberries, candied clementine & blood orange, and finished with candied oranges and bay leaves.

British Pork Truffle Chipolatas - outdoor bred British pork chipolatas made with summer truffle, and wrapped in dry cured unsmoked streaky bacon.

Cakes, Bakes & Desserts

An after dinner treat doesn’t always have to be sweet! Their Heston from Waitrose Fig & Pear Mince Pies in Triple Cheese Pastry has been inspired by Heston’s own favourite flavour combinations - Eccles cake and cheese! And a supermarket first - their brand new savoury Parmesan & Cracked Black Pepper Panettone - delicious served toasted with pâté or cheese.

Since it’s Christmas, there’s definitely room for something sweet too! Among the showstopping desserts for this year are their stunning No.1 Blood Orange and White Chocolate Quenelle, Limoncello Pandoro and our Heston from Waitrose Mandarin Negroni Stollen.

Parmesan and Cracked Black Pepper Panettone - a supermarket first, this Italian-inspired cake is made with butter, parmesan and a sprinkle of black pepper. Try it toasted and served with charcuterie, pâté and cheese, or as a special breakfast topped with smoked salmon, a poached egg and hollandaise sauce.

No.1 Blood Orange and White Chocolate Quenelle - rich Belgian white chocolate mousse with a tangy blood orange compote centre, on a cranberry-studded Belgian chocolate base, dusted with sparkles.

Heston from Waitrose Mandarin Negroni Stollen - the buttery brioche dough is speckled with candied orange and mandarin pieces, steeped in Mandarin Negroni and decorated with candied orange slices.

Heston from Waitrose Pear and Fig Mince Pies in Triple Cheese Pastry - inspired by one of Heston’s own favourite creations, Eccles cake and cheese. Like the original recipe, they bring together the flavours of a festive cheese board: the buttery puff pastry is laced with Cheddar, Emmental and Italian hard cheese and the mincemeat inside captures the taste of a Christmas chutney, with plump vine fruits, figs, Bramley apple, a splash of Ruby Port, candied pears, nutmeg and ginger. The perfect partner for our new Kilner jar of Heston's Tipsy Potted Stilton.

Martyn Lee, Waitrose Executive Chef, said: "This year’s Christmas range really has the 'wow’ factor. It's such an exciting Christmas for us in terms of new product development, especially with our stunning No.1 Quenelle dessert and our new savoury Parmesan & Cracked Black Pepper Panettone. Quality and taste are at the forefront of all our product development and our team has worked really hard to make sure that there is something for every one of our customers this festive season, no matter how they might be choosing to celebrate.”

Chocolate is a must at Christmas time and this year we’ve got some delectable newbies joining our already delicious range. For those who like their chocolate with a fruity twist, the Heston from Waitrose Hidden Christmas Pudding Orange (a twist on Heston’s infamous Hidden Orange Christmas Pudding) is the perfect choice. Our Vanilla Snowballs are sure to be loved by all and our Dark Chocolate, Cherry & Amaretto Fudge makes for a delicious treat for the grown ups.

All of their own brand Christmas confectionery packaging is 100% recyclable, and all cocoa in our own brand confectionery is Fairtrade, with our investment supporting farmers, workers and producer organisations across the Fairtrade network.

Heston from Waitrose Chocolate Pennies - shimmering dark chocolate pennies with a gianduja praline centre. They can be eaten as they are, or for an extra indulgent hot chocolate, drop one coin into 80ml of hot milk and mix to velvety smoothness.

Heston from Waitrose Hidden Christmas Pudding Orange - inside a shell of orange flavoured white chocolate, there’s spiced chocolate ganache with currants, candied orange peel and a splash of brandy.

Dark chocolate, Cherry & Amaretto fudge - a rich Belgian dark chocolate fudge with plump, sweet cherries and a splash of Amaretto.

Cheeses

Get ready to prepare a cheeseboard of dreams! Our offering includes the Heston from Waitrose Potted Stilton (which pairs perfectly with the Heston from Waitrose Fig & Pear Mince Pies in Triple Cheese Pastry) and our No.1 Stratford Blue Truckle with Pear & Kentish Cider Glaze.

No.1 Stratford Blue Truckle with Pear & Kentish Cider Glaze - rich, creamy blue cheese with a sweet glaze to drizzle over, topped with candied walnuts. The truckle is exclusively available at Waitrose and makes the perfect cheese centrepiece for Christmas celebrations or a foodie gift for a loved one.

Heston from Waitrose Tipsy Potted Stilton - creamy Stilton layered with caramelised red onion chutney, and a generous dash of rich, sweet Pedro Ximénez sherry.

