The unique concept of The Clock and Barometer Store in Ongar, Essex sees both showrooms and workshops on site. Visitors have the opportunity to browse a superb display of new and antique fine clocks and weather instruments made by Comitti of London and other top European makers. The workshops give an insight into the company’s 150-year heritage in the art and craft of making fine clocks and barometers in the UK.Comitti of London have been makers of the finest quality clocks and barometers since 1850. Many of the early styles are recognised as English classics and have now become sought after antiques in their own right.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, instrument makers in England lead the world in terms of craftsmanship and technical innovation. Today Comitti’s aspiration is to create products that are appreciated for their outstanding functionality and superb craftsmanship, products that will become treasured family heirlooms that will always hold their intrinsic value.
The company’s founder, Onorato Comitti, was a skilled Italian instrument maker who came to England in 1845 seeking a new feature in a land of prosperity post the Industrial Revolution. Comitti established his workshops in London as a maker of barometers and related instruments and, in a very short time, his beautiful products were gracing the homes of discerning customers. It was during the late Victorian period that the company diversified into clock making.
The workshops and showroom in Essex mark the recent relocation of the business from London, and a step back in time to the way they used to sell – direct to the consumer. Today Comitti is still a family business, run by the grandsons of George Barker, who married Louisa Comitti and joined the business in the 1890s. The Managing Director, Simon Barker, believes that the longevity of the business and its continued success is a tribute to the policy of carefully blending age-old craft skills with the most up to date technology, and the family nature of the company.
Comitti clocks are also available through a selection of authorised dealers (details available on the website).
Time is probably the most important abstract element in our lives and the measurement of time as an art and a science is deeply rooted in our culture. For these reasons, the passing of time has a unique significance and a product from Comitti is a perfect addition to any home.