Vegan Melting Chilli Bake - savoury and smooth, topped with vibrant chilli jam.

Roots to the Future starts Roots Grotto to help make this a happy Christmas for everyone

Roots to the Future has put out a mass appeal for unused items, that can be wrapped and given to families who are currently struggling with household bills and inflation across the board.

A spokesperson said: "We are also asking for items that are going to be of direct benefit to those unfortunate enough to be sleeping rough at this time of year.

"We are deeply saddened to see that more families than ever are finding this winter tough with the rising cost of living. Parents are having to cut costs on basic essentials such as food and heating just to make ends meet.

"The reality is many children will go without a single present this year as many parents just cannot make the pennies stretch far enough.

"For this reason, we're organising a Christmas Present Appeal, whereby we will be taking donations, wrapping them up, and helping local families in need. We'd love to take away some of the stress for families this Christmas, putting a smile on children’s faces with a simple spoonful of kindness!"

They went on to say: "We'd be so very grateful to have your support in this appeal and would love to accept any donations of toys, gifts, toiletry sets, games, scooters, bicycles, electrical items, etc so that we can wrap up and pass them on to local families in need at this time of year. We are seeking presents for boys and girls, men and women, of all ages.

"For those who wish to donate, or receive, please visit the website rootstothefuture.co.uk and go to the tab named Roots Grotto where you'll find more information on how to get involved. There will even be a chance for you to help with wrapping in our Christmas Workshop!

"We will do our very best to make this a Happy Christmas for many more families this year."

How to sidestep the Royal Mail strikes

How can you sidestep of even beat the Royal Mail strikes in the run up to Christmas? There are several things you can do.

Visit your nearest town and see what gift buying opportunities are there on your local High Street. Craft shops, giftware shops, local jewellers, haberdashers, clothing shops, toy shops, charity shops (which often sell new items or Amazon returns) market stalls at the local market, specialist Christmas markets, craft shops, wool shops, local bookshops, delicatessens, off licences, etc, etc.

And speaking of Amazon, if you don't have a suitable nearby town why not open up an Amazon Prime account? If you open an Amazon Prime account many of the gift items that you will want to buy are offered on next day delivery and because Amazon Prime orders are usually delivered by couriers and not by Royal Mail you can be more certain of ensuring that the gifts you need will arrive even before you need them for the big day, Christmas Day on December 25th!

And why not consider E-cards this Christmas? One such UK-based E-card company which has lovely Christmas cards is Jacquie Lawson. You can check her cards out here https://www.jacquielawson.com.

Royal Mail strikes hit Christmas delivery dates. Please check here

As home delivery expert ParcelHero predicted, many retailers are pulling back their Christmas final order dates as Brits decide against expensive express deliveries and stores battle with the impact of planned Royal Mail strikes.

ParcelHero says many stores have now pulled back their order dates for Christmas deliveries. Wise shoppers are abandoning expensive express services while strikes threaten to further disrupt deliveries. This has led to some dramatic changes in retailers’ final order dates to ensure gifts don’t miss the big day.

ParcelHero’s Head of Consumer Research, David Jinks M.I.L.T., says: "Many of our favourite stores have woken up and smelt the eggnog and are rapidly dragging back their final order dates for Christmas. Already, stores like Boohoo, Currys, HP, Paul Smith and PC World have pulled back their last order dates by several days.

"There are two main reasons why retailers are revising their final order dates. Firstly, planned strikes affecting traditional postal deliveries just before Christmas could throw final order dates into disarray. Secondly, last-minute express and next-day deliveries can cost at least a fiver extra compared to standard delivery options. Cash-strapped Brits, facing higher bills and raging inflation, simply don’t have the money to burn on expensive delivery options.

"Many retailers will also be trying to save money by slashing Christmas delivery times. They pay their delivery partners extra for faster service. That’s normally a worthwhile expense at Christmas, as these faster options can give them an advantage over their competitors. But this year’s Austerity Christmas will see shoppers spend an estimated £4bn less than in 2021. Stores will feel the impact of this reduced spending and cannot afford to waste money. As struggling retailers Joules and Wilco will confirm, times are hard.

"Here’s our list of Responsible Retailers who have pulled back their Christmas final order dates:

Boohoo: was 23 December, now 21 December

Cath Kidston: was 22 December, now 21 December

Currys: was 23 December, now 18 December

HP: was 21 December, now 15 December

Paul Smith: was 23 December, now 19 December

PC World: was 23 December, now 21 December

Selfridges: was 24 December for London postcodes, now 23 December

The White Company: was 23 December, now 22 December

"Given the current strain on delivery services, we won’t be surprised if even more retailers pull back their final order dates as Christmas nears. That’s why our continually updated Christmas deadlines tool is so useful for keeping shoppers in the know with their favourite retailers’ final order dates."

How to avoid career suicide at the office Christmas Party

The office Christmas party is an annual tradition that many people look forward to. However, waking up the next day to realise you could have put your livelihood in jeopardy isn't a great start to the festive season.

From drinking too much or making inappropriate comments to a work colleague, it’s all too easy to turn a fun night out into career suicide.

Sue Andrews, HR expert at KIS Finance has been looking at the best ways to enjoy your office Christmas party without putting your job at risk.

Sue says: “Office parties fall between a casual and professional place that can be hard to navigate. Everyone wants to enjoy a party, so if you follow a few simple guidelines, you can do this without running into problems and regrets.”

The number one rule – don’t get drunk

Pace yourself! The office Christmas party is still a professional environment, so drinking too much and losing your inhibitions is never a good idea. Saying or doing something you might later regret can have a lasting negative impact on your professional reputation, and you don’t want to come to your boss’s attention for the wrong reasons.

Having one too many could cause you to share too much personal information you later come to regret, or even repeating something confidential that could really land you in professional trouble.

Disagreements that simmered during the year can bubble over when those involved have had a few too many drinks and you may find you react out of character when your inhibitions are lowered. It’s not unknown for arguments to erupt or even become physical, which could land you in very hot water with not only your employer but possible the police too.

Telling an inappropriate joke is also a good way to be remembered for all the wrong reasons. When you’ve had too much to drink you may forget your audience and end up embarrassing yourself, particularly if you tell it to your boss.

If you supervise other staff you may also want to keep a clear head as it’s a bit difficult to retain your team’s respect if they have seen you staggering around at the party the night before!

Don’t flirt with colleagues

Even if your feelings are reciprocated, this isn’t the time to share them as it’s likely to lead to embarrassment for you both. If the other person doesn’t feel the same way, they could find the situation quite stressful and this could lead to serious consequences. You could even find yourself facing a claim of harassment and a trip to the HR department the next day.

Follow the dress code

It is really important to take account of the location of the party and the type of culture at your company. If it is a formal sit-down meal, turning up in a clubbing outfit will look really inappropriate. If there is no dress code issued, then speak to colleagues and get an idea of the type of outfits that others are wearing. Whilst it is important to be yourself, you also don’t want to look out of place or be remembered for the wrong reasons.

Don’t talk shop

Don’t be the work bore that everyone wants to avoid. Get to know colleagues better on a human level by talking to them about their interests or holiday plans, but definitely avoid office gossip. It’s never a good idea to be found gossiping about colleagues, as it’s sure to backfire on you plus you never know who is listening.

Mix with others outside of your immediate work team

Treat the party as a good opportunity to widen your network and strengthen working relationships with colleagues by getting to know them better as individuals. You may find that you make some useful connections with people that you might otherwise not have had the opportunity to meet and get to know a little better.

Be careful about uploading images to social media

Some companies ban the use of social media at work events in order to protect staff from embarrassing incidents. Whilst it may seem fun to film your drunken colleague on the dancefloor, you could find yourself in trouble if it causes embarrassment for the individual or bad publicity for the company. You could even face allegations of bullying by a colleague, who wasn’t pleased to wake up the next day to see their antics on social media.

Spending all evening on your phone will be seen as bad manners anyway, so put your phone away for the evening and enjoy being present.

Don’t leave early

Unless you have a genuine reason, such as the babysitter only being available until 9.30, it’s polite to stay for the majority of the evening. Just putting in a short guest appearance will be noticed, and you risk looking ungrateful or that you think you have better things to do. Either way it won’t look good to your boss.

Not showing up

If you have said you’ll attend then its bad manners to bail on the night. Not going will make you appear like you’re not a team player and don’t appreciate that the company has put the effort and money into arranging an event. Even if you don’t think they’ll notice, Managers will usually notice who didn’t attend.

Say "thank you" at the end of the night

Just a simple thank you at the end of the night or the next day to the organiser, will be greatly appreciated. It takes time and effort, not to say money to put on a Christmas party so it’s worth a quick acknowledgement to your boss to show that you recognise this and, if you are part of a large team, it’s a good opportunity for you to remind them who you are.

If you stick to these easy tips you can enjoy the party without any fear that you will wake up the next day without a job!
